Water Consumption... How much do you drink?

Hi, I am new to MFP and am thrilled with all of the support & feedback from the community boards. :-)

I read online that I should drink half of my body weight in ounces of water to function properly. And another article says to drink 8 glasses of water.

What are you guys currently doing?

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

(Feel free to add me)

I think you should do whatever works for you, there's no magic math equation that works for everyone. My doc told me once to use my urine color to determine if I'm drinking enough.

But usually I aim for AT LEAST 8 glasses, but my goal is usually 10-12.

Drinking lots of water helps me have more energy and helps me to snack less, so I try to drink as much as I can!

Lately I have been trying to become more mindful of my water intake. I use to believe in the, "8 cups of water per day", or the, "drink half your weight in ounces". I would drink so much water that my pee had no color LMAO! Now I drink only when I am thirsty. A lot of the food I eat has a high water content, and if I train I drink more naturally since my thirst goes up. So I guess... I drink as little as 4 to as much as 12 cups per day depending.

Depends on my sodium intake for the day, as well as my exercise, but average 80-150 ounces a day.

I drink at least a gallon a day. I do the "half my body weight" thing, and I gave up soda. My skin really loves the water im intaking, and my skin feels way less chapped, even my lips are more moist.

8-12 cups a day.... That does not include the iced tea and hot tea I drink. I dont usually count that because of caffeine.
I make sure that my pee is as close to clear as possible.

I'm currently on liter #6 (~202 fl oz), and on track for #7 (~236 fl oz). I just use a color chart like http://www.appforhealth.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Urine-chart-300x297.jpg to determine if I'm hydrated. If you consume that much water, though, make sure to replace your electrolytes, or you'll be at risk for dilutional hyponatremia (water intoxication).

I shoot for 10-12 glasses a day. I generally follow the half your body weight in ounces rule, but it's not super strict. I carry around a camelbak water bottle and drink from that all day. If I drink the whole thing, that's 3 glasses right there, so it's pretty easy to stick to.

I drink an insane amount of water... It's not uncommon for me to drink a whole liter bottle with one meal. It really depends on how I'm feeling for the day. For some reason, when I'm not feeling well, I tend to want to drink less, even though I need it more. I aim for 9 glasses/day, but I usually drink more without even thinking about it. I don't really track it, but it's all I drink except for tea, espresso, and almond milk.

I started to drink a lot (almost 3 litres a day) since I started using the app "plant nanny" - it is really cute and motivates me to drink more. You have a plant in a pot and if you don't drink enough during the day your plant dies. Everytime you drink a glass of water you also have to water your plant. Maybe this could help some of you who drink too little

I drink to my thirst. Drinking water just for the sake of drinking water only to pee it right back out again along with electrolytes my body does can't possibly be healthful. And I know the advice to force feed water regardless of thirst isn't backed by any research.
  • Wow, I can see that it really varies, I have a significant amount of weight to lose so I think I will follow the 1/2 your body weight in ounces & make sure to intake some more electrolytes just in case.
    Thanks everyone!!!

I drink 6-10 8 oz glasses of water each day, usually depends on how often I have time/remember to refill my water bottle at work.
