Are you a healthcare provider? If so, what do ya do and what do you have worse? Beeping Bipap's or Blood Sugar checks...

For me, it's Bipap's....

And I am an ICU RN:drinker:

    Beeping call lights...
    Beeping IV pumps...
    Beeping pagers...
    Beeping vital monitor...
    So. Many. Beeps.

    I don't have to deal with too many beeps anymore though (at least for right now)...I'm a RN in private practice.

    Paramedic here. No beeping bipaps, pumps or call lights, but I do get beeping LifePak Alarms...and BEEPING Pagers, (and I'm sure you nurses can relate, today all my calls have been on patients who are not even half as sick as I am!) :sick:

    CALL LIGHTS!!!! The worst. I call the patients who use them heavily LL's. (light lovers)

    Intake Specialist for the Psychiatric part of a busy ER (no beeps...unless you count our pager...no lights...unless you count the overhead fluorescents).

    Worst = intoxicated/belligerent/fighting/punching/spitting/aggressive patient
    Worst = physical takedown situation
    Worst = patient becoming very physically ill needing transfer to the medical side of the ER...FAST

    Best = sleeping patient
    Best = appreciative patient
    Best = placement in under 3 hours
    Best = "Thank you!"

    RN here too (UK). I work in community but was an ICU/HDU nurse in another life, also worked in nurse education for a while too :bigsmile:

    Definitely beeping BiPAPs....but also ventilators. 1/2 to 3/4 of my patients are on some sort of ventilatory support. I'm a RRT (Respiratory Therapist). My main job is vent weaning of hard-to-wean chronically ill patients, also care of artificial airways (trachs).

    Usually the BiPAPS are beeping because the patient has either ripped it off their own face or it has slipped and requires adjusting...both pains in the you-know-what!

    I prefer the tubed with a side of propofol, lil 'kiss kiss' works magic and they are either sleeping beauties or the can can kickers sliding down in bed, lol

    Psych was my first job as a nurse, when I was in school for my BSN I sat for the LVN boards and passed. I worked 16 hour shifts back to back on Saturdays and Sundays to have freedom to study. It was an eye opener. The day I quit was when a 250 pound plus patient in four point leather restraint got loose and attacked my aide, I was trying to Cape hold him and he threw me across the unit. Boom, quit, I love the ICU...for now...

    For some reason, the dispatch Gods send me every psych, drunk, suicide, OD and/or lonely Frequent Flier. I can so relate. I teach EMT's and always say that my favorite patient (in the back of the ambulance) is an unconscious patient. (I love the Sleeping Beauty reference, tho my patients are not often beauties.) :tongue: It's a good thing we all love what we do!

    I'm a psychiatric RN.

    What I hate most? Lazy techs, Nurses who don't know the definition of "team" or "teamwork". PAPERWORK!! THE TONS OF PAPERWORK! I hate NIGHT TERRORS about doing never ending PAPERWORK!

    I'm a surgical RN and work day/midnight shifts. My nightmare is the call bell that goes off- as SOON as you walk out of the room. But the patient fighting you while in the four points is always a good time! Since moving off my old unit (Neuro & Trauma) I have alot less call bells going off in my mind after work is done! And also alot less drunks... GSW gang members bugging the crap out of the staff for whatever comes to mind. But the small thank you's and the people who truly appreciate what you do are what make everything worthwhile!! ????????

    Was a Labor and Delivery RN prior to a MS diagnosis. Did work Med-Surg forEVER .

    Worst: Emergency C-section at 4:30 AM
    Worst: Bad delivery resulting in crashing Mom and/or baby
    Worst: Delivery from the local prison system resulting in hostile laboring mom shackled to the birthing bed. Prison guard in room either apathetic or in the way. *sigh*

    Best: Apgars of 10/10
    Best: Getting to cuddle babies :)
    Best: Happy mom/baby experience :)

    EMT here. Volunteer college squad that insulates outside EMS from the [sometimes trivial] complaints of the student body. Beeping pagers and a beeping thermometer in the crew chief jump bag. Some days I could cheerfully chuck that thermometer out the window.

    Calls to someone four flights up with no elevator are some of the worst. We have a great stair chair, thank goodness, so we aren't carrying everyone down on our backs, but it's a long way down.

    "Gray-area" drunks get to me a lot too. Do you need to go to the hospital? Not especially. Do I wish someone could watch you to make sure nothing happens to you? Yup. Is that going to happen. Nope. Sign here. Call me back if you start dying. Then I go back to the office and agonize for a while.
