Weight loss beginner. Help please!

I am 24 and have always struggled with my weight. I am 5 5" and weigh 170 so I am overweight. A week ago I finally decided to take control of my life and lose this weight. I didn't exercise much before so I started exercising this week. I pushed myself and burned around 700 calories each day for 6 days. I worked out 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening . I ate around 1400 calories of healthy food a day (no junk food, white bread, or soda). I took a rest day on sunday. I checked my weight today and found the scale hasn't changed at all. I am so disappointed because my sister also dieted and worked out less that me and lost 4 pounds this week. I feel like I will never lose this weight but I don't want to give up. What am I doing wrong? Do you have any recommendations for me. Thanks.

That sounds like too much exercise to start off with. I would recommend changing your diet and then start with exercise. Did you eat your exercise calories back when you burned 700? If not, you were basically starving your body. What workouts are you doing? I found that Jillian Michaels DVD's (esp. 30 day shred) are good weight loss videos. Walking will also help. Remember to weigh your self at the same time, on the same scale. I've heard not to weigh yourself on Monday or a weekend, but Wednesday or Thursday, at the same time during the day). I would recommed when you wake up, but each person is different.

I would say open your diary, and you can't really compare yourself to your sister, we are all different and lose at different rates, you need to focus on your journey and do the best that you can for yourself. It's only been a week, patience is so important, weight doesn't come off overnight if you want to make lasting changes, you need to shoot for 1-2lbs per week depending on how much you need to lose.0

Weight loss is a marathon not a sprint. It requires a sustained effort over a period of time.
Put another way... you didn't wake up one morning and suddenly you were overweight. This evolved over time. The same time is required to shed the weight.
You may also want to evaluate the quality of food you consume and quite often exercise is overstated (at least when I look at machines at the gym... they numbers seem awfully high compared to what I really burn).
I can give you some recommendations if you'd like?
1. Water is the only fluid that goes in my mouth. Everything else works to sabotage my intake.
2. Eat 5 servings of raw fruits and vegetables a day (most people don't eat enough fruits or veggies)
3. Exercise enough to burn off your smallest meal of the day... every day.
4. Add strength training with cardio. Balance is important to your every day routine...
5. Watch for hidden calories... just because it says diet, doesn't mean its healthy and doesn't mean you can smother it in gravy, ketchup etc. Anything you eat contains calories... condiments and dressings included.
6. Pay attention to portions and weigh everything. An ounce is an ounce only once you have confirmed it on the scale. Eyeballing a portion usually leads to more than you think.

It's only been a week. If you just started working out or have recently increased your routine then your muscles may be holding onto some extra fluid to help cushion and repair them, which can mask any weight loss that's happening. You need to give any plan a few weeks before you determine whether or not it's working.0

Oh honey, don't worry!!!! Let me first say you will lose the weight and be just fine. Here's my opinion and educated guess on what the hold up is. I'll share my recent blunder. 35 days ago , I made that same decision. I worked out 4 days a week, 2 hours a day. The other three days, I am a RN in a busy ICU and just didn't make exercise time in those 12 hour days. I counted calories (it varied from 1300-1700 depending on how much I exercised). I got on the scale after a week, after two weeks and had only lost 1.5 lbs. I was SICK!!! I decided to trudge through and disect my food intake. I found I was eating too many carbs (like 250 lol) and so I learned to eat better ones and try to keep it under 150 or so. I experimented with vegetables. I stayed away from fluid hoarding foods and beverages ( like beer and bagels). If I really wanted it, I would have it. But after consciously thinking about it, I decided I would be just as satisfied with a healthier alternative and felt all the better for it. I then noticed I wasn't eating enough veg. So I added that in. The next week, I was down three pounds. My 35 day total is about 8.8 lbs (now, I haven't weighed in a week). There are theories that your body will hoard whatever it can in a "survival mode" of sorts when it's shocked into all this change. It is trying to preserve itself so it hangs on tight. When it realizes you're not trying to kill it, just make it healthier it lets go and begins to trust lol I am on the fence with this theory, but my body seemed to do that in a way. Second, I had to really look hard at my intake and learn what my body responded too and what it didn't. Lowering my carbs was an experiment. Adding veg was an experiment. I had no clue if anything would change, but it did. Lastly, and in my opinion MOST IMPORTANTLY, you have to trust the process and continue to give it your BEST. Don't just try, don't tell yourself "I'm not going to work this hard to get no results." That mentality will not get you where you want to be. It's just like work. Do it because you know you have to, you know it will pay off. It HAS to! You will not workout 2 hours a day, 6 days a week and see no results for the rest of your life. It just can't happen. So trust your efforts, fine tune things in your diet (if needed), your workout (if needed), but most importantly be patient. You will absolutely get there!!!!0

Don't go from no exercise to 2x a day workouts. Work on your diet first for a few weeks, take walks, ease into more strenuous exercise. You're setting yourself up for failure doing too much too fast0
