What to expect a a yoga class?

Title says it all really. Joined my local gym three weeks ago and am trying out as many classes as I can to find what I like. Next on the list is yoga tomorrow morning. Am going by myself and feeling a bit nervous as I don't know what to expect!

Wear something comfortable that you can stretch in easily.

Someone is bound to fart during the class, that is perfectly normal :-)

It is possible you will sweat like a maniac while just trying to stand still.

Do not try to do more than your body allows you. A good instructor should mention modifications you can do as a beginner if you can't do the original. You probably won't be able to do the poses exactly like the instructor or other people. Do not try to compete with them, just try to do the most you can, and it will improve as you go to more classes.

I love yoga, it challenges my body in a way neither cardio nor strength training do. It takes a lot of concentration and I love seeing the improvements in my moves in only a few weeks. Focus on yourself, don't worry about what others are doing. Remember to breathe.

I have never been aware of anyone breaking wind in yoga.

LoL, someone will fart. Relax and breath while you are practicing yoga. Listen to your body, it will tell you when your pushing it a bit to much. I a that a good instructor will coach folks that are new to yoga, modified ways of performing poses. Have fun.

Enjoy and take in the experience. Your gym yoga will probably be a more light hatha/restorative yoga. I love doing classes at my gym ---have not ever done a yoga class--but have a yoga studio. I love doing power vinyasa flow (hot) and I do bikrim as well. I guess I like the heat. I prefer vinyasa I like the movements through poses and I love to sweat. Bikrim has the same 26 poses in the same sequence every time you practice so you can really see and focus on your progress. Let us know how your gym class goes. When I first started I was so nervous going I to this studio where basically these girls with their perfect yoga bodies wearing just a sports bra and boy shirts going into a perfect handstand. I realized even when I was looking at them when I let go I realized no one was looking at me if I couldn't hold a pose. And once I let that go I became so much stronger and I pushed myself. No one was looking at me they were focused on their yoga. I would recommend if you are like me someone who loves to sweat and more fast paced to try to find a vinyasa yoga. Especially if you like it.

Keep an open mind, dont expect to be able to do everything the first time. Listen to the instructor and know ur limits. There are many types of yoga, so if this class isnt ur thing, dont give up on yoga before trying others! Most importantly, have fun

I was pretty terrified for my first class also, and each time its a new instructor I am still a little uneasy. I would recommend getting there a little early to map out your spot and lay down your mat. This also usually grants you a little time to chit chat with others including the instructor. If the instructor recognizes that your a new face they will likely ask about any previous exposure, and being that your new will more then likely be sure to give modifications that will better suit you. Expect that they will go for the most "advanced" form of the pose first (to get the regular people into the pose first so they can stay in it longer) and then will show the modifications. Don't sweat it too much, most people are so focused on their bodies and breathing that they really care what you are up to. Good Luck!!! Also, if you have the chance to, try other instructors....there are some that I love and others that I will skip class to avoid.

Thanks everyone for your reassurance! I really enjoyed the class and found I was more flexible then I expected, booked in to go again next week as I am a bit of a perfectionist and I wasn't as good as I feel I could have been. Thanks again!
