I have been using a HRM for a couple weeks now and LOVE it, however...sometimes it doesn't pick up on my heart beat.. I try moving it around, adjusting, pressing it against my chest...and it still won't read but then randomly it will start at some point...very annoying, does that mean I need a new chest strap or something maybe?

I've had the same problem... I've exchanged my HRM twice because of it. The one I have now hasn't given me any trouble yet. I'm making a point now to rinse off the strap and pat it dry with a towel after each workout.

could be dry skin, try some lotion on the areas where the electrodes make contact and see if it helps, i have that problem especially in winter!
  • Some say to wet down the the pad that detects your heart rate, or use a gel. Also there can be interference from things... lots of things such as TV's, cell phones, car motors, and also the treadmill and so on....

I know with the FT4 it says in the instructions to wet the strap before putting in on. I haven't had any problems so far.
  • With women they say to try moving the strap slightly to the left as your heart rate is easier to read that way. Also, make sure you are washing your strap and transmitter with soap and water at least once a week. When putting the strap on, ensure you wet the transmission strips. If water is working you can also try lotion.
  • I occasionally have the same problem...here are the biggest offenders:
    1. my skin is dry and it's not reading...wet the sensor or use gel like babump
    2. i've lost weight and forgotten to tighten the strap so when I'm really moving it loses contact
    3. sometimes the underwire from my bra gets underneath the sensor and lifts it away from making contact.
  • Thanks everyone! I will try those tips! Sometimes it seems like it almost has to 'warm up' lol, that could be a result of the dry skin issue. Thanks again!:flowerforyou:
  • What make/model do you have? I have a Polar FT7 (that I love) and I have to wet my strap before putting it on.
