Some men seem to think 1 inch = 2 inches when reporting length. :)

    LOL

A foot is not a foot because a foot of iron is totally different from a foot of plastic.

    We need a like button......

I usually have a great deal of respect for Runners World (even though Rodale can be an extremely annoying company and promote a lot of weight loss nonsense through their other publications) but once again two completely unrelated arguments are being made.....a calorie is unit of energy and is always a calorie, CICO is about energy balance and weight loss and is simple physics.

What you eat and how it affects your health is a completely different matter, you can over eat with fruits and vegetable and gain fat. Will you be healthier than the person doing the same thing snarfing down boxes of Twinkies - probably, but you'll still be overweight.

The author may be an RD but she obviously failed Logic 101.

    Tell me about it.

I've learned that a footlong is rarely actually a footlong these days.

I warned the people at Subway about that...

    1 Calorie = 4.18400 joules

    (1 calorie) + (1 calorie) = 8.36800 joules.

(1 Kale Calorie) + (1 Mashed Cauliflower Calorie) = You're going to heaven.

(1 Bacon Calorie) + (1 Nutella Calorie) = Burn in hell for eternity.

An inch does not equal an inch? A calorie is a measure. As far as weight loss, a calorie IS a calorie. If you talk about health, it is a different story

You're right. It is a unit of measure. The confusion comes in when you follow the digestion of the different Macro components. Different Macro components get digested differently. Some use more of the available food calories for the digestion process than others. IMO, that fact gets a bit overblown by some.

No, that's not where the confusion sets in. That sets in when people use short hand when discussing differences in food.

If people would use common sense phraseology:
"a calorie's worth of <X food or macro> is not the same as a calorie's worth of <Y food or macro>", then the meaning is clear and there's no argument.

Or, they could shorthand it and just use: "<X food or macro> is not the same as <Y food or macro>", again meaning is clear and there's no argument.

When people start with "a calorie is not a calorie" and then segue from talking only about energy to what was digested to obtain that energy, then the discussion makes no logical sense.

The semantics wouldn't be all that big of a deal, IF it were obvious that the posters understand the difference. But how many posts have there been that conflate CICO and macros/micros to the point that it's clear that the poster doesn't get it at all.

I think that combination results in the destruction of the universe as we know it... still, for some, it may be worth it! ;)
