I want to invest in a heart rate monitor that will tell me how many calories I have burnt during my exercises,(kickboxing and zumba).
Please send all opinions.
I bought a cheapo from Walmart, needless to say I took it back.

I would love one with an arm band.

I love my Polar FT7.........Worth the money
  • I bought the wristwatch kind from Costco. The name brand is Pulse. It monitors your heart rate, steps taken, and calories burned. I also think it does distance also if you are walking outside or on a treadmill. It seems to be fairly accurate. A general rule of thumb is this: Light exercise burns about 3 -5 calories per minute Medium exercise burns 6-8 CPM and Heavy exercise burns about 9-11 CPM...so aerobic dance type activities burns roughly 450 to 550 calories per hour. I hope this helps.

I love my Polar FT4. I had an F6 before that and it was great too. Good thing about the FT models (either 4 or 7) is that you can change the batteries out yourself when they wear down. They're a little more work because of needing to wet down the chest strat before and after working out but it's totally worth taking a couple extra minutes as it gives you a more accurte reading.
I ended up giving the F6 to a friend of mine - it still works but the battery is dying and will need to be replaced soon. I just didn't want to deal with shipping it back to Polar for maintenance.

I LOVE my Polar FT40. And you can swim with it. Most Polars are waterproof, I believe. If you are looking for accuracy, you need one with a chest strap and one that takes into account more than just height, weight, and gender for calculations (some do resting heart rate tests, etc).

I bought a Cresta T (or P)383. Its working really well and was only 30 bucks. It was on sale though it was originally 50. I'm not sure if it's for sale in the US though..
