Skinny fat Shorty

Hi, I am 5'1 (36 y/o F) and currently weigh about 102 lbs. This may sound tiny but I can grab about 5 lbs of fat in my midsection and thighs. I have a very small. petite frame and have weighed 97 lbs before which I think looks very good for my size, but despite the low weight, I could see the stubborn fat rolls in my midsection when I slouch. I exercise a good bit: cardio for 10-30 minutes daily (2 of those days doing HIIT), and 1 hour of weigh lifting 3x week. I know I need to do body recomp but I'm not sure if I'm on the right track. I find that 1200 calories is too much and I don't lose fat though I don't think 1050 (calculated intake based on goal weight) is enough food. I keep hearing other shorties (who weigh more than me) say they eat 1500-1700 and I swear I would blow up if I ate that much. My current diet keeps me very satisfied: breakfast smoothie (1/2 banana, 1 cup almond milk, 2 tbs protein, 1/2 cup berries, 2 tbs nuts), greek yogurt, a handful of nuts, protein + greens (5 oz chicken and 1 cup kale or 5 oz salmon and 1 cup spinach), 1 cup plantains or other carb. My fitness pal keeps telling me I'm not eating enough calories. I'm not sure if my regiment is the best one to get the results I want. My wedding is coming up in 6 months and I'd like to look like a Victoria's Secret model! A SHORT VS MODEL. How can I change my body composition and burn off that last bit of fat? Thank you!

Strength training is what you want to do to get the results you are looking for, but how you are going about it may or may not be optimal.

What's your routine? Are you lifting progressively heavier weights for a small number of reps or lighter weights for more reps? Are you following a specific program? Are you using free weights or weight machines?

Cut the cardio down and do a good progressive weight training programme 3x a week like stronglifts 5x5

And I think you should absolutely up your calories

I think you're on a road you don't want to be heading down.

Eat more and look up body recomp. To build muscle you'll need to eat more.
  • I started lifting little 10 lb barbell because I was a weakling and have since gotten up to 25 lb weights. So currently at 55 lbs total and doing 5 sets of 5-10 reps. I do squat press in 2 positions and russian deadlifts with the barbell. I also use the machines to do weighted leg press and adductor abductor, quads and hammies. I've progressed from 30lbs to 70 lbs on most of those. Then I jump on a cube 50 times (5 sets 10) and I use a 20 lb kettle bell to do deadlifts (5 sets 10 reps) and then I swing the kettlebell (5s/10r) On odd days I use that machine with the pulley things to do arms (tri, bi and shoulder) and obliques. I usually stick to 5 set 10 rep but sometimes I just do 5 sets to burn out each time.

Agreed. With both the first and second points.
  • Let's not be so literal, people. Obviously, I can't grow taller. It's pretty clear I meant body shape.
  • This makes no sense...you seem to be doing everything right - nutrition, lifting, cardio, etc. Maybe you're being too hard on yourself. :) I'm sure you look great...but I guess if you're not seeing the results you want, try doing more core work outs as opposed to just lifting (if belly is still your problem, this would probably help) and change up your cardio - do swimming instead maybe? ...but then again, what do I know? I'm still trying to get myself to consistently work out / eat better. :P
