What's the deal on sugar free ice cream?

It says no sugar added but has 22g of carbs per half cup? Where are those carbs coming from?

Milk has sugar. Just not "added sugar" Regular dairy doesn't have added sugar but it has "dairy sugar" (lactose).
(and then there's probably a few sneaky things in the ice cream too.)

    basic gist:
There's a difference between "sugar free" and "no sugar added".
And sugar does not necessarily = carbs.

Oh no it was no sugar added, not sugar free. Still though, how much sugar is in milk? It said 22g carbs 5g sugar 1g fiber on the website, what are the rest?

Drinking a cup of milk is one of the recommended ways for a diabetic to correct a low blood sugar. There's quite a bit of sugar in it.

Geez that's good to know, I never knew it was that much sugar.

Lactose is sugar, but in kind of an odd way. I don't think it gets counted in the sugar column.

Depending on additives, some of it could be starch from thickeners and stabilisers.

Without knowing what "it" is I would be looking for erythritol and the like in the ingredients list.

Carbsmart by Breyers is what I live by! They have ice cream and ice cream bars. The carbs are low and yes it is sweetened with splenda but when the craving for ice cream hits it does the trick.

I had to try banishing all the sweets for a while or it just feeds my bad habits. I've added some back in and I'm back to yo-yoing. So sugarless gum and barely sweetened tea are back on the menu (though I think some of my fruit teas have been triggering headaches...darned rose hips and hibiscus. :(...)

EDITED TO ADD: I'm a carb-addict in recovery and have binge tendencies. Normal people might not have to break the habits I did....

I had an eye opening moment yesterday regarding "sugar free" gum. I was chewing it throughout the day to help with not eating all the time (I need something in my mouth!) . I have never logged it, because its gum - you dont swallow it, its sugar free, and only 5 cal anyway. Well... I have been chewing a LOT so I decided to just log it yesterday and put in 20 pieces... um.... 100 calories and 20 CARBS! Ugh. So the past few weeks I have been going up to 20 carbs higher than I thought :(

    Sigh. Log everything...

That's part of why I choose a gum I can barely tolerate. If I get the ones I love, I'll binge on that too. If they are sugar alcohols, and I have less than 4 pieces a day, I don't count them at all, as long as they are spread out. I tend to chew two pieces at a time because one piece in my mouth is so tiny it's just weird. My current go to on gum is Trident's original. Flavor doesn't suck, only 1 g of sugar alcohol carb per piece, and I never seem to want more.

For reference, I got Trident Strawberry Lime Splash something in the back like 50 pieces. Ate them all back to back, wanted to die from gastro distress... Same with the lemon pie one from ice breakers. Or Sour Patch ones... I've always loves sweet and tangy stuff - seriously ridiculous - my mouth is literally watering typing this. That's so wrong.

I tried the Halo Top, which seems to have the lowest calories & net carbs. Taste was decent, but texture was so-so. Hard to find in stores. Then tried the Breyers' no sugar added - a few more calories than the Halo Top, but WAY better flavor & creamy texture. Fits my calorie budget, and does not spike my blood glucose. Of course if you count total carbs instead of net - this could be a problem. Also, it promotes bad habits. But sometimes - you simply need some ice cream, and this stuff hits the spot.

Ditto @sweet and ditto @yarwell. Lactose is a disaccharide sugar, derived from galactose and glucose. To oversimply, "A disaccharide or biose is the charbohydrate which is formed when two monosaccharides (simple sugars) are combined". When looking at labels, I also avoid things that have the Latin suffix, "ose". (lactose, glucose, dextrose, fructose.) And "itol": also mannitol, sorbitol and xylitol -aka, sugar alcohol sweeteners. Sometimes, they do not show up in the sugar or carbs tally, but it's still in the product. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/-ose

A big batch of sugar alcohols give me the preggo belly and trots. Really appealing, NOT! Besides when they add all those things in, it tastes wayyy to sweet. I do like sorbet & gelato however, but can only eat 1/2 c anyhow as they are quite intensely flavoured. Besides I like the weirdly flavoured gelato like lemon & basil, or strawberry & black pepper.
