Heart Rate Monitors

Hi everyone! I just wanted to pick some brains as to how accurate you think heart rate monitors are (only the chest straps). I have a Polar Bluetooth Chest Strap w/ Heart rate monitor and I use it very often however sometimes I feel like I haven't burned as many cals as it displays after my workout? Example: Im 5'2", about 122lbs and it says I burn about 301 cals in 3.1 miles. Am I really burning 100cal/mile??? Its hard to believe. Just curious about your thoughts on the accuracy in these type of products!

The general rule is 100 calories per mile.
I think that is pretty accurate, HRM's are more accurate compared to MFP or machines.. but they are not a 100% accurate device. They are an approximate calorie burn.0 -
Running or walking? How much do you weigh? 100 calories per mile is not a one sized fits all answer ... not even close.

Running!! HR btw 180-190
, weigh about 122, thought I'd burn a little less since 122 is not very large0 -

Did you do the fitness V02 test? I think you have to pay for it with the polar beat app. It's supposed to make it more accurate.

I have the Garmin 110, it's fairly accurate0

For long steady state cardio the H7 is about as accurate as you're going to get. Bear in mind the algorithms Polar uses are based on generalized population, but for run/bike/swim it is very accurate.0

Yes I have the H7. I use it under "jogging", should I be using the " running" training option instead?

Yes I have done it. It is built into the device I have so I can do it for free whenever I want. It helped set my max HR and what not0 -

I don't know if the algorithm changes from jogging to running - I'll have to check this out now that you mention it. I'm using jogging at the moment at ~7mi/hr pace.

I'm currently using the Galaxy S5. The droid version syncs perfectly and I have had no issues other than it conflicting signal with my Fitbit, so I just take off the Fitbit when I run/bike/swim.0 -
