I am participating in Dietbet right now and it really is helping me stay motivated.
I find that I am much more diligent with logging and weighing daily. The lbs are starting to fall off and it feels good to know that I have reasonable goal with a deadline. And if I don't win I lose my money.
Anyone else doing it?

I am still not losing like I want too. Therefore I am dropping down to 1,000-1,200 calories a day. I hope this helps.0

I found for me that within the first week my weight was jumping around. And some mysterious days I would even weigh more than my start weight.
I too have tried to cut down to 1200, and it is starting to work now. I am about halfway to my goal.
Which week is it for you?

I did it! It was fun and you win a couple dollars doing it. Whatever makes you wanna stay on track. I put $30 in and won $16 on top of it. There were like 66,000 people in my bet too. Yeah, 66,000.0

Give my money away to strangers who claim they lost more than I did?

I think I looked at this the other week.
Unless I missed something seems like it would lead to unhealthy weightloss.
Why not put that 30 in a jar and if you achieve you goal you get it back, if not you seal the jar and throw it into the ocean.0 -

That's what I love about it. It is the first time in ages I actually logged daily. The charts and everything else keeps me accountable. Easy enough goals to keep me on track. I love it. I really was dragging my feet after so many years. So glad I did it and will do it again next month.0 -

Anything to win a bet, eh? Even if it means unhealthy weight loss caloric goals. Sighs.

To all the naysayers (discouragers) in this thread.
If this type of program wouldn't work for you, then don't do it. It's pretty simple.
Don't discourage other people simply because you have deemed something inappropriate for you. You may notice my original post said nothing about "do you agree with dietbet?"
You are welcome to your opinions but something like "hey! Good job, I am pleased this working for you, but this isn't for me" is a more polite response.
As far as health. Hmm..that is subjective? I find losing 4% over one month or 10% over six months perfectly acceptable and motivational for some and most definitely for me.. If it doesn't inspire you. Simply don't participate.
1200 calories is perfectly acceptable for short time periods.
I am excited to be doing this, have discovered it, etc...I find for me that deadlines, goals and rather insignificant winnings (money isn't really the point considering how little you win) is the most motivation I have had in years.
And I personally won't be losing my money to strangers because the goal is so easy, I am already winning my bet.
But hey, some may not have the same experience, which is fine too.

I did it on my regular 1350-1500 calories a day. It made me tighter with my logging and really eliminated my excuses from working out.
They have structure in place to hep prevent crash dieting. In the 6 month DietBet, you have to have lost a minimum amount of weight to participate in the final round (they didn't want people trying to "catch up"). 2/3 of my group (about 1000 people) were out for the final round.
I paid for it and not losing money when I don't have to was a good motivating factor for me. It got me down into my goal range. Was totally worth it.0 -

This is a valid question. And there is the possibility for some cheating. For example, someone could hold a brick in the first weigh in...
However, I think most people go in there realizing that:
A. The win is not all that huge
B. To cheat is to cheat themselves more than the game. Because again, the winnings are small.

I used Healthywage to bet. You have to submit video or other documentation to verify before and after. Still haven't received my winnings though. It helped me be more responsible as didn't want my monthly $ to be gone.0

Not sure who this post was aimed at.
But say someone comes here and posts they are eating 800 cals a day or eating nothing but frozen mint peas.
Am I just meant to encourage them? You go girl! You eat those mint peas and completely ignore the fat protein and other nutrition you need.
Or should I raise concerns about your choice and methods of weight loss.
The 2nd post mentioned eating as low as 1000 cal and being in this thread it make it sound like they are under eating to win a bet.
That seems to be the thing people are mentioning. That betting on weight lose might lead you to unhealthy weight loss methods.
Seems like a reasonable concern to raise.

Eh, seems cool. I like that you can at least get your money (less the dietbet fee) back based on your personal 4%; it's not a who loses the "most" type deal.0
