I started walking and riding this summer to improve my fitness and lose weight, since Apr 5 I have logged 1026 miles and lost 20 pounds. I am somewhat intimidated by the speeds I see posted here but I must consider I ride primarily surface streets in the city and I'm quickly approaching 64 years old. ☺ I try to average 12-12.5 mph with my best being a 13 mile ride at 13.2mph. My longest ride to date has been 46 miles. I look forward to the rain stopping so I can get back to riding. Enjoy ur weekend rides, Stay safe

This is great. Speaking of age, my friend's dad is 74 and can ride circles around most people! My comfy speed is 12-12.5mph. I ride with a group and it's considered a "developmental" ride, but they average around 15mph and it's a challenge for me since we ride 25 miles. I guess it's character building!

To czymom123 - I am riding purely because a) it is fun and b) to loose weight. Therefore, I judge my riding by time, not mileage or speed, both of which can be dictated by the type of bike you have and the topography of where you ride. For weight loss, I shoot for between 60 minute and 90 minutes four times a week. And then put the results in myfitness.com to see the estimated calories used. Though I just did over 2 1/4 hours today, which really burns the calories. The thing is, as you get more in shape (and faster), you have to find new routes that take up the desired time. Since my goal is weight loss, not racing, distance and time are by far secondary factors. Getting on the bike consistently and enjoying it is what is most important. Happy riding.

First ride in July ... 27.5 km on the cycleway on my Marinoni Ciclo. :) COLD!!

    Saturday 11 - 27.5 km cycling outside (80 min)
    Sunday 12 - 26.2 km cycling outside (75 min)

    Subtotal:
July Cycling: 53.7 km in 155 min

Tuesday 14 - 40 min on the bicycle on the trainer indoors ... yay! But watching the review of the TDF helped.

    Subtotals:
July Cycling: 53.7 km in 155 min + 40 min cycling indoors

Wednesday 15 - 40 min on the bicycle on the trainer indoors
Thursday 16 - 40 min on the bicycle on the trainer indoors

Watching the extended highlights of the TDF.

    Subtotals:
July Cycling: 53.7 km in 155 min + 120 min cycling indoors

Saturday 18 -- 42.22 km with 773 metres of climbing, including one climb rated as a Category 4.

Cold!! By the time we got up into the hills, it was only about 7 or 8 degrees. Thank goodness I brought an extra fleece vest for the descent.

But it was good ride. I felt pretty good almost all the way up, but then started to run out of energy. We stopped at a little bakery, but my chocolate macaroon finger just didn't do it for me. It didn't give me the energy I hoped for. So the descending was all right, but the climbing right at the end was a bit of a struggle. I'm also experiencing a mystery back pain for some unknown reason.

Nevertheless, apparently we were faster this time than last, and we took a break this time!

The scenery on this route is beautiful ... forests, hills, and Mt Wellington topped with snow.

My husband and I have a lot of bicycles!! :)

    Touring bicycles
    Folding bicycles
    Sport touring bicycles
Climbing bicycles (they're lighter than the rest)
    Racing bicycles
    Mountain bicycles
    A Tandem

And several others which are projects ... not sure how they'll end up being used yet. :)

That's pretty cool. My husband has a bike, but does not choose to ride at the moment. I have been riding on a schwinn, but recently went to a bike shop and got a road bike.

    Ride Time: 33:21:47

7/14, first FTP test with a real power meter. My 30min TT average power (=FTP) is 249w, 13w short of my VP estimate. Not bad for VP. But, ugh, 51w more to go before hitting age and weight mean. Hope to see 280 by end of the season but most likely mid season the next.

Ok so the speeds and lengths of rides here are very intimitading.....I am a former runner and blew out my knee. I had knee surgery about 2 months ago and both my dr and pt have suggested riding. So here I am. I choose to be inspired by you guys and will check back often for more inspiration and to push myself. I was told to focus more on the length of time I ride rather then miles to start. So with that being said:
July 18 - rode for 45 min -- felt good but was very sore for 2 days!!!

I am really enjoying being back on my road bike after not riding for awhile, taking me a bit to get back up to speed but I have noticed improvement in just a few short weeks. Keep it up everyone and as a friend of mine likes to say rubber side down!

    7/2 10.46 miles
    7/4 22.18 miles
    7/6 21.56 miles
    7/7 12.52 miles
    7/9 14.02 miles
    7/10 13.77 miles
    7/13 14.09 miles to today 122.34 miles
    7/14 13.67 miles
    7/15 13.98 miles
    7/17 13.71 miles
    7/18 21.67 miles
    7/19 33.32 miles
    7/20 13.97 miles to today 232.66 miles

It's fun to see the miles add up
