@melifornia -- are you going to Vegas for fun or for work? Either way, enjoy your trip!

@lori-- glad you are enjoying the new bike and have time to ride with that hotel job behind you. I also saw the TDF crash (of course, I'm a nerdy fan who watches the entire race, so I saw ALL of them), but I know exactly which one you are talking about. Stage 3 something like 35 riders went down--several seriously injured. Yes, it was a scary crash--all because someone accidentally touched wheels in the peloton. I don't blame you for not wanting to ride in groups.

@kaye-- sending good thoughts your way.

@kelley-- Yes, my mom knew I was only running short races; she just thought they were all called marathons. LOL One more day until vacation--enjoy your trip!!

AFM-- The spare room is coming along. I did some more cleaning and purging of garbage. I had no less than 4 mugs stuffed with writing utensils on the work desk. Many did not even work anymore--I think a threw away about 50 pens. When DH gets home from work, he will help me throw out the old mattress from our daybed (we are buying a new one), then I can move the desk out of the room and paint. Still need to head to Home Depot to pick up paint.

    Wednesday Wish:
My wish is that everyone who's struggling (with illness, stress, motivation, anything) finds some strength to recover.

    Tuesday Goals:
    1. Clean off work desk DONE
    2. Take 4 bags of books and binders to school DONE
    3. Drop off donation to GW
    4. Move work desk into other spare room
    5. Clean window treatments
    6. Paint ????

    August Goals:

    Run another 8k (Thanksgiving 2014 8k = 56:49, NYE 2014 8k = 57:47, 1/25 = 55:41; 2/28=55:15, 3/29 = 59:15; 5/9 = 59:16; 6/22 = 59:10)

    Exercise Goals:
    Sun--rest day
    Mon--walk gunner DONE
Tues--walk gunner DONE + PT DONE
Wed--walk gunner DONE + gym or run outside DONE
    Thurs--walk gunner
Fri--walk gunner + gym or run outside
    Sat--walk gunner

    Hi Y'all!
First, to @Kaye - my sympathies on the passing of your father. That is a great loss to a daughter.... and I also am praying for your DH. I hope a good resolution comes about.

I've missed all of you. I had a great trip to Estes Park and can clearly state this has been the best year of my life. Never before have I vacationed so much! First Sedona, and then Estes! Its overwhelming to me. Next is Sept 6-7, when I go to western Nebraska to visit an old friend on her ranch then the end of September when Lori (@Cblue) comes to visit me in Omaha - altho she thinks I live in Tulsa -so maybe not?)
We'll have to get that straight.....then next March to Chicago. This is really living. But after the Chicago trip I will have to hunker down and start paying off my credit cards as they are in terrible shape. But, that is also partially due to my renovation of my bathroom....

I am also praying for so many of you who are also suffering health or financial problems.

To the rest of you - you are doing excellent work on your lifestyle changes. Way to go on decreasing your food intake, increasing your water intake and upping your activity levels. I am VERY IMPRESSED!

Yes, indeed I will be going to Omaha to visit Ellen, not Tulsa. I slipped a cog while typing.

Robin- Glad you had a great vacation.

Karen- The story was funny about the marathon running. On the running shorts I did use glide and was wondering if that made them ride up. I like the idea of being a specialist for a 5K and that is a great goal. My goal is to be able to run a half marathon. That way I can participate in a Ironman Relay team, it would be very cool to hear my name announced as an Ironman.

Lori-glad you are enjoying your new bike and a proper fit is important.

Kaye- Hope the DH gets some good news.

I lost the post I had written when I tried to post so I just shortened the information.

Thursday - Truth (got anything you need to fess up to or get off your chest?)
Well, I have to fess up that even though I know what it does to me, I still once in a while eat food that I know will set off a higher calorie day than I allow myself. ... yep, refined carbs and sugary starches. Last evening there was a social event at the Senior Center and I ate one cookie ... and then on the way home from there I ended up stopping at Tim Horton's and got myself a muffin and one of those frosty drinks they have that sounds and looks healthy but isn't. At least I have to pat myself on the back for recording them in my food diary. Thank God all that carb put me to sleep so I didn't go raiding the cupboards for anything I could find that might feed the addiction I have to those types of carbs.

Gonna do better ... I promise myself.

@RobinsEgg - I LOVE Estes Park! So glad you were able to go and enjoy it.

@skinnyjeanzbound - Wellll...Vegas was supposed to be for fun, but it might end up being mostly work? I'm going because a friend of mine is appearing at the big Star Trek convention, and we haven't seen each other IRL since 2007. He lives in England and works all over the world, and this is only the second time he's been to this convention in the last 10+ years, so the fact that I can actually fit it into my schedule (plus I had airline miles to use) seemed like serendipity. A couple other friends (who I've seen more recently) are also there and offered me the spare bed in their room, which I gladly accepted, thinking we'd be hanging out over the weekend, too. But no, they got tickets to a Josh Groban show in L.A. on Saturday and are going to that instead of lounging by the pool/keeping me company. I don't expect my friend who's actually appearing at the con will have time for more than dinner or drinks, so that leaves me on my own for a pretty big chunk of the weekend. Anyway...long, rambling story short, I'm taking work with me and viewing this as a work retreat with a splash of socializing.

Thursday Truth: I am constantly disappointed in my food choices. I rarely like what I've chosen to eat, and it's rarely healthy. But I still have some weird mental block about making my own food. Is anyone else struggling with this? I want to eat healthy. I make up meal plans. I buy the ingredients. But when the time comes, it's like my brain cannot comprehend HOW to make the food and/or that it will taste good. I'm afraid of cooking for myself?

    Weekly Goals: August 3-9*

*I'm going to Vegas this weekend, so making some accommodations.

    Diet
    • Eat at least one serving of a non-starchy vegetable every day - 1/7
    • Drink 96oz of H2O daily - 3/7
    • Prepare at least one meal from scratch

(Can you tell I'm still really struggling with food choices?)

    Fitness
    • Daily yoga - 4/7
    • At least 3 cardio sessions - 1/3

    Personal/Home
    • Miracle Morning - 4/7
    • Take meds daily - 3/7
    • Pack for Vegas -
    • Wrap Elizabeth's birthday presents -
    • Finish decluttering/rearranging bedroom -
    • Take old desk to nieces (need to borrow Dad's truck)
    • Follow up on eShakti order - DONE

    Work
    • Finalize/approve first issue of magazine - last piece of content sent to layout
    • Write P&G draft and send out for review -
    • Follow up on USHCC story - DONE
    • Get organized for next issue of magazine -
    • Edit and submit guest blog post -
    • Invoice newspaper - DONE
    • Invoice mag publisher - DONE
    • Invoice website client #1 -
    • Check in with website client #2 about updates -

    August Goals
    • Miracle Morning daily - 6/31
    • Cardio 3x weekly - 1/12
    • Finish client website -
    • Sub 2 days - x/2
    • Invoice $2500 - $905/$2500

Thursday- The great news is I ran for a little longer than 1 hour tonight, so about 4.33 miles at a moderate pace. It felt good to run tonight.

We are prepping the house for my dad to come home. That means we are getting a wheel chair ramp installed at the house. I am not to sure what is going to happen with this situation. I want my dad to come home provided he is ready, but I am not sure he is. Mom is still in denial that things will be back to the way they were before he got sick this time. Personally, I am scared that something will happen and it will wear us both out. I want mom to get help during the day at least in the morning and at night when he will be hard to get up and put to bed. She is not going for it and most likely won't until she realizes that she can't do it all on her own. This whole situation sucks.

The bright side is I am going to have a party on Saturday before the house gets turned upside down with the wheel chair ramp going in.

I will keep exercising and using it as my stress relief an a way to avoid being home for extended periods of time. At this point, this is the best way for me to cope with the situation. School will be starting soon so that will take up large chunks of time and exercise in the evenings will limit my time at home. Not the way I want to be but it will be the best way for me to cope until I figure out how he is going to do.

@BrittPohler - welcome. You've got a great plan in mind with your idea to break up your weight loss goal into 20 pound segments. You'll be able to see your weight loss progress on a graph page the MFP develops for you over the weeks and months as you lose it. Its quite interesting to watch those graphs!.

@Laurie - Its sure has been a while since your dad's been home. I agree your mom's expectations will probably not be met. You dedication to your own health, physical and mental, is smart and sensible. You're facing facts and being realistic, and you, unfortunately, are the one who will have to facilitate helping your mother accept the inevitable moves they must made with home care etc.
Best to show now you are always going to set aside time for your exercise NEEDS and not drop them to become a Home Health Aide in addition to what you already do for both of your parents.

@Toots - I read a bit about that diet. It does not sound easy - but I'm glad its helping you. BTW are you still considering WL surgery?

@Colleen - wonderful you've been walking so much and have a goal to do a 5K! Do you know what kind of sneakers you want to buy?

AFM - I'm exploring mushrooms tastes. I've decided I love oyster mushrooms and do not much care for the taste of button or portabellas. I bought some oyster mushrooms tonight and plan on finding a recipe tomorrow or winging it and fixing a thin sauce and after cooking them down in butter (maybe that will be the sauce ) and serving them over fettucini for my supper. My friday nite date with myself and binge on Netfix.

Hopefully these pictures will come thru - this is where we stayed in Estes Park, the city of Estes Park, Co. which is the entrance to Estes Park, the big Park that is next to Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park. Its confusing. The city of Estes Park is quite small, but very beautiful, surrounded by mountains with the Big Thompson river running thru it. We were so lucky with the cabin - an A-frame that we got. It was right on the river - our patio of the kitchen door only had room for one table seating 4, then a skinny tree, about 10 rock then a 5 foot slant down to the river - and that was it! We were right on the river - these pix were taken from that patio!

The city has a beautiful restaurant and shopping area that is open air and one side is a walkway along a tributary of the river. In just 3 nites, we ate at 3 differnt but well-reviewed restaurants and went home stuffed. I didn't buy anything on this trip but enjoyed the river walk and window shopping.

@colleen-- new running shoes are an awesome reward!! I have a hard time going into a shoe store without buying a new pair. I love Mapmyrun! I use it whenever I run outside to let me know my distance and pace. I also like that it records my splits. If you are already alternating running with walking, you might want to try Couch to 5k. I used it to start running a few years ago. I didn't have a smart phone at the time so I just used the schedule on their website, but they also have an app that will tell you when to run and when to walk.

@laurie-- great job running for over an hour. I still struggle past the 45 minute mark--mostly, I think I just get bored. I hope things go well with your dad transitioning home. One of my friends just bought a new house today and is concerned about how her dad will be able to visit since there are stairs at every entrance and he is basically wheelchair bound. He can go short distances with his walker, but stairs are really a challenge for him. I'm sure the ramp will make things a lot easier for your dad, but I really hope your mom agrees to some help sooner rather than later.

@melifornia -- sometimes those trips with some "me" time are the best. When I went to Nashville with friends in May, I had a good chunk of one day to myself and really enjoyed it.

@niki-- Good for you for logging it. I also went over today, but tried to log everything. I learned long ago that not logging doesn't erase the calories--it just makes me feel worse for not being honest with myself.

@robin-- it's great that you're getting to do all of this traveling, and I'm very excited that you're still interested in coming to Chicago in March. Speaking of which...

@those interested in the Chicago Shamrock Shuffle Trip March 2016-- Registration has not opened for the race, but I will alert you as soon as it does. I know it's early, but I already started researching hotels. Most downtown hotels here are at least $250/night (pre-taxes). Those would be your Marriotts, Hiltons, Hyatts, etc. I happen to be a member of Choice Hotels and I could get a rate of $127/night (pre-tax) at a Comfort Suites right on Michigan Ave very close to Grant Park (where the race starts/ends). However, that is the pre-paid, non-refundable rate. The flexible rate is $149/night which is still a great rate for that area. I'm tempted to reserve a room or two at the higher rate. Then when we know exactly who is coming and for how many night, I can check to see if there are any rooms available at the lower rate.

So my question is how many of you are seriously considering coming and for how many nights? The race is Sunday 3/20/2016. This is NOT a firm commitment from any of you; it would just give me a better idea of how many rooms to book and for how many nights. Also, I am assuming folks are fine with up to 4 to a room (depending on our final head count), but if any of you prefers to room alone or in pairs or would rather just book your own lodging, just let me know. You can respond here or send me a private message.

    Thursday Truth:
I'm in the same boat as a couple of others who are struggling with food choices. Of course, I know exactly what I should be eating, but I don't always do what I'm supposed to do. Alas, my rebellious nature has prevented me from losing any of the 10 lbs I committed to at the start of summer. In fact, I'm ashamed to say my scale has been up rather than down. Nothing too alarming, but firmly at the top of my normal 182-187 range (though I had a day or two flirting with the 190 mark).

    Tuesday Goals:
    1. Clean off work desk DONE
    2. Take 4 bags of books and binders to school DONE

@RobinsEgg - Love the pics, how great to stay right on the river. I will have to add Estes Park to my bucket list.
@skinnyjeanzbound - Count me in for the race. I will come down on Satuday. Let me know if you need $$ for the deposit.
@Lauriek70 - I am thinking of you and praying for all to go as well as possible. I can see where your mom is coming from. She will come to reality soon enough, I hope it does not throw her too hard.
@melifornia - Cooking for one is different but not impossible. There are loads of videos on Youtube. That is how I learned to make my stir fry. I do this several times a week. My boys are not there at supper time and hubby is still eating junk. So I cook for one most of the time.

    Stir fry for one:
    1 T olive oil
2 oz sliced mushrooms, any kind (love those oyster muchrooms Ellen mentioned)
2 oz sliced carrots (microwave in small amt of water for one minute first)
1 or two cups sliced zucchini
    1/2 c sliced onion
4 - 5 oz chicken breast sliced or diced into one inch cubes.
You can change up the vegetables to suit your own taste

    Sauce:
    1 tsp corn starch
    1 tsp brown sugar
2 T broth, orange juice or water
1T seasoned rice vinegar or water
1 tsp garlic minced or sprinkle of garlic salt

heat your pan and add the olive oil
then add vegetables about 1 cup at a time and stir and cook until every thing looks done. Depending on the level of heat and your pan this will take 5 to 10 minutes.

In small bowl stir together sauce ingredients give another stir right before you add to the pan.
Pour in sauce and stir until it thickens. Serve immediately.

If you are making for two then change the sauce amounts to 1T corn starch and 1 T brown sugar and double the rest.

AFM: Dealing with a few of difficult clients, who knew window treatments were so vital to ones life? LOL. The weather here in WI has been great the last few days. mid 70's, low humidity. I did get on the bike for a ride last night. I am taking Sunday off. No plans yet but may take a nap.

Friday fitness: I did deadlift 190 this week! I am truly amazed at what my body can do compared to just a few months ago.

@RobinsEgg ...I didn't see your profile picture with your thread post and so I checked your profile and see you put in a new pix ... and wanted to say that vacations must agree with you 100% because you look wonderful!. Nice pix here of Estes Park. Like Cblue, I need to put that on my bucket list as well.

@skinnyjeanzbound ...That Chicago Shamrock Suffle get-together for running or supporting sounds like a great idea. I love Chicago, and am thinking seriously about joining you all to support (I barely can walk, so not as a participant) ... as a way of meeting some of you in person and visiting a city I haven't visited since my son's family moved to Missouri from there. I'll have to do some planning and let you know later if you can count me in.

Also .. just wanted to say that while I love sharing with everyone on the community page, there have been some friend requests coming in from people that don't know this about me yet ... so I want to set the record straight ... I do not accept friends or send friend requests on MyFittnessPal. Just a quirk with me.

Food Lesson relearned this morning ... I cannot eat cereal out of the box ... any one of them spikes my blood sugar well above the target zone. Hmm, now what to do with the rest of the Cheerios and Corn Flakes that are in my pantry?

Have a great weekend everyone ... will touch back on Monday Check-in

I've been away for a good while but I was just cruising this thread and I remember now why I like it so much.

Friday fitness - I have been walking a mile with the greyhound every day. I have been swimming 3 days a week. I have also been trying to convince the wife to go 'swimming' a couple times a week - it's an activity, it should count.

Big Aug- A huge Welcome Back, it is great to see you on here again, you have been missed. Swimming is a great exercise and low impact on the joints. I love a good swim a couple of times a week.

Karen- I am in for the Shamrock Shuffle- I will come in on a Friday night and might plan to return on Monday. Do you know if Brian will join us, I would like to meet him as well? I am looking forward to seeing Chicago since I have not been there. I am good with any of the places you mentioned.

Niki- Do you have any grandkids around? My niece who is about 20 month loves to eat the cereal out of the box.

Robin- Estes Park looks fantastic and the pictures are fantastic.

Karen- I still can't believe that I ran for 1 hour. For me it is about completing the miles and trying to do it at a consistent pace while controlling side stitches. I still deal with boredom issues and controlling speed so I ended up finishing on the treadmill instead of on the track. Treadmill benefit I was watching TV while running at a slow pace about 4.3 mph. I did learn that I can walk that fast for short period of time then start running again.

Colleen- I started out the same way with running. Walked most of it and would do short burst of running. When you start running make it more like a fast walk instead of running full speed. It will make it easier to run longer distances. As a matter of fact, you can walk really fast until you can't keep that pace and then move into a slow job. Viola you are running.

Fitness- I had a wonderful climb tonight and tackled a couple of new walls. One wall require multiple leaps of faith and balance. It was very difficult but I made it up. I am still swimming, running and biking for my fitness. Like Karen the scale has not been moving down like I wanted. The 10 lbs I wanted to lose this summer are still hanging around but yet people tell me I look thinner. The measurements have not changed either so I am frustrated. I will stay the course and see what happens.

    Have a great weekend.
