Hi everyone. So in a nut shell, I'm so depressed and confused! I'm a female, 5'3". On December 30, 2015 I weighed 137.8, and logged it. January 12 I weighed 134.2 and logged it. I was happy with that progress. On January 25, I weighed 133.4 but didn't log it... Just THREE days later, today, I weigh 136.8. WHAT???? I have been logging my calories and using my elliptical every day. I need help, and don't know what to do. Please please help me. :( I haven't missed a day of watching what I eat or using my elliptical since Dec 29. I was becoming proud of myself. Now I'm just more depressed than ever. Thanks...

Weight loss isn't linear. Did you have a dinner heavy in sodium? Did you increase your exercise recently? Is your period coming or are you ovulating? Those will all cause water weight fluctuations like what you're seeing.

I suppose I may have had more sodium than normal yesterday, but not a crazy amount... I haven't increased my exercise, but need to. I hope to start increasing tomorrow. Don't think I'm ovulating or a period is coming....? Not 100% on that. My twins are 17 months, and it hasnt returned yet. With how hard I've been working, I can't believe the numbers aren't seriously lower...:(

If it helps any, my weight fluctuations +- 5lbs throughout the day. One high reading is meaningless. I know a lot of people give the advice to weigh yourself less and look at the overall trend. I find the opposite works well too, stepping on a scale 5+ times a day you start to understand just how insignificant *one* data point is.

I'm going through exactly the same thing- and I totally get how you're feeling. Could have to do with the time of day you weighed yourself. I've always found it best to weigh myself first thing in the morning before I eat or drink anything - and as hard as it might be - really try to weigh yourself once a week. So much can happen (like the other poster mentioned) that can throw off your day to day #. Week of week progress is a better measure (and probably how you have designed your weight loss goals as well). Best of luck and congrats on staying focused through the holidays!

That happened to me last week, but when I looked at my diary I was over my calories here and there and had high sodium before my weigh in. It made me work harder this week, so I did new workouts and reallly watched calories, ate lots of veggies, and lost almost three! It happens, you have to accept it, and just go harder this week. Don't let that one weigh in break everything you've been doing, which is what I used to do.

    Great advice!

Also in my experience women retain water during ovulation. Time of day and which scale you use does matter. Best practice is to weight on same scale at same time of day wearing similar clothing. Good luck don't give up!

Start using a weight trend tracking application. Your NON FAT weight fluctuates much more rapidly than changes in your fat deposits. A weight trend tracking application helps you track your weight level as opposed to relying on single daily data points that can be off for multiple reasons (water retention due to exercise, hormones, sodium, glycogen depletion or replenishment, amount of food in digestive system, time of day of weigh in)

use the same scale, with charged batteries, placed on un-yielding floor, in the morning, after using the bathroom and before eating or drinking and weigh yourself naked.

note that some scales will show no change till they detect a difference of more than a preset amount (often .5+ lbs) in a bid by the manufacturers to make their scales appear to be more consistent.

Anyway: use a trending weight application such as:
    Libra android
    happy scale iphone
www.trendweight.com with a supported scale or free fitbit.com account integration (available without a band)
www.weightgrapher.com with manual input, supported scale or fitbit.com account.

Add taking your measurements to your weigh-in. Scales see everything- water, muscle, etc. Measuring tape sees what's on the surface.
Also remember that this is a long haul process. Your weight will fluctuate, but as long as you see change for the better over long periods of time, you're doing fine! Like Pav8888 said, using a weight trend tracking app will help you see the long term changes. :)
