I'm happy I found this group! I'm looking for friends who have had or are scheduled to have gastric sleeve surgery. My surgery date is scheduled for 3/30/2016. I'm ready but nervous.
Would love to hear from you about some of the best and worst surprises about having gastric sleeve. I'm doing everything I can to educate myself and prepare.

Well, for me the biggest surprise was the small amount of liquid/foods that would be taken in. Yes, they said that the stomach would be about the size of a banana, but never said, "The first few days, expect about 1/4 cup at time for meals." So, even now, at 5 months out I'm still fascinated by the fact that I eat no more than a cup of food at a time. I totally overbought broth for the first few weeks and still have a bunch, and I gave away a bunch of stuff I know I wouldn't be using.
Also...you will stall. It is fairly common for people to stall when they first start introducing purees/solid foods. So don't freak out when the scale doesn't move for a few days!
OH...and right after surgery, if something bothers your stomach, play with temperatures. I still do better with hot or warm when my stomach seems irritated. Sometimes ice cold gives my stomach the equivalent of an ice cream headache (it's the best description I can give). I know others that said they lived on popsicles for a while and hot liquids bothered them. So it's definitely a game of trial and error. Same thing with foods...eggs seem to be a common issue for people. One day they are fine, the next day they sit like a rock.
If you have specific questions, feel free to ask or message! Good luck!0 -
