I plan a few days each year that I don't log...one of them being my bday.
Having said that, if you really don't want to go over, you're going to have to make a plan and be determined to stick with it. If you go in feeling even a bit unsure whether you want to overindulge or not, chances are very good that you will.

Pre-log your day. If you are going out to eat, factor that in and pick what you are going to eat now. Factor in cake or whatever dessert you want. And you don't have to eat a slab of cake. I've heard that the first 3 bites of a dessert are the best anyway. Maybe share a brownie sundae with someone, etc. You don't have to eat it all to enjoy and savor it. I would just pick a special indulgence for the day and figure out the rest of the day accordingly.

    and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

    Happy birthday!

What I did last month for my 30th, so as not to completely derail my success, I pre-logged the day and didn't eat my entire birthday cupcake like @jandsstevenson887 suggested. I don't really exercise all that much right now, but I made sure to fit in a brisk 15 minute walk before dinner to buy me just a little bit more wiggle room.

Why does it have to be all 'binge' drama?

How about you just enjoy your birthday and indulge a little, then carry on as normal tomorrow.

In the long term it won't even register as a blip. Any temporary scale weight gain will just be that, temporary.

It's my birthday today... All you can eat brunch buffet. Going in 2 hours. Not feeling bad about it at all!

One day won't derail you. I've enjoyed every single birthday the last 3 years (probably ate 3000 calories each time), still lost weight, still maintained the loss for 2 years. All that matters is that you get back on track the next day.

I'm also planning to do 2 hours on the treadmill though!

That being said, going over your calories will not make you gain fat. It takes 3500 calories over maintenance to gain one pound... Gaining water weight occasionally is completely normal, and it goes away after a few days. Just don't eat stuff you don't want that much just because it's there.

Binging is not enjoying yourself and relaxing from counting calories on your birthday--that's called relaxing and indulging a little.

I indulge on my birthday and have a good time and then I get back to it the next day. I have had many days of higher calories in the past year. I have managed to lose and keep it off. The only time I ever gained was over a two-to-three week period during Christmastime, it was only four pounds (which has since come back off) and that was overeating a lot every day during that time.

A day here and there is not enough to undo anything.

    Edited to clarifiy a little.

It was my birthday yesterday. I did a 5k run on the treadmill when I got up and after that, I just flat out indulged and enjoyed my day. OK, so the bit where I watched the Bruins get their arses handed to them on a plate wasn't much fun, but the rest was great. I had beer, cocktails, lots of delicious food, and plenty of chocolate. I logged it and now I'm back on the wagon.

you do not need to binge but you need to go into maintenance mode. celebrations aren't the time to lose weight

If you're trying to convince yourself that you can't eat what you want on your birthday, you're setting yourself up to fail. Eat the cake. Eat all the foods. You don't have to gorge yourself. Enjoy your birthday.

i eat what i want on my birthday. anything. however much. and enjoy every single bite.

ive lost just about 90 pounds.

a few days a year does not affect it. weight gain you are noticing is from water weight, and falls off pretty quick.

If you really really don't want to eat as much as you want, then maybe try to eat at maintenance? Or have a good workout the next day for damage control?

Plan what you will eat and drink.
    Eat at maintenance.
    Watch your sodium.
Eat lighter the rest of the day and have 1 big meal/dessert.
