@swimmyD most of the sinners here in China do the "defensive kick" breast stroke. Even swimming oval they swim near the middle of the lane on the one side so the don't luck the wall. Then sometimes a guy will be doing the same thing but along the other side of the rope. So I get a kick once in a while but have learned to evade it mostly.
Much better at home. There are times I have the entire 8 lane pool to myself

Swim class today. Both biceps tendons/rotator cuff tendons hurt; it's not the swimming, as I've been focused on kicking for a good couple weeks now. I've been tweaking how I sleep. hmmm.

@emmab0902 - sorry to hear. I herniated a disc six years ago and was unable to stand or sit for months. I was off work for 6 months. It was truly the worst pain. I sincerely hope that it is not a herniated disc, and if it is, I hope it's a small one and you can recover quickly. Physio really made a difference for me. T3's and anti inflammatories were my best friends.

@fishgutsy - 90% of the people swimming at my pool are from China, so now I know where it all starts. An empty 8 lane pool is something I can only dream about.

@rosebarnalice - you're doing amazing. Nice job this week!

@montepulciano - you're also doing amazingly well. Kudos to you for pushing hard to get into shape

@MightyLolo - you have got to be one of the most determined beginners ever! You'll be swimming like fishgutsy in a year! Keep going!

@MonkeyMel - glad you're having fun in the pool. I too enjoy flying by people doing freestyle while I'm breaststroking. Or just whip kicking, or even breast stroke pulling for that matter. I love breast stroke.

@mpeters65 - swimming while looking at clouds is amazing. Lucky you!!

Well, thank you! I don't know about swimming like fishgutzy, but I am well nigh indomitable.

@foshgutsy - have you ever considered doing a really big swim? Like Lake Ontario or the English Channel? I think you have what it takes!

Not just no. But heck no.
Not into competitive swimming. Just to get in shape. Swimming open water in my area isn't particularly safe either unless it is an organized event. Too much boat traffic on every lake.

Saw a guy on Friday night trying to teach himself front crawl.
His upper body was working valiantly, getting the and over. But his legs were still programmed for the breast stroke frog kick.
Seems a gradually increasing number of swimmers here are trying the front crawl.

    You are inspiring them!!

Damn it. I just now learned that "freestyle" is not a stroke, it's an event. It is called "front crawl". I just had never really heard the term front crawl. I've always said freestyle and kept getting confused on whether they were different strokes or what. Well, at least I learned something today, lol!

4 miles today. Started if sharing the lame with a woman doing beat stroke. I swear she was trying to kick me. Almost kicked me in the nose. But I survive.
Later, a 20 something was trying to do front crawl. Doing a better job than most. He was stopped at the end so I paused and Gabe him a couple of tips to improve his stroke and hopefully his speed. Luckily he some some English.

That was kind of you...and lucky for him.
I'm fluent in Mandarin, having spoken it every day for some eight years...but I didn't swim yet, then, so I know none of those terms, beyond the actual word for swimming. oops. I should look them up...

A lot of people train with a kayaker escort. I know that's not necessarily an option right now for you. But it does help with the boat traffic issue.

That said, I still have a passionate hatred of jet skis.

I LOVE kayaking. Hmm I need to find another kayaker/swimmer and we can trade off.

My instructor wants me to practice with the dreaded kickboard, learning to keep my head out of the water *and* my feet high. I figure I probably have weakness in hip and low back extension, from the surgeries, so I did it. I didn't, y'know, like it, but I think I actually made progress.
