The Elliptical Machine Office Desk: putting the 'commute' back in 'telecommuting'
Quite frankly, you've got it just a bit too easy. You rise 98 seconds before you're scheduled to clock in, you mash a power button, and suddenly, you're at work. PJs still caked to your legs, mouth still steaming from a lack of brushing. You're a telecommuter, and you're the envy of the working world. In fact, it'd be just stellar if you'd do us all a solid and add a sliver of complexity to your workday -- you know, like swapping out your OfficeMax special for an elliptical machine. And maybe, just maybe, you can convert your laptop into one that's pedal-powered, forcing you to keep churning for fear of dropping from the virtual office. And no, you can't ask for donations to cover the $8,000 price tag -- your fuel savings from last week alone should just about cover it. Harrumph.

I would love for my work to start offering these.

Wow, those are quite interesting. I was picturing something more stand up-ish when I saw elliptical.
I'd like to say I'd love one, but who am I kidding, that would really cut into my sitting around time

I think those of us chained to our desks are all in agreement...we want one! (Minus the $8000 price tag, of course)0

Ummmm!
I would rather have a stand up work station, although; I do like the idea of the motion of the machine powering the laptop. I was thinking that the motion of the machines at the gym should power the console. Then they could be green machines.0 -
WANT. NAOOOOOOO!0

I can just picture some extremely overweight phone tech support guy...call up and hear heavy breathing. Then suddenly you hear, "HOLD ON, I AM COMING TO A HILL!"0

How do you pitch this to the top execs?
"Well, I know I'm in finance, and yes, I know I don't actually make the company any money... but if you invest in this at least you'll know the person doing your financials looks damn good doing them ;-) "0 -

I love it!
I'm a telecommuter for Mayo Clinic, and a couple years ago, they did a study with some transcriptionists using treadmill desks. Unfortunately, I haven't heard the results of the study, but hopefully they'll start encouraging the use of devices like this!
When I worked on-site, they had adjustable sit-to-stand desks. But when we got sent home, we had to provide our own furniture. And $8000 is not in my price range.
I have seen some smaller units that fit under your desk, kind of like a mini bike. Amazon has one for $75 (http://www.amazon.com/Isokinetics-Inc-Brand-Deluxe-Exerciser/dp/B000LGAPZI).0 -
If you google Lifebalance Station, the same elliptical machine desk combo is being offered at a lot lower price. You can apparently also bargain with the dealers and get a discount as well.
