How do you survive on vacation?

I'm going to visit family in Europe next week and just started MFP. My family is big on bonding over food and I am also a sucker for pastries & and fully enjoying myself on vacations. How do I get through 10 days without overdoing it? Or do I just enjoy my trip and get back on track when I'm back at home?

Portion control is your friend! have a taste but don't go crazy. Eat small portions slowly. Take it easy on the bread and pasta. Alternate alcohol with water or club soda. Have fun!1

The same way I survive any other day...
I'm actually a lot more generally active while on vacation...I've never gained weight on vacation except for airplane bloat. Often I actually lose weight. We vacationed in Colombia last May for 10 days...enjoying the local cuisine is part of what makes a great vacation for me...I ate and drank copious amounts of beer and lost 4 Lbs...
We were pretty much out and about most days...we spent half the trip in Cartagena and toured the old city and spent a lot of time playing on the beach and in Medellin, we were out walking the city all day, every day.
We were also traveling with our friends who also happen to be our trainers so we got in a little training every morning.2 -

When I went a cruise early this year, I ate light for breakfast and lunch and then had a regular meal but portion controlled.1

I find this to be a tough one too. A few weeks ago I got back from a week with my wife at an all-inclusive resort in Mexico, and I had gained a couple of pounds. But I really wasn't careful, and ate much larger breakfasts than normal (at home just have oatmeal with fruit), and ate a lot of desserts.
I guess there is something in between the extremes of rigidly following an eating plan (and turning down most food opportunities on a vacation), and on the other hand just eating whatever you want. I like the suggestions people are giving of watching portion size, maintaining exercise while away, and perhaps eating smaller breakfasts and lunches, to enjoy dinner more.1
