I saw a Pain Specialist who told me I have severe arthritic changes in my back which are all something I have to live with and will get worse as I age. He told me I was old (51) and fat and I have to lose weight. Not that it will fix my arthritis but it will ease the pain and make the arthritis process slow down some. I am finding it hard to get motivated with that type of outlook for my future. Yet at the same time, I want to feel better and partiicpate in my life more, to get out there and have fun instead of focusing on my pain. Any words of wisdom on how to start while I am feeling this depressed about things right now?

Start slowly :-) ! I have rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. So I know what I absolutely can't do, what I can do and how much to push myself without going over board. That should be your focus. I have yet to try it because I just had a baby recently but water aerobics is said to be heaven for those with arthritis , also walking is good . Check out your local recreation center, they have senior fitness classes...perhaps those would appeal to you. Not only could you workout but you can be social at the same time.

Start out slowly, start with your food diary cutting back calories. Give it a couple of weeks of getting use to your new eating habit eati.g healthy and counting calories. Than start walking even if it 10 minutes. It counts. Hope this helps you. Add me as a friend if you like.

Welcome to MFP. I suggest that you make a commitment to MFP because you will soon discover that there are people with an assortment of obstacles to overcome. We all just keep pushing, and working toward being the best that we can be with the bodies we have.

Once you discover improvements in your quality of life after losing weight, you may have a less bleak outlook. My role model is my aunt who runs marathons at age 60 and fights to keep arthritis symptoms at bay. You can do this!

Welcome! I also just started actually using this site this week. I had arthroscopic knee surgery in January and have had continuous pain in my left knee due to really bad arthritis. I, too, was told I need to lose weight. my goal is 40-50 lbs. I can't doing any kind of impact exercise, but it was suggested I begin riding a bicycle....which I plan to do very soon. Was told it was very helpful with no impact.

Good luck with your journey! I know you will love it her. There is much support and some great tools.
