"Insulin suppresses the release of fats from fat cells.32 This forces the fat cells to flood the bloodstream with triglycerides when insulin levels are low, that is, after prolonged periods of fasting, such as overnight. The fat cells must dump enough triglyceride into the bloodstream during fasting periods to fuel the muscles when the dietary supply of carbohydrates keeps insulin levels elevated, and the release of fats from the fat cells is repressed. As the dietary carbs come in, blood sugar levels rise dramatically because the muscle cells can’t utilize them.

The liver also processes excess glucose into fat, and packages it up into LDL, to further supply fuel to the defective muscle cells. Because the liver is so preoccupied with processing glucose and fructose into LDL, it falls behind on the generation of HDL, the “good” cholesterol. So the result is elevated levels of LDL, triglycerides, and blood sugar, and reduced levels of HDL, four key components of the metabolic syndrome....."

Two papers on theories related to cholesterol sulfate are currently under review. Stephanie will give an all-day workshop on metabolism at Wise Traditions 2011.

As you could guess this paper goes deeper into the subject than many may care but it has 39 references if one wants to go deep into the causes of metabolic syndrome. Some of the comments at the end were interesting to me. Yesterday I started trying MSM crystals for the first time at the rate of 12 grams/6 teaspoons daily divided into three dosages. So far so good. It does not taste great but I have no problem drinking a dose dissolved in a cup of warm water.

Does anyone have personal experience taking MSM supplement?

I take 4000mg MSM daily - 2 capsules in the morning and 2 in the evening. I've been taking it for I believ about 3 years now. When I first started taking it, I did notice within a few days that it did help with my various pain issues, in fact it got to the point where I could tell when it had worn off within about 30-minute window. Having since gone LCHF, which, as you know, helps manage pain/inflammation issues so well on it's own, I'm much less aware of the MSM now though I still take it. This is the brand I take:

Not sure it anything I said above was helpful but feel free to pm me if you like.

@ladipoet thanks for sharing your experience. Over the years I guess I tried it a few times but never really understood why it is needed by the body. Now that I am trying to get serious about mercury removal I have been reading more about it.

Yesterday six pounds of Gold Standard Organic Sulfur arrived so I am trying it myself and for the pets. Our dog is old and stove up.

Your brand is processed by distillation which I read yields the best MSM on the market for eating.

No problem @GaleHawkins...you are most welcome. I hope it helps you both.

Yes, I know - I do try to research supplements (or anything really for that matter - LOL) very thoroughly before I purchase and try them out. :)

I take pure sulfur crystals for fibromyalgia. I've been doing it for about 3 months now. It helps quite a bit with muscle pain. I use to feel sore for a full week or more after just a simple workout or even walking more than usual, which kept me from doing much of anything. I'm now able to go to a beginner Pilates class twice a week and am usually only a little sore the next day. So far I've only noticed a slight improvement in arthritis pain, but am hoping that there is some improvement there with time also.

Thanks @Riche120. I have read in some cases the results come fast and for others it can take 3-6 months to realize max results. I am glad MSM crystals helps with your fibromyalgia muscle pain. It seems in some cases help with many different kinds of health issues.

While I am only 48 hours heavily into MSM so far all is positive. I did start Ashwagandha two weeks ago so that may be kicking in to decrease muscle and joint pain a bit more than just LCHF WOE as well.

This the most complete info I have found on how to take MSM supplements. I am doing the flakes and learned in my case it is true if I just put them in my mouth and wash them down with water there really was no bitter taste (not a bad bitter even when dissolved) like went I melt them in warm/hot water.

MSM never helped my fibro unfortunately, but I have found other things that work - I take reishi mushroom extract to support the mitochondrial energy pathways that do not work properly in our case. That, extra magnesium, and being strictly gluten free have worked for my body. But of course every body is different... Interesting paper.

@canadjineh your post drives home how differently we may respond to the same foods/supplements for sure.

I am taking about 10 grams/one tablespoon of MSM 3x daily but since I had started taking a couple grams of Ashwagandha daily a couple weeks earlier I am not sure which or if both have taken a bit out of my remaining pain. My morning stiffness is less and my stamina is up.

I did move to a better rated source of Ashwagandha and I think that helped.

Both MSM and Ashwagandha are parts of anticancer protocols that I am testing on myself to see if I have any problems from the supplements themselves.

Clearly cutting out sugar and all grains was the major action that started me on the road of recovery nearly two years ago. In my case I think as my health recovers tweaking my supplements is more possible.

It is awesome to read reports like yours and others that actually find ways of eating and supplements that improves the quality of life. We can get sick because of many different causes so what works to help us recover truly varies from body to body as you point out.

I take 9g MSM daily and have for about 4 months for carpal tunnel...I want to say it took a good month before I noticed any difference in symptoms and then it did seem to help considerably but did not 100% clear up my issues so I also added B6...I started with Nature's Sunshine brand, but then switched to VitaCost brand - I did not notice any difference in results between the brands though the VC ones are bigger and not coated so they taste terrible, plus they were on sale so I managed to get about 7 bottles for the price of 1 NSP bottle.

Recently I was on vacation and failed to pack my vitamins - after about 5 days off the MSM I noticed the carpal tunnel getting worse, however within a few days of returning to dosage it was better, so at least when there is an interruption it doesn't take a whole month to start working again.

Thanks @RalfLott for the reminder! I didn't take it while on vacation and well, "out of sight - out of mind." I forgot to start taking it again when I got back so I've been a little over a month without it. I have been trying to figure out why I've been so achy lately. I was blaming it on the holidays, but its entirely possible that its the lack of sulfur (and maybe a few Christmas cookies.)

Up until I forgot to take it though, my pain levels were definitely lower, a lot lower. I noticed the improvement with fibro pain the fastest, the arthritis pain improved too, actually quite a bit, it just took a bit longer. It didn't fix things 100% but, in my opinion, there was enough of an improvement to make it worth taking. I'll be taking it again starting right now and report back soon. Thanks again for the reminder!

Thanks @RalfLott.... that reminds me. I tried to pare back on my supplements when we went on vacation, because, you know.... that extra checked bag full of pills could be the deal breaker. I did miss my MCT oil and my FemMed herbal supplement- had a couple of minute hot flashes that I haven't had for 6 months or so. I also didn't take my extra A & D3 (figured I'd be getting more in the sun anyhow). I did make sure to take my Reishi Extract, my Magnesium pills, and the Selenium for my thyroid. I don't think I suffered too much, although my neck was pretty stiff & sore on & off during the trip - I think it was the thick fluffy pillows though. Mine at home is quite thin and sometimes I don't use anything under my head or at times just a tiny rolled up hand towel in the curve of my neck while sleeping on my back.

update - I increased my MSM from 9g to 13.5g which helped a lot and enabled me to lift heavier without being in pain, however, that high of a dosage left me unable to fall asleep at night. A little research revealed that MSM boots your metabolism of magnesium, so even if you are getting the same amount, you are using more. A topical magnesium solved the sleep problem, one squirt right before bed does the trick.

It has actually been several months since I really thought about my carpal tunnel on a daily basis, it has become something that is no longer at the forefront of all my thoughts, which is kind of a nice feeling, kind of like not being a prisoner in my body for a change!
