My workouts are actually for fitness. Once upon a time I just did cardio, cardio, cardio...because calorie burn was the most important thing.
Not anymore. I want to be thin & fit, not thin and squishy. Strength training doesn't have much in the way of calorie burn, but it's so important if I don't wan't to be soft and doughy.
Just find exercise you like and hopefully you will continue it even after you get to goal. Moving more is going to be helpful for maintenance too.9 -
Cardio
Cycling is a good one1 -
Fork put downs and table push aways...
Personally, I think it's important to start looking at fitness for the sake of fitness. Regular exercise has the added benefit of burning a handful of extra calories, but it's generally insignificant relative to the energy expenditure of existence and going about your day to day.
One issue I always see with the exercise for weight loss mentality is that people stop doing it once they've reached whatever arbitrary number on the scale they're shooting for...they fail to understand that fitness for the sake of fitness is a thing and should be done for your overall health and general well being. If exercise was just for weight loss, a bunch of us maintainers are doing it wrong...
In regards to burning calories, that isn't so much a matter of one specific exercise over another...it's more about mass moved over distance plus intensity...the best exercise is going to be the one that you enjoy and will stick to and be consistent with...not only now, but in maintenance as well.14 -

This is so worth repeating...
Actually my weight loss improves when I focus on exercise for fitness. When I was exercising to burn calories it seemed as if all I was doing was thinking about food. Now that I don't associate the two...both weight loss and fitness are improving.6 -
Cardio. Generally elliptical while watching TV or reading to make the time go by faster.
It really comes down to anything you will do though.1 -

I couldn't agree with this more. I had a mind-shift this year and it's making a big difference.3 -
Whatever you enjoy and will do on a consistent basis. But weight loss still depends on controlling food intake.4
-
I like food more than I don't like doing cardio. So doing it means I get to eat more food while losing weight.4
-
I manage my calories for weight loss and I exercise for fitness/well being.4
-
Whatever gets my happy hormones flowing so that I don't seek stress release from food.3
-
Walking and strength training.
Walking for piece of mind.
Strength training because I want to crush men with my thighs. I kid, I kid!!!! I saw that funny on Pinterest.
I want to be fit and stronger in my older years, because I piddled my youth away on chips.4 -
Love to hit up the rink as often as I can - but I do that for my own progress within skating, not for weight loss (though I'd love to wear a heart-rate monitor one day and see how I go doing double run-throughs).0

I always had a hard time working out and hated it. So what I did was I found a hiking trail and got out into the sunshine and walked a trail everyday for an hour . Lost 25 pounds with that and eating lots of veggies with protein

Dancing is also a good way to lose weight because it doesn't even feel like you're working out.1

Once upon a time ago, I tried the Exercise for Weight Loss approach...and I hated it. Treadmills, ellipticals, torturous stuff..no no no. Never again. I don't care how "healthy" it is - if I don't love it, I don't do it. Period.
Most people here do it for fitness. That's a good goal.
To be honest, I can't even really claim that. My exercises are purely for enjoyment and stress relief. I walk, dance, and cycle, and it makes me feel alive and invincible. I don't have to think about anything else except what I'm doing at that present moment.
The extra calories are a nice bonus.0 -

This is the correct answer. I highly recommend exercise but exercise is for fitness. Calorie deficits are for weight loss.1 -
Strength training with some cardio mixed in. I like data so seeing numbers go up, whether it is weights, reps, miles, or times (well those go down) satisfy me. Anything that makes you move will help. Find what makes you happy. For me that is running, any back exercise, and the stairmaster!1

I also do exercise that I love- I enjoying walking, some strength training(lighter weights for now), dancing, HIIT and I am always trying new things to see what i like1

I exercise because I enjoy it plus I get a bonus1

In my world, so-called workouts are mainly for fun, but they have a beneficial side effect of fitness. I row (mostly - both on water & occasionally machine), spin (couple times a week), ride my bike in nice weather, walk sometimes, lift weights sometimes, do a li'l yoga/stretching . . . . y'know, have fun.
Weight loss is mainly about eating sensibly.
I was very active for a dozen years (doing pretty much the same stuff I do now, like 45 minutes to an hour, usually 6 days a week), but still stayed obese (though I did get reasonably fit). Only when I got my eating where it needed to be did I lose 1/3 of my bodyweight. It's super easy to out-eat most reasonable amounts of exercise.0 -
If you're looking to burn a lot of calories I would go with cycling. While most people won't burn calories as quickly with cycling as they would with running, it is less damaging to the body than most exercises so you can keep riding until you burn the number of calories you want to burn. But that being said, there are a lot of fat cyclists. Even if you go out and burn a couple thousand calories, you won't lose weight if you eat too much.1

Well I am glad many of you are much more motivated than me and only working out for fitness. Unfortunately I am not there yet. I am working out to lose weight and ultimately get healthier hoping as some point it will only be for fitness. But that's not the case right now. I actually enjoying exercising it isn't an issue for me. It's just making the time to do it.
And my food intake is actually really good. I eat lots of lean meats, veggies, fruits. Havent really had an issue there.
Thank you to all who gave wonderful suggestions.
