Alright, finally got onto my bike today for a commute into work. Pretty cold but at least the bike path was cleared of snow, though few ice patches. I do have an indoor trainer but have been lacking the motivation to ride. Maybe once my ANT+ reader comes in and I can move Zwift to the PC instead of my phone I might be more motivated to ride.

    Feb 1-5: 42.1km
    Feb 6-12: 148km
    Feb 13-19: 7km

    Goal: 550km
    KM left until Goal: 352.9km

I quit smoking 8 yrs ago and bought a bicycle. Best decision I could of made!! Sure enjoy riding, my favorite is my Fat Bike that I ride on our farm. It's perfect going through any terrain! Starting to hit the trails since warm weather is beginning!

Set up a new ride in RideWithGPS today. Would have been a lovely ride for a summer evening, with loads of small lanes and riverside cycle paths, wending backwards and forwards over the Thames. However, riding it for the first time in the dark? Not so much.

Still, it becomes my longest single ride, even after I had to drastically redesign it in the middle to get home at a reasonable time

First I was dealing with back issues and then had some neck trouble but finally got out on my bike this month and enjoyed it so much! :D So, I made a slight inroads into my Feb. goal, which I think was 50 miles:

    02/18/17 10 miles, 46 minutes

I'm trying to get back to exercise after hip surgery (piriformis). I think it's time to get the bike out. I had been running before surgery.

I am not coordinated or strong enough yet to unclip in the outwards motion from my Shimano clipless pedals. I can unclip inwards though.

@SteveCro made the point that that may not be advisable since it forces the momentum opposite of putting your foot down.

I'd like to keep the upward pull on the pedal stroke if possible. (I could go back to regular pedals) I was looking at the SpeedPlay pedals, thought they might be easier to get out of? They also have a 0-15° side to side float, which may be useful in rebuilding strength in my case.

    Any suggestions? Experience?

    Thanks.

Double groin strain stopped play for 4 days.
Even though it's still a little sore I have started cycling again now.
Taking it easy and a little longer and I should hopefully still hit my target.
Man it's a little frustrating to put up with though.

    Elise4270...
I admire you for getting back on a bike after such an op.
I would maybe go for a standard pedal but with a cage, easy to get foot in and out plus you can still pull as well.
Main thing is to keep the hip moving, (but don't over do it) any exercise which you choose to do that will help you recover well and stronger.
You'll soon be back in the saddle in no time clipping and all.
    Good luck.

January - Achieved 181.79 Miles - No target set.

    1st Feb – 0 Miles
    2nd Feb – 21.17 Miles on Rollers
    3rd Feb - 11.08 Miles on Rollers
    4th Feb - 26.10 Miles on Rollers

    6th Feb - 0 Miles
    7th Feb - 14.03 Miles on Rollers
    8th Feb - 0 Miles
    9th Feb - 0 Miles
    10th Feb - 31.04 Miles on Rollers
    11th Feb - 0 Miles
    12th Feb - 40.68 Miles on Rollers
    13th Feb - 13.58 Miles on Rollers

    17th Feb - 0 Miles
    18th Feb - 6.49 Miles on Rollers

Has Spring sprung in southern England? :glasses: Double digit temperatures this weekend.

One of those rites of Spring is switching my default bike on Strava from an indoor to an outdoor bike.....

No mileage target this month, just to do as much as possible. Fitness levels are down following a couple of bouts of illness but recovering at last.

    Miles so far this month:
Indoors (mix of Wattbike, eSpinning bike and Turbo Trainer in the garage)-
    126.1

    Outdoors-
    59.6

Thanks @twenaj. I don't mind the toe cages. I have some nerve damage in my foot. Idk how they'll work. So I am not sure I wanna go that route yet. Least. They are cheap.

    Just kickin' options around.

@Elise4270 I'm still very much a newbie to biking. So with that disclaimer: when I bought my bike, it came with Look pedals. They freaked me out because I found it really hard to unclip. At the suggestion of a collague, I switched to Time RXS pedals. They seem to require a lot less force to unclip.
But they do cost some money; maybe too much to order them if you don't know if they'll work for you. Maybe you can find a bike shop when you can try different pedals?

Yes that's what I plan on doing. I don't mind spending the money. I have a bit saved from my now non-runner running account.

We have a small LBS I can get information from. He'll even put them on and align them properly if needed. If they don't carry what I decide on. I can find it in Dallas.

@Elise4270 I asked my hubby (the more experienced cyclist) about loosening the tension. Have you tried to loosen the tension on the pedals? I did this when I was first learning how to clip in and out as I was having trouble unclipping.

Speedplay is most definitely a good option. Hubby said that several of the guys in his riding group moved to that brand after back, knee, and hip surgeries.

Look pedals have an adjustable flow. They might work for you.

Hubby recommends trying to loosen the tension on your current pedals first - before investing in the Speedplay (which may require you to purchase new shoes too).
