How does one start "lifting"?

I have made great progress with my weight loss, but now I want to add some weight lifting to my life and have no idea where to start. Do I just move from machine to machine at my local gym, or is should I be starting with free weight? what weight amount, reps?
Completely new, and not really wanting to hire a personal trainer to help me out.
Thanks

Lifting itself is pretty straight forward- you pick up a weight- and then you put it down.
But a program is helpful- starting strength, strong lifts, new rules of lifting, strong curves- all great places to start learning how to do the things.2 -
You should use a structured program...there are numerous beginner programs out there...New Rules of Lifting for Women...Strong Curves....SL 5x5...and countless others.
Most quality programs are going to utilize compound movements (and variations of these movements) with free weights as the foundation. Machines have their place, but they're primarily isolation movements.1
