Donated blood today

One of the interesting factoids off the information sheet is that if you register with the blood donation place, you can get your cholesterol when the blood was drawn. I will be interested to see what it is. It would have been about 5 hours after I last ate, so it won't be a fasting cholesterol, and it may only be a total. Supposedly I can register and get the number(s) in 48 hours. BP was 132/74, and body temp was 97.9. I passed the hemocrit(?) test.

Thanks for donating-- I'm dependent on blood products. I wouldn't have survived this last year if it weren't for the likes of you!
I hope your cholesterol is spot on

I am advised by both my Dr and the Blood Donor clinic that I can't give blood unless circumstances are dire (desperate call for blood donation due to national disaster, that kind of thing) because I am a Thalassaemia (Minor).
It wouldn't be beneficial to either the recipient, or to me.
I also have it on my organ Donor records that "This person has Thalassaemia Minor. Consideration should be given to this for the first six months, post-transplant operation." (apparently after that time, the pertinent organ should have sufficiently been adapted to the recipient, to warrant review and/or suspension of certain supportive medications....)0 -
I think this was my 53rd donation over the years. They used to keep track and gave me a six gallon pin when I hit 48. The past few times I have donated, they seem to have a new system every time, and I have to register again. It does not really inspire confidence that records like this get lost in the system.
This is my first donation since being on the LCHF diet, and I have always felt "better" after donating. I am sure it is in my head, but I did wonder if it would be any different this time around. Energy levels were good afterwards. This is the first time I have ever donated and skipped the high carb snack they try to get you to eat while you wait 10 minutes before going on your way.1 -
YAY!!! I gave blood yesterday too!!! BP 108/65 (after 3 shots of espresso - otherwise it's sometimes too low to donate), iron 12.5 (the minimum to donate), temp 97.5 - I don't know if I can get cholesterol scores, but now I'm going to have to log in and see what is available on the blood donation site. I felt pretty woozy afterward so I took the high carb snack (pirates booty), and pretty much ate whatever I wanted the rest of the day while still trying to get a decent amount of protein. I did track so I would know how over I was and today the goal is to be back on plan!0

I checked the online data, and remembered the BP and temp. Hematocrit was 48, so right in the middle of the adult male range. Cholesterol is not up yet.0

I used to give blood 3-6 times a year. I had a gallon pin from 2 different groups and was close to or over that amount with another. Then, they changed the requirements and I am no longer able to donate. I lived in Germany on a US military base in the early 80's. Apparently, during that time our beef was coming through the Britain so Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (mad cow) is a concern. From what I can determine from limited research, the only way to know if you are infected is autopsy of the brain since not everyone infected develops symptoms and those that do can develop them decades later.
This change really sucks from a supply standpoint because I am pretty sure military personnel and their families probably give at a higher rate than the general public given more have personally been affected by the need for the donations. The areas affected in Europe are ones where a high percentage of military were stationed in the 80's. I know both my parents and both my brothers used to donate regularly as well until this change. I'm not sure if my sister did.1 -
I was lucky enough to be stateside by 1980, so I'm still eligible. AND thanks to the previous posts I logged into my blood donor site and they do have a section for cholesterol results!!! Who knew these things existed!!! It must be fairly new because none of my previous donations are listed and there is a note about yesterday's donation and how it takes 3 days usually to have your data show up on the site.
I will get cholesterol testing now with my donations - fascinating!!!0 -

It is a cool bonus. It seems unlikely it will impact my donation frequency, but it is good to get thye data point between lipid panels. Now the question is how does the non-fasting number correspond to the fasting?

@cstehansen - My biggest worry when I first started donating was transfusion contamination. I had multiple blood transfusions in the late 70's (before they screened for HIV and a number of other things) due to an amputation (finger, partial) and subsequent failed reattachment/removal surgeries. Because of this, I was considered high risk for the first several donations until screenings (multiple) cleared me. I still am not sure what repercussions I may have suffered as a result of this trauma. Since then, I started failing the hemocrit/iron screenings, and then my hypothyroidism was so bad, along with my insulin resistance, that it will not advised until I got my health better managed.
In the last several years, I struggle daily with dehydration issues and such, so I've actually gotten scared of whole blood or even plasma (untried) donations...and haven't in years. I think I'll look about for the next donation and try to "get back in the saddle" of the process. Considering that obviously, early in my life, blood donations saved my life, I need to get back in the loop of donating...to pay it foward.0 -
Just think of the keto energy high the person will get when your blood is pumped into them1

I got my cholesterol results back from the blood donation draw. Total was 211 as a non-fasting number, so I am not sure how that corresponds to fasting, and it was not broken down. This is a data point but not a lot of information. My last lipid panel was 156 total and I went off the statin - just on my own. The next lipid panel will be in in July.0

I think under 200 for total cholesterol is a good number, but I could be way off.
If your total cholesterol went up, I am guessing it was mainly your HDL. HDL tends to rise and affect total cholesterol when LCHF.
And very nice on the donation.

I will see in more detail when I get a proper panel.1
