Vegetarian Snacks

Hello all! After a lot of self-examination and getting real with myself, I've come to realize that my biggest hurdles when it comes to my eating habits is my snacking. I am DEFINITELY a carb junkie! Before I even get home from work I'm already thinking about the tortilla chips I have in the pantry. My brain just shuts off and the cravings takeover until I've eaten enough chips to have a stomach ache.

Rather than try to get rid of snacking COMPLETELY I want to replace my empty carb snacks with snacks that are lower calorie and will satiate me. I am a vegetarian and am looking for good low(er) calorie snack suggestions. Here is what I currently enjoy:

-fruit (banana, apples, grapes)
-vegetables/legumes (carrots, edamame, baked chickpeas, kale chips)
-apples slices with a little peanut butter (natural, no sugar/salt)
-skinny pop popcorn

Thank you in advance!!!

Bill

What about something more protein based - hard boiled eggs, yoghurt or cottage cheese with mix-ins, some dip with your vegies?

Another option is to try increasing your meal sizes, but eat less frequently and see if you're more satiated/satisfied that way. It seems backwards, but may help.

Oh those evil tortilla chips! The devil's handiwork.
Hummus or baba ganoush with cucumber slices and red or green pepper slices and broccoli to dip in it.
Trader Joe's Red Pepper Spread (or if you don't have access to TJ's look for ajvar--eye-var--at the store. Zergut is a popular brand.) same dipping arrangements. Or something bready/crackery.
Homemade refries and salsa on a corn tortilla. Feels like you're getting away with something even though you aren't.
Tostitos Baked Scoops. They are great as a vehicle for dippish things, but mostly too cardboardy to sit down and just eat a bag. Not greasy enough to be as satisfying Though that is not to say it can't be done.

I try to have protein in my snack since I am not eating meat. Here are a few of my favorite quick snacks..
    • Boiled egg
    • cottage cheese crackers or fruit
    • peanut/almond butter with apple
    • almonds with raisins,wasabi peas
    • cheese cubes with figs and apple slices

The more crunch in the snack the better. The more you chew it triggers your brain to get those digestive juices flowing and increase the feeling of being satisfied.

My gotos right now are celery and peanut butter, colored peppers, hard boiled egg, and salsa, strawberries and Greek yogurt.
