    Found this interesting:

    Eating rice with chopstick is accepted but traditionally considered to be practice of low class and may be frowned upon.

    Traditionally, one will use chopsticks to pick up a side dish, lay it down on the table, then pick up the spoon to eat rice or soup.

    So is sticking your chopsticks into your food at a perpendicular angle. You only do this if you're giving the rice as a ceremonial offering to a deceased person:

    I think it's a combination response: Some are genuinely happy that you're trying out their utensils and attempting to fit in; others are probably silently judging/laughing at you and there's a third category who probably just think the chopstick user is an amusement for them to giggle at.

    Yes. I can also play Chopsticks on the piano. (It's one of about four songs in my repertoire.)
