What nobody tells you about losing weight

One things that nobody tells you about loosing weight is that loosing weight doesn't make your general, life problems disappear. Yes, it does remove many problems, but just loosing weight doesn't magically mean you are gonna go from depressed to super happy, from anxious to super confident. You will still be you, your life will still be your life. Your regrets will still be there, your failures, your bad life choices, etc.
Yes, you will be healthier, you will look better, you will move easier, you will buy clothes more easily, etc. But you will still be you, in your life.
However, it does not mean that you should not bother to loose weight, on the contrary..I am writing this for all like me, who come close to their goal, get disappointed and then gain it all back.
We should loose weight and we should keep it off despite it's not one way ticket to heaven.26 -

This.
I believe losing the weight may make the real underlying problems even more profound. Nowhere to hide from them? I don't know.
I am reading this thread for ongoing inspiration. I have over 90 pounds left to lose (down almost 20 so far). I get to a certain size and mentally check out and blow up again. I do not know why. I have started therapy now in the hopes that as I continue to lose weight I'll be in a better place when I hit that tipping point.26 -
I'm losing weight AGAIN, but from previous experience:
-You will more than likely lose your boobs.
-It can give you the confidence to do something you NEVER would have before.
-No more being so embarrassed by what is in the grocery basket.
-People think that just because you lost weight you are stuck up now, and somehow your choices for yourself automatically are a negative comment about their own choices. (NO, I'm just making healthier choices, that means I'm not gonna order the burger, I'll get the salad instead. Get whatever you want, I'm not going to say anything and I'm not silently judging you!)14 -

I agree with all if this except the boobs - I would love for those to reduce. First place I put on and the last place it goes from.8 -

I'm with you on this one... my boobs have grown continuously (along with the rest of my weight, apart from some weight loss periods) since I was 13. I'm ready to be done now, at 26.

For me its a few things:
- Not deleting pictures of yourself when tagged on Facebook as you're unhappy how you look.
- Being less conscience of how people see you. You're confident enough to know you are looking at least okay!
- Having more confidence with woman. Basically until I'm happy I will barely talk except pleasantries.
- Being able to fit into clothes you haven't in years.
- Wearing clothes you bought years ago which you've never worn because you never got into them!
- More energy and a willing to help others who are overweight and suffering.
I'm not 100% where I want to be but I'm much happier than I was.

I can’t believe how cold I am.
I used to be permanently warm, with a flushed complexion. Now I have to wear layers, and I’ve still go quite a bit of weight to lose.
You were probably always flushed because your heart was having to work very hard and you were unfit.
Now you're fitter and slimmer the body is working more efficiently.9 -
One thing I have recently discovered is how many other obese and overweight people out there there really are. Before I never really noticed since they just blended in. I don't like that I notice this now. I am unsure if I am more often looking now when I did not before or why I am seeing it so much. I am not judging them. If anything it makes me sad because I know most are likely unhappy about it.
I have also learned that jealousy is really a mean beast. I have a friend who has been less than happy for me and my loss. Time to assess that friendship I tell yah!34 -

This happens I think just because we become more thoughtful about health in general and where we used to be physically and mentally and we are realizing what we were like before the weight loss. I use to have a drink or milkshake in my hand when driving. Now when I see this most often it is an obese person like I was so I make the connection with one reason I was obese.
Listening to people talking about their health issues while eating a 2000 calorie meal makes me want to scream because that was me 4 years ago.
On a positive note I am taken back that some people are now asking questions about how much better I am walking and moving after cutting out added sweeteners and all forms of all grains. Some even use the terms low carb and keto and state they are trying it. In these cases I mention while it has worked well in my case to walk death backwards that they should work to find the best Way Of Eating for their own bodies and mention that can take a long time.
As far as jealousy goes I try to ignore it and thankful I tend to not notice it. Anyone that wants me to leave my family and future grandkids, ect due to a premature death their thoughts and actions just do not matter. At 67 I have the best health I can remember over the past 40 years and life just gets better and better quality wise. Last weekend I entered my first antique tractor show with a 52 year old tractor I have been working on since last year. Since it was nearby I actually drove it the tractor to the fairgrounds.
Now I decide how I want to feel and just lose the jealous ones mentally or physically if not both.
Best of continued success to all.29 -
It's weird but I think that I can guesstimate people's TDEE now. I noticed an older, very short lady only having half a sandwich for lunch and realized that her maintenance calories are probably close to 1,200.... so lower than my cutting calories. I've just spent so much time playing around with those calculators that I think I have a Spidey Sense for that kind of thing now.26

This is just so sad, that people you regard as friends can't be happy for you

Like this whole thread has stated, socializing is harder when you're making actively healthy choices. I feel like a snooty rhymes-with-witch when I'm going over to eat at a friend's, or going out for food, and I eat an obviously smaller portion than everyone else.
It doesn't help that some of my friends are bigger and make fun of people who eat a small amount and then are like, "Oh I'm so full." Like nobody can ever actually be full off a single serving and they're just showboating. Now I'm that person.
But it's not pretend! I actually am full! I literally cannot shove the amount of food into my face I used to, because it makes me feel literally sick!
That combined with the fact I also no longer drink alcohol (interacts poorly with a medication, and plus I just don't like feeling stupid and drunk) makes me feel like everyone thinks I'm judging their choices or that I think I'm better than them, when that couldn't be farther from the truth. I just do it for me... they can do whatever they want.24 -
* You sleep better at night, and it's easier to get up in the morning.
* Your skin looks better.
* Your joints feel less achy/creaky.
* Your libido increases! :-)19 -

I had no idea how hard it would be to find clothes at clearance sales. S, XXL, and XXXL, tons of stuff. Other sizes, not so much.10
-
That you may not change sizes. On my current journey, I'm down 30 lbs. and I'm still in the same size clothing i was 30 lbs ago. I do notice that things fit a bit differently to be sure, but I still can't get the next size down to button properly etc.

This. The number of times I've looked at clearance tables, or sale items to find the sizes I used to wear but can't find an M or L to save few bucks on. Ticks me off some days.8 -

This!!!
For long term success, taking the time to find or tailor a program that works best for your body cannot be stressed enough. Some people do well on low fat diets, some on low carb and some on high carb or high protein diets. Like GaleHawkins, my body reacts better to the elimination of refined flour and sugar products. I also feel fuller longer with an increase in protein, whereas high carb diets leave me constantly hungry. The key is finding what works best for your body.9
