Quick guess please 😃

249lbs male I haven't got a fitbit yet but would I be right in guesstimating that an hour walk at moderate pace would burn around 5 calories per minute totalling APPROX 300 in an hour?

Walking is bodyweight in lbs x 0.3 x distance in miles

How reliable is that formula? Is it set in stone? It would make my 5.5 mile walk 410 calories.

If your "moderate pace" was 4mph for that hour then that would be a really good estimate (75 net cals per mile walked for your bodyweight).

I use "Walking, 3.0 mph, mod. pace, walking dog" as it does take me 20 minutes to do a mile on flat terrain.

5.5mph is a lot faster than most people would describe moderate pace. How accurate is that distance?

Yeah, that's an awfully fast walking pace. I would be lightly jogging at that rate. It's possible, but fast.

It is definitely 5.5 miles as I've driven it twice and clocked the distance. It does take me 1hr45mins if that makes any difference?

Sorry I was just using an hour walk as an example.

When I do cardio on the treadmill at PF I use 3.5 or 3.6 as the speed setting. That is moving fairly well. 4.0 - not sure that I would want to do that for one hour! But that is me.....51yo 6'0" @ 205lbs male.

So..you are doing a 2.9 or a 3.0. Something like that. When I am doing my hour I end up at 1.4 miles.

For "normal" pace walking (which 5.5mph wouldn't be) then the distance is the key thing, not the duration.

The 0.3 x bodyweight per mile is a well used formula and gives net calories (avoiding a failing of some other methods which estimate gross calories which gives a significant overestimate for long duration/low calorie burn activities).

Works out as 374 net cals for you at your current weight for your 5.5 mile walk.
