Recommend your running watch...
I'm selling my Fitbit Alta HR because I just don't use it anymore. Since using Strava there is not really any point in using it for tracking (Strava is more accurate anyway). I easily get my 10k steps and have an app on my phone for the reminder to move (good when you spend a good chunk of your day sitting), and I honestly think I sleep better not knowing how much deep sleep I've had.
BUT it would be nice to have a GPS capable watch for long runs. Something I would probably only wear for running, so I don't have to have my phone on me. I have a Ipod shuffle for music (I think it still works, have to fire it up to test it out - I usually use my phone) so a watch would be great. Less to worry about on race day.
Recommendations please! and would you buy second hand? I'm not likely to be able to afford brand new anytime soon - given in NZ electronics tend to be 30% more expensive than the US.
Anyone know anythign about Timex Ironman GPS Watch? I can get a second hand one that's an unwanted gift for !150 ($98USD)0 -

I am a well-documented fan of the Garmin line. You can sometimes find old models on clearance, and refurbs can be found too. What is your budget?

Well I'm just researching. Ideally i'd like to only spend no more than 200NZD (130USD) - preferably around the $150 mark - hence looking at second hand. Know anything about Timex Ironman GPS Watch? I can get a second hand one that's an unwanted gift for !150 ($98USD)0 -

- I prefer a GPS HR watch to record run and then an auto upload to Garmin/Strava vs using the Strava app on the phone, but I still carry a phone on the run for music/podcasts, etc.
- Re Second Hand purchase. I have had success buying used tech both online and locally. A year ago, I purchased locally a 1 year old Garmin Fenix 3 HR at a great price since the user wanted the newly released Fenix 5. In the States, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp, etc are all effectively online/local exchanges and EBay does a decent job in giving buyers confidence with different options to help with a purchase and your satisfaction, etc...however, bottom line, when buying something used, research and buyer beware is always a good idea.
- Don't know much about Ironman watch, but if there are used watches out there, a quick google search, Amazon reviews, etc can let you know how others like/dislike and/or if there are support issues to be on the look for (i.e. can it upload to Strava, is their app good/bad, battery life, etc). If the watch has issues, buying used will just magnify the experience as negative that might be more related to the product vs purchasing it used.2 -

Garmin Forerunner 220 is probably a good option. Depending on the condition and price I think you could be very happy with it. It will have all the basics.

I brought my running stuff to work today in case I need to go to the Y after. About an hour or so before I was done with work soccer practice was cancelled due to weather/field conditions, but skies were sunny by me. I wasn’t really feeling the treadmill, but I knew it was pouring at home so took a chance and walked out to grab the clothes. There was one dark cloud when I got outside, but it looked like it was moving past. I started out and was maybe a half mile down the path when I saw the rain coming. It was a quick downpour and was over by the time I was done with the first mile or so. It was 80 degrees out so quickly turned very humid, but getting caught in the rain was fun (if the weather was cold it would be a different story).

Oh what a fun run this morning...super humid (72F dew point), so my top was already completely wet within the first few miles. It was around mile six though that I felt my nipples starting to hurt, and suddenly realized I hadn't put any NipEaze on...oops. Off comes the top to prevent any further chafing, and I then made my way back to the office gym to grab some Band Aids from the first aid cabinet.
No first aid cabinet...what the heck, they have them throughout the offices, but not in the gym where you would think people are more likely to actually need one? I did see a roll of masking tape on a shelf though. Top tip: masking tape has at least one more usage scenario than I would have previously considered.
After that, I went back out and met up with the group around mile nine, and ran the usual five-miler with them before heading back to the gym to shower and scream.
Tomorrow, I highly doubt I'll forget the NipEaze.

8 km Embraced the Suck.
Was a beautiful evening temperature wise 17.2 C / 39% humidity. Maybe even a little warm.
Wind out of the south at 21 kph so that was a struggle when it was full in your face for 2 km.
Just one of those runs where it should have been great but just didn't come together.
Didn't feel tired, hydration good, shoes, socks, shirt, shorts all felt fine.
Tomorrow is another day, flip the page and keep on keeping on.
Strange it was -2C this morning, I had frost on the windshield of my truck, roof of my garage and I was sure my garden would be done. Only the cucumbers and some of the Roma Tomatoes leaves are frozen, every else is fine.
Cherry & Beef Steak Tomatoes, potatoes, beets, carrots, peas, onions and garlic are all fine.9 -

I rolled my eyes at a guy wearing his shirt dangling from his neck like a cape today, but maybe he just forgot the NipEaze. That or he was showing off his eight-pack.7 -

@Avidkeo i have a spare garmin you can have. Its the 620. I have the charger, an hrm that should pair with it, but probably needs a battery and its not the fancy Run strap with all the wonderful metrics.
PM me your address if you want it at least until you find something, then you can donate it off. It did occasionally power cycle on me stopping a run, but never lost data.

After spending most of the day with my wonderful mom and dad at the park at Cherokee Lake Dam, celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary, I came home and walked a mile. I was able to take my dog with us to the lake, so got in quite a bit of walking with her there, but not counting that as it was pretty slow, allowing her to stop and sniff all of the interesting smells.

September Running Totals (miles)
9/1 – rest day
9/2 – 15.80 warmup + Oak Tree Half
9/3 – rest day
9/4 – 7.23 warmup + XC workout
September running total to date – 23.03
Nominal September mileage goal: 165 miles
Real Goals: Run Oak Tree well, winning my age group and finishing healthy. Build base/train toward Wineglass, running PG XC #1 so as not to be injured, and running the USATF Masters XC Championship so as not to be injured. Run Wineglass easy, finishing healthy for a good recovery in October.
Today's notes – Rest day yesterday, made easier because it was still sucky summer heat and humidity. The sucky heat and humidity continued today, but it was time to go back to club practice anyway. By evening it wasn't terribly hot; 84º F (29º C), but it was humid like the warmup for Oak Tree had been on Sunday.
The assigned workout was 3 x (interval pace up the grassy hill, easy jog down the road, stride across the flat grassy field, easy jog back to the base of the grassy hill), 3 minutes recovery, 20 minutes at threshold, 4 minutes recovery, 3 x hill repeats. Because I had just run a hilly half marathon on Saturday, I toned that down. Intended to run up the hill at threshold, run the grassy field at threshold, and do everything else easy.
Well, on the first time up the hill I found a string of runners slowing down more than I thought the hill deserved. I automatically channeled the experience of the IEXC series running this hill, and passed a bunch of them. That took me away from the friend I'd started running with, because he needed to run the entire route easy. Ended up running the hill at interval effort all three times, and the grassy field some at threshhold, some at interval.
Then I just ran easy, intending for 23 minutes. Found some new-to-me trails that weren't part of the IEXC course, some intentionally and some by accident. Got back to the base of the hill about 20 minutes, and just ran the last 3 x hill repeats with the grassy field at interval effort.
Skipped the 2 mile cool down in favor of a walking cool down and not running quite so many miles. Felt good, and of course I'm second guessing myself about whether I should have worked a bit harder. But the numbers say this was about how much mileage I should run today, and the hills should help prepare me for cross country season. Okay, cross country is lower priority than Wineglass Marathon; but I'm going to be running all those XC races, so I may as well do something to prepare for them.
It's supposed to be more summer weather tomorrow. I hope we get autumn weather by the end of the month.
