Hello Friends! I've popped over here from the old Less Alcohol thread that I joined back in January. Happy to see old friends and new
I'm AF since the first week of January, and I could not be happier! I've learned so much about myself along the way, and have improved so many areas of my life. I don't envision myself ever going back to drinking any alcohol. My family is completely supportive of me, which is tremendously helpful.
I've been on a journey the past 4 months of getting ready to run a marathon. This is something I have aspired to for years, but never made it much beyond a long run of 15 miles without injury or missing scheduled run days because I wasn't feeling up to it.
Today, I completed a 20 mile training run, and a total of 40 miles overall mileage for the week. I could not have done this if I was still drinking any alcohol. I eat a lot better these days! I eat good quality and quantity of food because I'm not expending any on drinking wine. My diet supports my training goals, and my diet is in check because I don't drink. I feel like, at 55 years old, I have finally figured out how to truly live healthy and happy.

I quit after decades of drinking, cold turkey March 1 2016. Did not even have a ripple of an issue after drinking a few glasses of wine nightly for years!!. I was a heavy hard stuff drinker years earlier thru my 30s and 40s, so I was worried I would have problems stopping. Nope, just stopped that night and never looked back. It really surprised me how easy it was...in retrospect, I guess I'm very lucky.8

I start my new teaching job tomorrow and am SO nervous. The nerves hit me unexpectedly. I’ve been away from the classroom for 19 years, longer than my new students have been alive. A glass of wine would help the nerves but the many, many downsides are just not worth it.7 -

Some ideas and tips: Humor is always good. A joke, a cartoon , etc. Music is also a motivator. Give them A get to know you inventory. You can also find a learning styles inventory quiz they can take so you can get to know their style. You will do great! How old are your students? Adults or juveniles?1 -
Thanks, @RubyRed427. They are incarcerated juveniles. There are things like having to remove the little metal ends from pencils. I believe it will be very rewarding but challenging and I’m sure heartbreaking at times.6

OMG, you guys. My new students have so much potential and so much desire to do well. And my fellow teachers and even the corrections officers who are in each classroom clearly care about these kids. I am so blessed to have landed in this place. Not drinking and having extra energy is icing on the cake. Going to bed early with Pellegrino and gratitude.11

The strangest thing happened tonight. So, I went to my AA book club. And when I sat down, there was a person I knew. She was a “regular” at the bars in my town, so I saw her regularly because I was a “regular” too! We were a little bit stunned to see each other. She said she quit in April. I told her I quit in July. She said she still goes to some of the bars but everyone knows she only drinks soda. I told her that I’ve replaced the bars with exercise and green juice smoothies.
The irony of two “regulars” meeting not at a bar but an AA book club was such a surprise.

@fdhunt1 a lot of us watch his videos. His no nonsense straightforward approach really resonates with me. I have not tried the program though.2

This will be my day 3. While I haven't completely gone AF (please don't be rude) I have drastically cut back. The last two nights, I've had only 2 drinks. Both were right when I got home after work, and then I ate dinner and switched to hot tea. I think I will do this for a week, then move to every other day, then eventually go all the way AF for at least 30 days. While this may not be impressive to any of you, it's an accomplishment for me.7

Sister Sue, no one here judges anyone else. We are all supportive. Good for you on cutting back. Remember, baby steps still move you forward.

@RubyRed427 I was the one who mentioned “what do you call an alcoholic who doesn’t go to meetings A Drunk” that’s what my daughter said to me over 10 years ago as I was beginning to go AF and she had been in meetings for 10 years back then fortunately it’s now over 10 years AF for me and no meetings and 20 years for her AF with meetings
So it’s an individual choice and we have to pick the best course for ourselves5 -

@mhaenzi Happy to have you here@kcn2bluesky Nice to see you guys @fdhunt1 Craig Beck is very instructive & a direct, no-nonsense type of guy. I watched his videos every day for over at least a month along with some Alcohol Mastery & Annie Grace's videos when I first stopped drinking. I also recently completed Annie Grace 30-day alcohol challenge. It's free & if you are looking for a program, that is what I would recommend. There is also a lot of support from others doing the challenge along with you. @donimfp SO happy for you. @Ke22yB Yes, whatever works, it's not a one-size fits all. Individual stories & individual journeys.

That’s right. I knew I heard it somewhere.
I dont know if the meetings are for me. I may be like you and handle life without them. I’m still in early stages so for now, I will keep going. I do know that some days I dont call my sponsor; It never occurs to me. So, I’m either not in the habit yet, or it’s not meaningful to me. I’ll see how the next few months play out.4 -
Love reading everyone’s posts. @RubyRed427, how crazy to meet up like that.
I am SO exhausted after another day on my feet and crazy wonderful experiences like reading a seriously beautifully written essay by a kid in for attempted murder. I’m totally blessed in this job. Teachers, administrators, and even guards exude compassionate care and discipline. The “kids” are getting a very good education and every chance for redemption. Statistics are gloomy but I can’t control that. A drinking me would not have the stamina.
I may not contribute much here as I’ve done since January but will certainly check in for inspiration. Can’t take my phone into work ! Thanks to all you fellow sober squad pilgrims.6
