Speaking as a cancer survivor, my handy rule of thumb is this: Nothing cures cancer, at least not most types of it.
I have had . . . hmmm . . . 5 or 6 oncologists by now, and heard numerous others speak at events. "Cure" is not a word oncologists generally use (maybe in contexts like "hope one day we may have a cure").
"Remission" "removed tumors" "no evidence of disease (NED)" "risk returned to general population level" . . . sure. "Cure"? Not so much.
So, anyone says something "cures" cancer, I figure they're not an oncologist, and ignore 'em.
I don't really think of them as medical, but the stupidest thing I've ever heard a pseudo-medical person (chiropractor) say was something along the lines that we'd all be better off if we gave up all dairy, sugar, and gluten . . . and artificial sweeteners are just as bad as sugar because they trick our body (into releasing insulin or something, I forget); but honey is OK, because it's a superfood; and agave isn't a superfood, but it's OK because it at least is a whole food. There was more, equally dumb.
And you know who he told this bull-whatsis to? A breast cancer support group. SMH.
First, congratulations on surviving that *kitten*. Second, I truly think I would have stood up and walked out of that meeting. Then, went and had a big ole full-fat gluteny sugar cone bowl of ice cream topped with caramel made with artificial sweetener.14 -

Ironically, cookies were served at the meeting, alongside the nonsense. From what I could see, most meeting participants partook freely of both. Chiro-boy seemed to be making a favorable impression. (He was young and sleazy-charming, which probably helped.)
He was clearly drumming up business. He described a dietary intervention his practice focuses on, but only in vague terms; when someone asked a question that would yield an actionable answer, he'd suggest they write it on their question form with their contact information, and he'd get back to them. Low. Slime-ball low.
I stayed and kept my mouth shut, but feedback to the support group coordinator is on my to-do list. She's a nurse. The sponsoring cancer center has a oncology-specialized registered dietician. It was inexcusable.20 -
"You don't have to count calories if you eat clean! You'll lose weight natural!"
I stupidly believed this. And guess what.... I gained weight. Funny how that happens.28 -
As a cancer survivor myself, I'm very discouraged when I see people who believe in "cures". I know someone who has had brain cancer twice, and she is now so against big pharma that if she gets it again, she is only going to smoke pot or use CBD oil this time. She is convinced that's all she needs to be cured.16

CBD oil in all it's forms seems to be the big thing right now when it comes to cures. The claims are just jaw-dropping and unfortunately sweep up vulnerable people like your friend. It's dispicable. And I'm saying this as a person who uses a CBD cream for mild athritis in my hands. It has it's uses, but claiming it's a cure for anything is predatory, in my opinion.

I have a friend who recently tried to treat his throat cancer with marijuana instead of chemo. Thank goodness people talked him into the actual medical route before it was too late. As of now, anyway.6 -
Bump. I love diet woo threads. Especially when it comes to keto.
Oh no I didn't.17 -
This woman is disgusting, worse than the fact that she took heaps of money from people is that people believed her BS and stopped medically prescribed treatment and started eating her recommended diet.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-09-28/disgraced-wellness-blogger-belle-gibson-fined/8995500
She did an interview on 60 mins here and still never admitted that she never had a brain tumour or that she is a giant liar.
If people want to peddle kooky stuff that is expensive but harmless, that's one thing but if it actually causes harm that is something else altogether.
It should be a lesson for everyone, what these people are like but vulnerable people will believe anything.13 -

Can you get the name of that particular brand of alcohol for me? I am asking for a friend...35 -

I read the article. What I find most disturbing is that the fines she had to pay were because of how she handled the money she received, not because she was lying *kitten*.6 -

I would be interested in seeing how she worded her claims. Legally, "misleading" is a minor offense as opposed to dispensing medical advice without a license, and the article doesn't go into the wording of her claims. If she told people outright that following her advice would cure their cancer, that would be dispensing medical advice, however if she documented her own "cure", posted her diet and supplements and sold her book as a documentary of her own journey, that would fall under "misleading" and might be harder to prosecute as criminal. My opinion anyway.2 -

Oh, MFP blog is the worst, along with the type of advertising a site like this attracts. It's a shame that they run everything indiscriminately in the feed on the home page without making it more obvious that this garbage is paid advertising rather than recommendations from MFP itself, which is actually mostly limited to calorie and macro information.13 -

Speaking a fellow survivor. Along this line - nothing "causes" cancer, at least most types...other than living a long life.

Hypothyroid causes obesity.
Not stopping a multitude of scam artists and charlatans will exploit victims with "The Thyroid Diet" and other such nonsense...several with letters behind their name.10 -
Thank goodness I haven't seen any crazy keto folks in the groups I'm in.
I do see the conspiracy theorists sometimes though. About Big Pharma this and evil money sucking demons that. But those folks are in every group.7 -
I just had a conversation with a coworker that went something like this:
Me: I am going to order from the Sandwich Shack. Are you interested?
Her: No, I am doing my weekly toxin cleanse today.
Me: Your what?
Her: Toxin cleanse - to flush out all of the toxins attached to my organs. It's the only thing that helps me lose weight.
Me: You know that your liver and kidneys flush out toxins and if they don't you have serious medical issues, right?
Her: I'm talking about the toxins that are attached to the organs, not the ones in my organs.
Me: Ooookaaaay. Well, good luck with that.
By the way, my shredded chicken, bacon and avocado salad from the Sandwich Shack was delish.39 -
Clickbait authors are getting sneakier. I saw an article in my newsfeed yesterday that was titled "Your Liver is the Only Detox Tool You Need!" I was highly suspicious so I opened the article - yup, subtitle "Here's how to help your liver stay healthy!" Followed by the usual woo.15
