What's a Paczki? Or do I want to know? Will telling me make me crave something naughty for me?

Nope. I'm not enough of a pancake fan to blow my calories. Now, my housemate makes these lovely pancake balls, a Danish recipe, called Aberschur (no doubt I have the wrong spelling), but I'm at my mum's house tomorrow, so can't have them. Clearly, I didn't think this plan through :grumble:

They are these delicious deep fried donuts with like 300-400 calories each. It's a 'traditional' pig out food the day before Lent begins.

A pączek is a deep-fried piece of dough shaped into a flattened sphere and filled with confiture or other sweet filling. Pączki are usually covered with powdered sugar, icing or bits of dried orange zest.

Although they look like bismarcks or jelly doughnuts, pączki (pronounced ponchki but mistakenly pronounced poonchki or punchki)are made from especially rich dough containing eggs, fats, sugar and sometimes milk. They feature a variety of fruit and creme fillings and can be glazed, or covered with granulated or powdered sugar. Prunes and rose-petal jam[citation needed] are traditional fillings, but many others are used as well, including lemon, strawberry, Bavarian cream, blueberry, custard, raspberry and apple.

Pączki have been known in Poland at least since the Middle Ages. Jędrzej Kitowicz has described that during the reign of August III, under the influence of French cooks who came to Poland, pączki dough was improved, so that pączki became lighter, spongier, and more resilient.
