What's on your mind today?

This is where you can share what's on your mind. Recipes, ideas, workouts, anything that you think might be helpful to others.
Maybe, you've tried something that has worked for you in the past and would like to share it with the group. Maybe, you have a NSV (Non Scale Victory) that you would like to share with the group. Anything that you feel comfortable sharing or anything that you feel comfortable asking the group with help....this is the place to come.
The GOOD!! What NSV did you have this week!!
The BAD!! So what....you ate the whole thing!!
The UGLY!! That darn scale went through the window this week....it deserved it too!!
So, what's on your mind today??

Its been busy in May at work so I've been skipping a lot of workouts and snacking a little extra.
Happy to say I mostly stuck to my routine so the scale stayed in the same place - 15lbs down and 15 more to go.
The next three months are light at work so I'm here and I'm losing those pounds!5 -
I am already thinking of strategies to be successful in the UAC June forum!
Specifically, I have committed to staying under my calories during a week of vacation. I have re-read other user's posts about how they managed their vacation calories in May & April.4 -
@Jays_Lines, here's to your success in June!!
@hansep0012, it's really doable and you feel so much better about yourself when you return and don't have to "undo" the damage. Hope you have a great time when you're on vacation!2 -
Thankyou Rick for hosting another month of the challenge.
This month has had its ups and downs but we all can rely on the constancy of the fellow dieters and fitness heroes or heroines on this app.
Thankyou to you all, you give so much encouragement.
Have a great day you deserve it !!!👏2 -
June is a couple of days away now.In anticipation I kind of get to thinking about my motivation. Why do I want this? Why should I care?
I guess I have to answer myself.
- Health -
That is a good reason. Some years ago I went to the doctor. I was having a cough but no symptoms of a cold or flu. That kind of inspired a fear in me. I had been a smoker and had that paranoia about the worst case of what happens in the lungs of smokers.
Doc says blood test. Blood test says hyperlipidemia. Google is putting a red line under that because he don't know how to spell it either.
But the simple analysis to that is there is fat in my blood.
Doc says that is a real problem. He says my coughing is my heart complaining about my diet.
Doc says if I don't take it serious, I don't have to bother saving for retirement.
So yeah, health that is a good reason.
Nothing wrong with wanting to live. That is what I say.
- Wanting to live -
There are questions that kind of surround that. Asking them and answering them can get kind of delicate. Life's motivations I kind of figure are fun and love.
- Fun -
I don't touch on fun first because it is more important than love. It is just easier to couple to diet somehow. Exercise is a big deal in diet. Well, the way I figure anyway. Maybe I should say lifestyle instead of diet. But when you say exercise, it just doesn't sound fun.
So I came up with exercise that is fun. I like going outside and being outside.
I like seeing the bright green new growth on the tips of conifer branches in the spring.
I like looking at tracks in the dirt and wondering who or what made them.
I like the sounds. I quit wearing them IPOD earbuds. I like music but I like listening to the creek. I like listening to the wind. I like listening for any birds or animals talking.
I like exercise. It gives me a capacity for fun. It gets my body used to moving. I get used to moving, I explore. When I explore I find fun. Maybe I will elaborate on that someday. That and love.

Last month was a huge success, only one pass day. I’m looking forward to another month!3

Only just got round to joining for June.
Did you ever feel like life was out to get you? 😂
May was a difficult month for me with a series of small setbacks. An old problem with my left knee (minor meniscus inflation) flared up really badly at the end of April, drastically reducing my physical activity for a few days. I am glad to say that has now improved, but I have had to reduce my daily steps.
A sinus/throat virus further incapacitated me at the beginning of May, and is still niggling 4 weeks later.
We had a walking holiday booked in Croatia form the 10 - 17 May. Neither of us were able to do the scheduled walks, but we pockled about at our own pace, and really enjoyed visiting Dubrovnik and a couple of the larger southern islands. Unfortunately, I had a small tumble in the middle of the holiday, resulting in injuries to both my right wrist and elbow. Of course, the left knee also suffered. I'm a tough old cookie, but it is impacting what I want to do, and I am not the most patient person.
Then, on Tuesday this week I was out in the garden planting up my summer containers when I had another small tumble. No major damage, just a bruised tailbone and another crop of bruises on my elbow. You wouldn't believe how many simple tasks are almost impossible with a stiff elbow.
It doesn't help that apart from the virus, most of these problems were the result of my own foolish choices (over-exercising the knee), or inattention (both falls, I tripped because I wasn't fully paying attention to where I was walking).
Life has a way of reminding us of our human frailties. I'm a positive person, but such things can be very wearing. However, I may have been down, but I'm not out! There are small improvements daily, and I am a resourceful gal, so I'm working my way through it.
I'm thankful that none of the damage has been irreversible. It's just that it seems to take longer to recover the older I get.
NSV: Down, but not out!7 -
Missed making circle in May, but I am OK with that.
For a die hard perfectionist, this is a HUGE step forward. My world did not end. Nothing bad happened.
Only missed because on 4 days I did not exercise. My diet and habits are such that it had zero impact on my weight, health and fitness.
Hopefully this month will be at least one less.6 -
UAC is all about establishing healthy habits (which is all about building self-discipline). I ran across this excellent article about self discipline that is very appropriate for anyone on a weight loss journey as well as being more broadly applicable.

Great article! thanks for posting.
"Having self-discipline isn’t just about consistently doing something, it’s instead about systematically regulating, correcting, and adapting your behavior to the changing conditions and circumstances of your life."

@TerriRichardson112 oh no! Hope you make a full recovery soon. Well done for keeping on keeping on!2
-
@craigo3154 no offence meant here but during your time on the UAC you have been super human and for a non-super-human I have been inspired by you but felt I could never match your high standards. I'm sure you will never/rarely miss the winner's circle again but it was a humble reminder to the rest of us that you are human too. Your honesty is inspiring too. Wishing you a wonderful June!

@bocasdelcrazygrandpa bob is back! Hooray! Please write a book one day!2

I’m not sure why I didn’t qualify for the May winners circle. I had only one pass day. I also checked in everyday. Did I do something wrong?1
-
@Alexbuzzcut, usually @RangerRickL posts the contenders that have mentioned they have made it all month with three or fewer pass days and then asks if there is anyone else that made it. I am sure it was not intentional, or you doing anything wrong. I believe Rick may still be out of town with the wedding and will respond as soon as he's able. Congratulations on making it all month! That's commendable!!1

@Alexbuzzcut. As @BonnieHosk85. mentioned, you need to nominate in the last couple days of the month whether you make circle. Rick calls for nominations in the last few days of the month in the opening post and reads to see who responds if they are in or out.
UAC is an honor system, so you need to track and report yourself if you make it. Part of the daily checkin.
This system usually works well as long term weight and health management relies on being honest with yourself (even when you don't want to be).3 -
Random though for the day.
I've been in maintenance for over a year. My weight and fitness have remained roughly consistent (which I class as a huge success). I plan to be on maintenance for the rest of my life. Fortunately I made maintenance for me mostly automatic.
At times I notice myself slipping out of healthy habits and I adjust to get them back (usually by forgiving the past and just working on making tomorrow more in line with what I know it should be).
How do others see their long term health/weight management plan/strategy?
How do you get yourself back on track when you are straying from the path you set for yourself?2 -
Only in maintenance for 4 months. So not enough hx yet. My sense, though, is I will continue tracking food (exercise is never an issue) daily indefinitely. I have relaxed a bit. I have set a daily calorie allowance based on TDEE and now ignore exercise calories. Right now I still weigh daily, but can foresee a time soon where that will reduce to once or twice a month. Maintenance is starting to become more "automatic", but not quite there yet.3

My initial weight loss was 40-45 pounds in 2011 with the help of tracking and logging calories with caloriecount.com which site transitioned all of its customer base in early 2017 to an affiliate site without the benefit of the calorie counting and nutrition tools previously available to users. I was very disappointed given I had spent an inordinate amount of time personalizing recipes, data, etc. to my individual needs. By August 2017, I had regained 8 pounds, although I was still within a healthy BMI...so I started logging with MFP in September 2017 commencing, once again, to enter recipes/ingredients to personalize MFP for my needs. I started with UAC in December 2017 and was back on track and at goal weight, again, in early 2018. I have, effectively, been at a healthy BMI since 2011 BUT... I do know that without consistently logging calories, tracking weight and exercise I would not be able to sustain goal for any length of time. Intuitive eating is definitely NOT an option for me. I allow myself +/- 2 to 3 pounds from goal before taking any decisive action to stay on target. I still weigh, regularly, using the scale simply as a tool for spotting a needed correction.4

I have developed healthy habits that are not only engrained but make for a lifestyle I enjoy. Not that I never get off track, I do occasionally when life gets too busy or too stressful. I regain almost reliably in December. I keep trying to pull back from the extreme way I’ve prepped for Christmas but my family loves it, and I usually have to give up most gym time to get it all done. Add in all the unusual treats that we keep in the house that time of year and how dark it is outside, and you have a recipe for weight gain. Luckily I am happy to get back on track when the load lightens.
Maybe my advice then is to set things up in a way that gives you joy instead of feeling like a chore.
I had unusual stress this fall/winter that played a large part in an unusual regain (15 lbs). I hope I never experience a time like that again. But I’ve been thinking that maybe I could have done better. Still thinking through strategies to deal with extended periods where life feels overwhelming.3 -
@craigo3154 I would imagine that all who make it to maintenance will want to "be there for the rest of their lives".
To me maintenance is simply knowing what your limits are in terms of exercise and calories. Congrats on knowing yours! For me, now I prelog I tell myself what I can have today and what exercise to do. When I get to maintenance I will not prelog but will at times back track just to see where I am at in calories and weight. I will however, never let myself become fitness stagnant again. It wasn't intentional but with 3 active kids and husband it was hard to put myself first at the time. I have now resigned as water boy and am taking back my team captain position.5 -
Love how people are now being more pro-active at maintaining their health.
For most of us, our "automatic pilot" was broken and we were steering ourselves into dangerous waters.
For me it took a full reset of my "auto-pilot" to get me on track. My food preferences needed a change. My regular eating times needed a change. My default activity level needed a change. My response to stress needed to change. Now my "auto-pilot" is now steering me where I want to go (and I check regularly if it needs adjustment).
For a change in perspective. Take a look at those around you: friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances. What do they do on "auto-pilot"? What do they eat when given a choice? How much do they eat? When do they eat? What activity do they do? How do they cope with adversity, increased work loads, troubles, ect...? What's their "auto-pilot" setting.
It's what you do when you DON'T think about it that really shapes who you are. This is your "auto-pilot".
In the "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" the 7th habit is "Sharpen the Saw" (A sharp saw cuts more effectively). This means take time to review what you do and how you have been going. Also gives time and focus to perform the maintenance required to do what you want more effectively. (Ever been too busy driving to stop for gas? {right before you ran out} ).
How often do you "Sharpen the Saw"? (This is akin to monitoring and adjusting your auto-pilot.)4 -
I hope I have not disqualified myself for not posting, but if I have, I understand. As life would have it, everything that needed to be done during my "summer break" (which was one month because I am taking a summer class) everything could not get scheduled until the very last week before classes - which is this week. I just woke up with that shocked feeling of "oh no" because I remembered I wasn't posting in UAC. I have been tracking but forgot to post.
Is there a rule on posting? I am sure there has to be or some people would wait until the last minute to post a month's worth of info.0 -
@craigo3154 I resonate with your post regarding getting back on track after straying from the path I've set; this scenario is exactly how the month of June started for me. Upon reflection I am pleased that I am taking a mental and physical shrug and stepping up to make today count.2

I’m still fairly new to the group so I can’t say definitively, but the write-up says “This challenge is open to anyone until the 7th of the month”.

@KCJen. No rule for not posting. As long as you have been tracking all is good.
Would love to hear from you in the daily's. So please post daily (if you can or remember to).
UAC is an honor system. Sometimes people cannot post, or forget to post. Life happens. The daily posts are there to help give a method of transparency to the accountability.0 -

@goldthistime. The reason why up to the 7th is to ensure that people are tracking and interacting to be eligible for circle recognition.
UAC is a remote community that can only survive by honest interaction. We welcome those that start after the 7th, just they are not eligible for circle recognition.
The best time to start working on creating a good habit is always now. No matter what day of the month it is.1 -
Getting a little tired of MFP having technical issues so often. Hope you all have a good day2
