There are 120 people in my class (it's a small class this semester).
Guess how many showed up to today's lecture!!!
Bonus question: Guess what the two most popular last names are.
(I looked when I was checking how many people are in the class and noticed that there are two common names tied with 4 people each ... well, one is very common and one is slightly less so.)
M in Oz
OK, two of you have guessed half or no more than half, and you're right. Less than half. So now you all have got only 59 numbers to choose from!!
And I was there to count and can confirm there were more than 1.
Barbie and Kelly, you're heading the right direction with the names ... definitely not Australian! Or perhaps it's the new Australia.
Machka in Oz
All right ... the answer to the little game ...
Out of 120 possible students, the highest number in the room was 8.
There were only 2 to start with, 6 more came in after about 10 minutes, and then after the mid-lecture break, 3 left.
And the two most popular names in class are Chen and Guo.
Chen is 5th on the list of popular Chinese surnames, and Guo is 16th.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_Chinese_surnames
The majority of students in my class are Asian and most are Chinese. It's an interesting experience going to university!!

Carol 2000 turkeys! Sorry to hear the BnL has to be sedated to recuperate from heart surgery, prayers continue. Thank you for sharing the progress your other BnL has made in memory care. That is encouraging news. re: Decorating, have neither the $$ nor the talent to tackle the much needed reno of our 1980's doublewide. So there it sits with yellow bathroom fixtures, original "wall paper" and our thrift store furniture. Good thing I love the views.
Heather "Not happy holiday" Max and your DH are so very creative!
Lisa Gym and Mowing and Pruning! WOW. Your arboretum sounds well varied and beautiful.
Kay many thanks. Agree about the frozen banana base for the ice cream texture, also sweetness. Will make up your mint chip recipe to substitute when next I've the "gotta have ice cream"-ies.
pip "...after we retire and move to california"??? Love the pooch pic, is that Kirby with a downturned smile?
Rebecca, love your food budget game. I do the estimates too, but haven't been so good at weekly limits...or pantry/freezer purge. Time to get back on the wagon! Athena rose
Michele thanks for the silken tofu hint... I might even sneak some whey powder into Kay's mint chip recipe to boost the protein.
Cheri "dieting for one week" true that! Laughing and crying at same time.
Kim Belated happy birthday wishes, let this be the best year ever!
Machka which course are you taking from the Maritime college of Science and Engineering? Rockmelon? Ah, cantaloupe $120/hour? For that you could have both Tracey AND me!!!
Janet 103? Yikes indeed.
NYKaren Sierra DOES look pleased with herself. Tumble is ecstatic. Vicki sure hope the treatment plan is drops and that they are immediately effective.
Yvonne, Would he pay for a Hello Fresh subscription? Why wait til you get rid of stuff? Phil might be relieved that an every other week housekeeper would relieve him of tasks he really doesn't want and keep you happy to boot.
Amber you are really tempting me to look into an air fryer. Those chicken bites look crispy and delicious!
Katla glad to hear surgery is a possibility, sorry he has to wait more than a week for consultation then for an unknown time til surgery is scheduled. Understand about the alcohol, people self medicate with it for pain because it WORKS... at least for awhile...:{ But seems like the primary at least should be willing to rx something less worrisome.
Rori thank you so much for sharing the pic with Meg. Two courageous, strong, loving, SMILING beauties!
Connie prayers that the surgeon has hopeful strategy.
Kelly (and Rita) we don't shop together for that very same reasons, bad for both budget and healthy eating plan. Joe spends his $$ however he wishes, I manage the household budget, and try not to eat many of the "goodies" he brings home. Failed yesterday with the nutty buddies.
Kelly if there were cocktails at Fred Meyers, I could be in real trouble, alcohol is not good for my self-control ;} So sorry to hear about Trentin's breakdown. Wish his mom had at least texted you at some point Friday, tho'. :P. Sending brilliant vibes to Tim to figure out how to do something to contribute the needed $6K and more. Carol is right on about your teaching gifts. Are there any private pre-schools that would pay you the big bucks with benefits?
Beth new facility is trying to deny you entrance to visit your son? Surely not?!? "green bananas"
Heather, the much-vaunted US customer service got outsourced to maximize profit. Oops, hope that wasn't too political.
Terri Mods and bikers, Montagues and Capulets?
Rita sorry you're in a funk. Us too, not $$ woes, but saying goodbye to Scooter. We're both trying hard to be kind to each other but we're both snappish and admit to being in bad moods. This is just a hard hard time.
Welcome catbid23
Forcing myself to go to line dancing class. Will skip T'ai Chi tomorrow to spend last hours with Scooter.
Hurting.

took me 3 years to leave a bad relationship. my thoughts and prayers are with her. I stayed on a friends couch, no place to go in the beginning. she will live through this. hugs4 -
Hi Gals,
Heather – the England you describe I would trade for the America I live in from the standpoint of customer service, bus service and health care… BUT we are a huge country compared to England and there are places with a different set of issues.
Rita – hang in there! Money troubles are the worst!
Carol – sending good thoughts to you and BIL
Remodeling/redecorating can be hard, if you were up for it… I bet a local junior college or university with a design/interior decorating department would let a student help you for school credit.
Debby – sending all the good thoughts her way! I’m a domestic violence survivor too, and my house is a safe house in our area, it doesn’t get used much as most women have kids but I have had a few women without kids and a few teens, running from abuse in their parents homes. Most areas have an organization that will help women in that situation.
Kelly – sending good thoughts to Trentin and family – hoping for meds issues
Rori – white is a nice default, but if you are going nature what about light sky blue or a warm very light tan?
It’s over 100 here and will be tomorrow and Thursday and we are in a heat advisory; I stayed home today and embroidered a bunch, will do the same tomorrow – then Thursday I’ll go to the garden about 6am and work till 9 or 10 that will be the cooler time. Friday is supposed to be cooler.
I have always been interested in Genealogy but never had the time and/or the money for the monthly services. As a young person I did a lot of talking to relatives and made paper family trees that were hundreds of pieces of paper taped together. Mom was telling stories when she was here last week and I know she will not be here forever, so it made me want to gather the stories up! I have a friend who is very active in the local genealogy group, I reached out and there is a free program offered from the Mormon Church, I decided to try to do 2-3 hours a week to get things over to that program, it ties you with other trees if there are overlapping relations, I think this will be interesting and exciting.

Given that most personal organisers charge about $120/hour, if one worked 35 hours a week, that would be $4200/week or $8400. I could probably fly you here and put you up in a hotel for about $4000 ....
Your offer is generous!

Having just gone through it... you have my complete sympathies. I likened it to the taste of slightly "off" oyster juice. It did not help my feelings at all to be able to name it.
Debbie in VA - many good thoughts winging your and your daughter's way for a safe and happy ending to her departure. It is frantically worrisome for a parent, and terrifying for the person trying to leave safely.
Good day today, successful meeting, and what may well be a quite successful partnership developed with the local university to apply for a federal grant. Then warned that I will be changing supervisors quite soon and that I have to be in Little Rock unexpectedly on Thursday. Not thrilled about the change, but resigned. Somewhat.
Love y'all,

Kim - I don’t know if you could ever say your job is boring. That’s more than I would want to do sewing with chickens period, never mind dead ones. The cleaning I could handle. My first paying job that involved taxes being taken off was cleaning a motel. There were some interesting finds in there as a 16 year old.
Lisa - that must be such a relief for you!
Heather - I have suffered from depression in my life too. Yeah understand exactly what you mean about being thankful for every day. Thank you for explaining the TV license to me. We have high fees here in Canada for cable too.
On page 44 - catch up more later3 -
Lunch today with our troubling "friends" went well. I changed the subject a few times when they ventured into rocky territory and left feeling that we had done well. Also ate sensibly.
Debby, sending thoughts of safety to you and your daughter at this troubling time. Her courage is admirable.
We spend a lot for TV service but TV is a major source of entertainment for us. We don't travel or go to concerts or movies or live theatre.
We just made an appointment to update our wills--something we've been wanting to do for much too long.

Walked on the stairstepper today. The plan for tomorrow is to do Amy Dixon’s Give me 10 DVD since there’s a speaker at a Newcomer meeting that I’d like to go to.
After exercise, went to the post office to mail some packages since yesterday they were without power. Then stopped to see if Big Lots had Vince’s bread which they didn’t then got money at the ATM. Home and made biscuits. I tell you, with Jess here and now Colby, we’re going thru a lot more food. Tonight I’ll take Jess (and Colby if he’s here) out to dinner.
Kim – out of curiosity, what do you do with the chickens that have died? Bury them? Can you?
We don’t have Netflix (really, don’t have the time to use it to make it worth it) and the kids aren’t happy – especially Denise. Jess doesn’t seem to mind, she usually plays her game on the computer anyway.
I usually do the food shopping but one time when the kids were little Vince took them. When they got to things like “fruit roll ups” Denise said “oh, daddy, we need those” “does mommy buy them” “oh yes”. The truth of the matter was that I would only buy them if they were on a real good sale and I had a coupon. But the kids wanted them so daddy thought he was doing the right thing!
KJ – I’ve found that sometimes when something is on sale with my coupon it’s actually cheaper than the store brand. That’s when we get name brand. Unless there’s something that only the name brand will do. Like Vince only likes Jif pb, to me it has to be Hellman’s mayo or nothing (absolutely no Duke’s), has to be Cheerios not the store brand, but store brand of frosted mini wheats is OK, things like that. You always have such neat things you do with the kiddos. Oh, poor Trentin, his mom, and you. I do hope it’s the meds.
For a while I was into cardio where I looked forward to it, then it was weights that I looked forward to, then cardio, now I’m in a weights mood where I look forward to that. But I still do that cardio
Beth – happy belated anniversary
I love grocery shopping – comparing foods, nutritional content, price. But not with Vince. He wants to go in the store, pick up what he needs, and get out. Not me….
One time I ordered things from WalMart pick up. I didn’t realize there was a place where I could mark that substitutions were acceptable and they substituted buttermilk pancake instead of regular. I didn’t know it, but Vince actually prefers the buttermilk so we kept that. Another thing was I wanted the smaller bottle of alcohol but they sent us the larger one. When I called to tell them, do you know that they gave it to me for free! Not like I couldn’t use the larger bottle, I’d just prefer the smaller one since I don’t use it that much
JR – LOL hubby app. I most time will give Vince the wrapper from what it is I want.
Margaret – I THINK we have a wool carpet in our living room and one in the kitchen. Does wool “pill” and you have to vacuum it frequently?
Margaret – beautiful paintings
Barbara – one of the food stores around here has these cup holders on the carts for your beer. Yes, they sell cups of beer that you can drink while you’re shopping!
Debbie in VA – (((HUGS)))
Karen – when I get my colonoscopy, that’s the ONLY time I ever drink Gatorade. Now I think you need to use this prep stuff that the doc orders. Why we can’t just use the Miralax stuff is beyond me. It was OK before, what changed?

I can't keep up with you ladies!! I am so many pages behind it is ridiculous! I do want to say that you are all very lovely people, and I enjoy reading your entries.
Barbara I am so saddened for you with Scooter. My dogs are a large part of my life and happiness. I know what you are going through and it is horrible! I am saying extra prayers for you as I type this. Nothing prepares us to lose our dear fur babies.
I was trying to take notes to write to specific entries, but I have misplaced them now and at this hour (11:30 pm) my brain doesn't function well enough to remember what I had wanted to respond to. I know I have been enjoying everyone's pictures!
Pip Your bikini shot reminded me I didn't look that good at my skinniest in high school! Although I don't have any desire to try to get there again (my goal is 50 pounds heavier), it amazes me that you are in such terrific shape. Hoping your shoulder is much better. That break looked very painful!
I am fighting some physical issues brought on by stress and it is messing with my diet and sugar levels. What do I have to be stressed about at this point in my life?? Nothing really. I just was raised with issues that have never been fully worked through and I am still left with depression and anxiety that is difficult to control. Beyond that, I am daily grateful for my wonderful family, children and grandchildren and the beautiful little blessing due in December! Hoping to be able to get through my unkempt house before she is born so that it will be nice enough for a sweet baby to spend time with her Grandma and Grandpa.
Karen I, too, recently went through the colonoscopy drinking party...I feel for you! Icky, for sure! Enjoy the happy place you go to during the exam!
Debby So sorry your daughter and grandson are going through the awful time of getting away from an abuser. I have been there myself, and it is a terrifying and very difficult experience. I am sending prayers for all of you as you have a lot of emotions and extra physical demands during the process!
Thank you, All, for allowing me into your lives and having this great group! I had a brain injury 11 years ago, and reading/comprehension took the biggest toll, so as much as I enjoy trying to keep up, it is a lot slower and tougher than it used to be! Hope everyone has a lovely Wednesday! xoxo
