    Dietary carbohydrate restriction improves metabolic syndrome independent of weight loss

    RESULTS. Despite maintaining body mass, low-carbohydrate (LC) intake enhanced fat oxidation and was more effective in reversing MetS, especially high triglycerides, low HDL-C, and the small LDL subclass phenotype. Carbohydrate restriction also improved abnormal fatty acid composition, an emerging MetS feature. Despite containing 2.5 times more saturated fat than the high-carbohydrate diet, an LC diet decreased plasma total saturated fat and palmitoleate and increased arachidonate.

    Association of Serum Cholesterol Levels With Peripheral Nerve Damage in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

    Conclusions and Relevance The findings suggest that lowering serum cholesterol levels in patients with T2D and DPN is associated with a higher amount of nerve lesions and declining nerve conduction velocities and amplitudes. These findings may be relevant to emerging therapies that promote an aggressive lowering of serum cholesterol levels in patients with T2D.

    Overeating saturated fat promotes fatty liver and ceramides compared to polyunsaturated fat: a randomized trial

    Intervention
    Muffins high in either palm (SFA)- or sunflower oil (PUFA) were added to the habitual diet.

    Results
    By design, body weight gain was similar in SFA (2.31±1.38 kg) and PUFA (2.01±1.90 kg) groups, P=0.50. SFA markedly induced liver fat content (50% relative increase) along with liver enzymes and atherogenic serum lipids. In contrast, despite similar weight gain, PUFA did not increase liver fat or liver enzymes or cause any adverse effects on blood lipids.

    SFA had no differential effect on the accumulation of visceral fat, pancreas fat or total body fat compared with PUFA. SFA consistently increased, while PUFA reduced circulating ceramides; changes that were moderately associated with liver fat changes and proposed markers of hepatic lipogenesis.

    The adverse metabolic effects of SFA were reversed by calorie restriction.

    The incidence of many cancers, including pancreatic cancer, continuesto rise alongside the global obesity and T2D epidemics9. There isalsoincreasing popular interest in the role of dietand lifestyle in cancer risk and prevention strategies. Low carbohydrate diets have been proposed for prevention or as an adjunct to cancer therapy based on evidence that many tumours selectively use glucose as fuel10or based on what has come to be known as the insulin-cancer hypothesis11,12.

    Insulin hasmitogenic and anti-apoptotic effects on pancreatic cell cultures in a dosage-dependent manner13and is known to activate signalling pathways implicated in tumourigenesis13,14. However,despite the abundance of clinical evidence of associationbetween insulin andvarious cancer types2-4,15, the insulin-cancer hypothesis has never been formally tested.

    Supercentenarians and the oldest-old are concentrated into regions with no birth certificates and short lifespans

    In the United States, supercentenarian status is predicted by the absence of vital registration. The state-specific introduction of birth certificates is associated with a 69-82% fall in the number of supercentenarian records. In Italy, which has more uniform vital registration, remarkable longevity is instead predicted by low per capita incomes and a short life expectancy.

    Finally, the designated ‘blue zones’ of Sardinia, Okinawa, and Ikaria corresponded to regions with low incomes, low literacy, high crime rate and short life expectancy relative to their national average. As such, relative poverty and short lifespan constitute unexpected predictors of centenarian and supercentenarian status, and support a primary role of fraud and error in generating remarkable human age records.

    Follow up re the culled male chicks in the egg industry. Very happy to learn they're used in pet food and live chicks fed to zoo animals apparently.
    I hope they're at least used for feed or fertilizer since their death is deliberate - surely they must be? I tried to google to see what they do with the culled chicks but all of the results I saw were - understandably - focused on the process.

    According to Charles, stores are selling roughly 45 Impossible Whoppers per day. Once national advertising launches, Cowen predicts that figure will ramp up to 50 per store per day. Traditional beef Whopper sales have also increased since the Impossible Whopper launched.

    The Impossible Whopper is also apparently convincing customers to pay more. According to Cowen, checks with the plant-based burger tend to be $10 or more, compared to the average Burger King order of $7.36 in 2018.
