December can be a difficult month with shopping, eating, and family issues looming bigger than usual. It has helped me to navigate life's challenges with the help of supportive friends.
That's what this thread is about. The title says "Women Ages 50+" but all women are welcome.
Some of us set goals or resolutions for the month and others just take life one day at time and try to build and reinforce good habits. Please join us on this journey.
Don't forget to bookmark the thread so you can find it again.
Please sign your post with a name or nickname and a general geographic location so we can get to know each other better.

My word for 2019 is "pause"
The reason most people fail instead of succeed is that they trade what they want the MOST for what they want at the MOMENT.

Hi Gals,
Thanksgiving day worked out perfect! There were even more choices than I listed, and I very carefully had 2-6 tablespoons of all but 2 things – the 2 options I passed on were the green bean casserole and the 3rd bread choice. Then I had seconds of beet salad and another 4 mini ravioli. I had 2 skinny slices of the dessert, the pie I made and the peanut butter cheese cake.
Everything was good but it made me realize how I naturally think about how things go together, and this was a ton of great things with no flow or Palate break, just one intense flavor after another. I left full, but not over full, and feeling good.
Then Friday my mom and nephew went into the Santa Cruz mountains to a Christmas tree farm and cut down our Christmas trees one of the few traditions we do together. Home by 2 then off to feed chickens at camp, and found one chicken had died, so did the quick circle of life funeral. She was a very old chicken so it was just her time.
Then to a friends for a second friends dinner. This one could not have been any more different. The turkey was deep fat fried. Every dish was in gravy, or sauce and had some form of bread, and bacon. The host was proud of the 6 lbs of bacon in the dinner. I did the same tasting menu idea, but was very unsatisfied. There was not a “real” vegetable in site, the only veggie thing was salad, it was sorta Caesar but with more bacon, croutons, cheese and dressing than lettuce! I know that family struggles with weight and I totally know why now.
Today was back to eating my way and working on the embroidery ! I love to play, but also love my routine.
I did read everyone’s – hugs to all! And Thanks! I think this year my biggest single thing I am thankful for is you, each and everyone of you. The support the kindness knows no bounds. Thank you.

Happy December ladies!
Thank you Barbie for starting us off clean for another month.
Okie in the TX Hill Country7 -
Just got home. The plan for tomorrow is to ride the recumbent bike. Did HIIT almost every day (walked on the treadmill one day) and missed exercising one day because Vince wanted to leave early. Tried very hard to eat decently. Had eggs almost every day and granola with banana. OK, at one hotel you could only get egg and cheese omlets (the scrambled eggs tasted horrible). Had pork patties or a bit of bacon with them. Then usually had yogurt. Only had 2 pieces of cake and a SMALL piece of pumpkin pie. What surprised me the last day when I went to breakfast was how the bagels, English muffins, breads, etc. just didn’t appeal to me at all.
Going there was uneventful (guess it was saving it all up). The school is pretty impressive. In a way I feel bad for Jess, she only has a table with four chairs and her bed to sit on. But then again, I know she’s thinking that if she got a sofa or something like it, she’d only have to move it back when she’s thru. Did find out that she’ll be doing her clinical there.
While we were there went to Menard’s. WOW! Found these blowmold penguins that I fell in love with so we got 2. Bad part is that they’re like $50 each. Good part is that it’s less than the Snoopy blowmolds I also fell in love with. Oh well. I guess it’s a good thing we took Vince’s Outlook since they never would have fit in my car with all our other stuff.
Barbara – he wasn’t a root canal specialist. I didn’t even know that you needed one. Right after it was done, I found out he went to a school “to be a root canal specialist” and he hasn’t been back. Don’t even know his first name.
SuziQ – on our way home we stopped at a BK and I had to try one of their Impossible Burgers. Had one when we went out one night, but the bun was SOOO big. I did find out that BK puts all the stuff on it, so I asked for it without the mayo, ketchup or pickle. It wasn’t bad. Wouldn’t go out of my way for one, but I didn’t think it was bad.
Beth – yup, that’s what I’m saying. But honestly I can’t be 100% sure that it was the upper left, but I’m pretty sure it was.
Jess made mashed potatoes in the IP. They were so fluffy. I can’t wait to get mine. Of course, she doesn’t have roasting pans, etc so we just got a turkey breast with some sides at the local food store and heated it up at her place. But we were together. Of course, Denise wasn’t there but Jess’ bf was. He’s supposed to go back the 5th. It’s great that he can work remotely but in a sense to me it’s a bit rude having to spend all the day working. I know other people who work remotely and they don’t do it like 8 hours a day. But then again, he’s really just a technician. Sad to me, but he doesn’t have any college degree at all. He’s talking about “maybe if I find something out here (meaning Iowa)”. Jess confided to us that she really doesn’t want him there because she feels he’d be a distraction and she wants to devote herself to her studies. Plus, she feels he needs a lot of – not sure what I’d like to say – “hand holding”. To me, it wouldn’t look good on his resume. Since I’ve known him this is the third job he’s had. One he was a contractor for one and the contract ran out, one he quit. So what’s going to happen? I don’t know. He got the job because he works for a friend of his. Which to me means that he got the job more based on who rather than what he knows. But who am I???
Amber – happy belated birthday
Need to run to the store tomorrow to get things we need for dinners for next week. Should probably make something for Vince, but don’t know what
While we were away Hamrick’s called to say they got in a pair of shoes that I wanted. Honestly, I didn’t think they’d call but they did while we were away. I’ll pick them up Monday.
Still have the tickle in my throat so I’m coughing. If this doesn’t get better real soon, I’m going back to the MD. It’s just a real pain in the neck.
Oh, the oatmeal in every hotel was NASTY. Real watery. Why do they all make it so watery? The scrambled eggs were kept warm in water. Bleh!!
Vince does A LOT of decorating for Christmas. Just thinking about it all has me somewhat in a tizzy. Wish he’d get to it. Now you know why it took 6 years for me to get quarter round. Just hope it doesn’t take ANOTHER 6 for him to get the paint for me to cover up the nail holes.
About Christmas – I wonder if you can bread the fish beforehand and then just fry it that day? I may have to try it for us first
Welcome everyone new!
Can’t believe how much I have to catch up on. Will be skimming, so apologies for anything I’ve missed.
Pip – “dogs ain’t cheap”. Neither are cats – believe me!
A friend came and took care of the cats for us. We did call her and since we didn’t know what would happen, we asked her to come again tonight. We expected to be home but…….
Tina in CA – safe travels
Pip – there were all these bike racks around the school and Vince commented about how could people ride in the cold and rain. I couldn’t help thinking of you
Carol GA – love the pic
I’m thinking that I’d like to just give everyone 3 gifts, no more. Hope Vince is on board with this idea. He did all the driving to and from Iowa, so I know he’s mentally tired, especially driving in the rain at night.
Pip – (((big hug)))
Do you know that most of the hotels DON’T have the weather channel????? That really surprised me
Bad, bad eating day today. Really stressed sitting at the GM dealership. All they had was coffee (bleh) and hot chocolate. Guess what I stressed out on?
Rori – kewl about the study. Is CocoaVia part of it?

New month- Tree real or fake ? Hubby worried 😦 about JR y a real tree 🌲. Will see his decision soon enough other concern is Daughter coming so late don’t want a dead tree.
Hubby wants to fight the crowds get some stuff for JR y Groceries. I’m not going out the crowds are terrible this time of the year!
Still lots to do but not accomplishing my out the pictures on a flash drive or cleaning the bathroom as fast as I hoped. Got other stuff done tho. JR been playing outside a lot which means anything indoors can’t get done/ he’s into everything outside so nothing can get done there either. Oh well with time that will change every few months is a new milestone. Switching JRs diet up Oreos for Chocolate teddy grahams (more fiber) y chocolate chip teddy grahams bunch more flavors. Trying to introduce more new foods limit his baked Cheetos. Want to slowly get him used to the idea like school lunches you eat what you get.
Freash orange juice squeezed from my tree today. Finally it’s maturing so the oranges taste better sweeter than last year.
Same as last month y been trying to figure out menu for restaurants. So much to decide. The menus aren’t the same at all restaurants in the chains so looking for multiple choices in case.
My measurements are the same except my waist is down a few inches!!! Woohoo 🙌
Weights not showing all of it but measurements are from efforts all month long.
Watching Hamdmaids tale it’s really good nothing like the news portrayed it was written before Dems against reps y vice versa nonsense! It’s not against religion it’s more what if a radicalized cult took over went over board on their ideas 💡 some wanted to bail out but now they can’t. Women trapped no matter their social status . Environmental issues of wars, toxins,y female infertility on the rise due to issues unknown only guesses of why. The fight of ones soul as they would go any lengths to save their children 👶. I liked it. Males who want freedom for all against those who want it only for the elite. Struggles in it make you start off by thinking you know the villans...but you don’t. They dig deep into their past, middle,y now. You fall in love with some realize others are monsters. You see how abuse changes one for the better, worse,or in between as they all struggle to be free. The main character refuses to leave unless her children are all free (sounds like me wouldn’t leave a Abuser who kidnapped me trapping me in his cult religion without my Daughter no matter how many bones they broke you find strength no one could imagine the Mama Bear in us all! ),but she takes routes even she never thought she would as it goes on.

Rebecca- Hotel food when I worked at the breakfast bar as a fill in at big chain ones was all in bags they didn’t allow us to make from scratch (lawyer stuff). Small chain one yes fresher but depending on the one you get what they call breakfast ...cereal with donuts 🍩 or fresh real eggs y toast or breakfast tacos 🌮. Egg in a bag was egg substitute had to be warmed in water from a microwaved bowl of water (boiled). The oatmeal was in a bag you popped in a microwave it came out how it came out cook adds nothing! It’s what the manufacturer did.
Muffins taken out of freezer premade warmed in microwave with paper towel over. Even the bacons in a bag! The perks no chance of food poisoning less allergies for many people with less chance of waste. Bananas y fruit are real go so quick especially bananas!!! 3-10lbs in an hour!
Restaurants are getting to be the same most are premade by company the cook only adds garnishes y heats it up. More lawsuits for coffee with a lose lid the more things are not fresh.

Happy New month ladies!!! Thanks Barbie for being out fearless leader.💖
So this weeks yummy jar, my husband picked chocolate chip cookies, and son picked peanut brittle. I have my shopping list for stuff I don't have. This will pace the sweet things in the house, plus it was cute watching son pick from the wads of paper choices.👍

Happy December!!! I'm looking forward to the Annual Christmas Ships parade. Boaters from the Portland Metro area decorate their boats with elaborate light displays and parade throughout December in various locations. They're scheduled to be in our town on December 14. They rendezvous at the City Docks and get set up for the parade. When it starts getting dark, they line up on the river and start their parade. We plan to have friends over to enjoy the parade. We have a great view from our windows.

Think I have caught up, skimmed the last week or so of November though.
Can't believe it is December, where has the year gone. Like others who have been struggling at this time of year I have been a bit up and down emotionally. Hubby passed 5 years ago on 12th Nov, and it's coming up to his 65th birthday on 7th December. Makes me sad to think of all the plans we made for our retirement that we never got the chance to do.
The kitchen is almost finished, I had to have words with the electrician as he was taking too long. Over a week ago, he said he would come back the following week. It got to Wednesday and I hadn't heard anything so texted him. No response, so I called his mobile on Friday and left a message asking when he was coming. He texted back to say he'd come the following Monday if that was okay. I texted back saying no it wasn't okay I appreciated that he was busy, but he knew what needed doing when he quoted the job, had his other customer had to wait weeks like I had? Everything in the kitchen now is connected and working, but there is a socket in the dining room that he needs to reconnect , he's not sure why it has stopped working, but I can manage at the moment, it's not an inconvenience. I'll try and get some before and after pictures.
My sister in law gets the results of her biopsy next week. I'm praying that they have caught the cancer before it can spread, and that she'll be able to get some form of treatment.
I'd better make a start on the day, if I get chance I want to finish painting the dining room, had to stop because moved half the kitchen in there no excuse now.
Love to all
Viv from a cold and frosty York UK

SuziQ Grr for phone hell.
Betsy in NW WA, safe travels and hope that judge/mediator tells your brother and cousins some home truths.
Kim 6 lbs of bacon into one meal? Glug.
Michele SMH no Weather Channel in hotels. Crazy!
Katla would love to see a pic of the Christmas Ships parade...
Struggling here a bit with motivation, energy levels. Seems like the days are so short, the dark nights so long. Need pip's boot to get out into the light when I can.
Gratitudes Day
#17 Knowledge: learning how Joe's way of processing information is different from mine, how to communicate non-judgementally and effectively.#16 My body: well last night I would have been hard pressed to respond positively or gratefully to this challenge. Have been catching glimpses (shudder) in the mirror, in the morning at T'ai Chi and last night at line dancing. Received my Land's End order in the post, and the first shirt I tried on nearly made me cry. Look so fat! Tried on another and it wasn't quite as bad so wore it to line dancing. Will try on the rest later today and return the ones I really really won't wear. SO time for a flip. I AM grateful for my legs, how they are improving with BB&B, and how I can use them for quality time walking with Joe and the pooches. Like Heather said, grateful for my mobility. As for the rest, like Evelyn said, it's time to take better care of my body, starting with being grateful for it just as it is right now.Lighter, lovelies!
#15 Season: Summer. Used to be autumn, the colors, the smells. Winter too cold, Spring to drizzly. Summer here on the coast is perfect, only 3 days of 90+ degrees and so long as no wild fires, the air is clear.
#14 sight: my DH's lowered pressure numbers, his glaucoma has stabilized with no immediate need for surgery. Long may he see the ocean from our front room, the dogs playing together at the edge of the woods, the fog through the trees.
#13 abilities: touch typing
#12 texture: Tumble's double coat, long straight strong guard hairs undercoated with soft downy fur. Shadow's silky puppy ears.
#11 holiday: Christmas. The music, the lights, the scent of the Christmas tree, the story, the memories, the taste of egg nog, tom and jerry's, and oh yes... baking, smelling and eating the COOKIES!!!
#10 taste: today its fresh ice water. After too much wine it really tastes good.
#9 place: our property, all 15 vertical acres of it, woods, ferns, creeks, mud, brush, critters, peeks at the ocean and the way it smells when I get out of the car. “Home!”
#8 book: To Build a Land by Sally Watson. Read this children's novel when I was 9. It was about a group of Jewish orphans transported to Israel after WWII. Identifying with one of the characters sparked a life long interest in archeology, Hebrew and ultimatly spurred me to visit the holy land in 1980.
#7 memory: at holidays Papa told stories about his younger days, during Prohibition and the Depression (but never about WWII). I could repeat them almost word for word but enjoyed them every time. That's one thing I miss about not having family left for holiday get togethers.
# 6 nature: the forest's scent and the ocean's clamour
# 5 sound: Joe snoring
# 4 food: Fage Greek Yoghurt
# 3 color: blue skies after a gray rainy foggy couple of days.
# 2 tech: my Win 7 laptop. Dread migrating to something newer/supported.
# 1 smell: clean, bleached whites while transferring from washer to dryer.
Barbara, the Southern Oregon Coastie AHMOD
Word for 2019: "GOOD" good attitude, good food, good times, good choices, good enough, feel good, GOOD! Word for November: get up and do it EVERY day!

Welcome to returnees and newcomers.
And a thousand thanks to our leader, @barbiecat for keeping us going.
For those who may not know me:
I’m Terri from Northern Ireland, and I am working on improving my fitness and health. AKA ☘️ Terri
DH and I will celebrate our 54th wedding anniversary next July.
We have 2 daughters, 3 grandkids. And live in a town on the coast near Belfast.
I skimmed the rest of the November pages. Starting fresh for December. Apologies if I missed anything.
November Update:
Original Goal for 2019 was to reach 155lbs, achieved, and revised it down to <150lbs. Weight has been steadily trending downwards. I am now at my lowest weight in 4 decades! I have been bouncing around 150 for over a week now.
Just a few details on my personal journey to health and fitness.
Aim for 2019 ~ reach 155 <150
Aim for each month ~ Weigh less at the end than I did at the beginning ✅
This month, I am FOCUSED on Strength, and heathy food choices and DETERMINED to achieve my goals!
Age: 73; Height 5’2”; Female
SW: 227lbs (Mar 2014)
LW: 153 (Oct 2016)
151.6: 1 Nov 2019 (75 lbs Discarded:- not lost, not looking for them 😂 😂 😂)
149.8: 30 November 2019
UGW: 155 140s (this may change when I get there 😂 ) ✅ Hit 149s over a week ago.
CW: 149.8
Some background info:- For the last 3 years I have tended to bounce up and down between 160 - 170. Occasionally I bounced up/down a little more.
- My ideal situation would be to be below 155, to allow me some wiggle room for holidays/celebrations, hence my original goal for 2019, which I have now revised down a little.
- I use CI/CO and a variety exercise for extra calories.
- Logic would suggest that I have found a natural comfortable weight, and, according to modern BMI calculation, I am in the upper range of normal for my age and height. However, logic doesn't always dictate our desires and feelings. 😂
- Getting and staying healthy and fit requires the development of a permanent lifestyle reset.
- Replacing unhelpful habits with more useful ones is key to to the process.
- Losing weight is only one of the elements.
- Eating healthy and staying actively is not OPTIONAL, but an ABSOLUTE ESSENTIAL.
REMINDERS One or two thoughts on weight which might give heart to some of you.- Daily weight fluctuations are normal, and can be several lbs a day for no apparent reason.
- A general downward trend is what we are looking for.
- Eating out can cause apparent weight gain because of high sodium levels, but usually goes quickly. Drinking extra water helps with this.
- The human body does not react instantly to what we do to it. Sometimes it can take several days to see results.
- Plateaus are a normal part of the process. The body is consolidating and adapting to your new way of eating/exercising.
- The closer you get to your goal weight, the more difficult it becomes to lose weight, as your body becomes more efficient at using what you feed it.
- When you exercise you build muscle, which takes up less space than fat, so use measurements as well as weight to assess your progress.
- Getting/Staying fit and healthy requires a permanent lifestyle change for most people.
☘️ Terri

Thank you soooooo much, Barbie!
Barbara - Love your knowledge choice. I feel a bit like that some of the time.
For me I am grateful for my endless curiosity that has brought me knowledge about many, many different subjects. My most unusual area of knowledge must be the history of Israel and the Early Church. I have just finished yet another book on the subject. I read mostly non-fiction these days - a lot of medicine, genetics, anthropology, archaeology, history, biography. I love to dig around in science.
I had to make a decision this morning about whether to go to the Christmas Party for the Swing Dancing. After a lot of agonising I have decided not to go. It's complicated, but I'm glad I have settled on giving it a miss.
This afternoon I am going to clean the dining room and living room so I can make a start on Christmas decorations. Normally I would get DH to do his share, but I don't want to aggravate his back. I'm going to put some lights on the Christmas tree that's growing in our front garden and the new baubles that I bought when I was with my friend. If anyone steals them that's too bad. They weren't expensive. Last year I noticed that a lot of people had decorations on their outside tree. I hope I can remember where the lights are!

Barbie - thank you for making this place.
All - you are amazing and lovely people with hearts as big as Texas. I'm grateful that you're here. You're part of my life, and I smile, laugh and shed tears with your lives with my morning coffee. You ground me, lift me, and are incredibly supportive, and I couldn't be more thankful. I'm here, and like Pip and Cheri and a few others I know are there, I'll send up signs of life.
Love y'all,

Hello one and all.
Okie, Beth, Heather, Lanette, Karen, Terri, and Barbara – Thank you all for your comments regarding my phone issue. My frustration was mostly due to the provider’s policies and the representative basically lying to me regarding the delivery. At the store the technician/employees helping me all said (I will not mention names) they all work for the company and had for years, but also hate the company’s policies. I will be composing a letter with the transcripts of my chats and sending off to the provider. It may help someone in the future.
Silver Linings – Although my phone issue was extremely frustrating the outcome of getting a new phone far outweighed the downside of my experience. I learned, once again, the importance of backing everything up including my phone data. I also learned how to upload and convert data between different cloud services and a few new apps. The new phone is fantastic. It measures my steps, can measure my heart rate and stress levels, is 5G, and syncs with MFP. Note to self – be more patient through times of frustration!
All – I am sorry about my rant yesterday. Looking back I feel it was a very petty situation especially since so many on this thread are full caretakers, have family and friends who are overcoming major diseases and illnesses, are struggling with health issues, or are fighting their way back to a healthier mental state. My heart goes out to you all.
Karen – I loved the moving of the house story. Women should not be underestimated. It’s great the house was saved for future generations. So many want “new” today.
Barbie – I remember both my mom and grandmother every time I make broth from any type of carcass or bone. During times of my childhood I would detest we were having soup “again”. As I grew up I realized it was a way of extending food when there was little and the older generations were taught not to waste. I now find myself craving those soups and always make stock when a carcass or bone is available.
Terri – Congratulations on your weight loss.
Kim – I am so happy you had a nice Thanksgiving. Wow, bragging about six pounds of bacon! I do love the stuff, but goodness. I keep seeing a heart attack on a plate. What a great thing to do for the little lady – circle of life ceremony. You certainly have a big heart.
Michele – It sounds like you had a good trip even though the road food was not something to be desired. I have breaded fish in the morning and cooked later on in the day. I make sure the fish is very dry when I prep in the morning. I have never attempted to prep the day before.
Katla – In Florida almost every coastal town has a boat parade. The events have gotten so big it is almost impossible to go to one unless one has a hotel booked a year in advance or has a friend with a coastal home.
Viv – I find myself thinking more about dear Charlie during the holidays too. We had many future plans too. My salve is knowing I was fortunate to have met him even though our time was cut short. If I lived closer I would wring the electrician’s neck for you.
Heather – I was struggling with an event too. I am sorry to say it is a wedding. But, after making my decision I honestly feel lighter. There are a host of reasons the biggest being financial and some emotional. It requires an overnight stay and clothes which at this time I cannot afford. I will send a wedding present with a note explaining my absence.
Lisa – Thinking of you. Yes, like you, I never was comfortable with hugs. Though I thoroughly enjoy giving them when needed.
Wishing all a great day.
