Barbara – the last time I went to the MD for the trigger finger, I’d had two cortisone shots. He said that he doesn’t like to give more than 3 and that if it happened again, he’d have to do surgery. We shall see. He did say, and I guess I can understand this, that he likes for it to be pretty bad. I guess it’s the same as with a cataract. They need it to be bad to be sure they’re getting it all.

Meg – one of the things that I don’t like is kickboxing. Maybe it’s because my hamstrings are so tight (even tho I stretch them every day) so I find it hard to get my legs up high. Good for you starting it, tho!!!

Ken & Lynette are supposed to come here. Well, Lynette was saying about how it’s the end of the year and with the changeover (not quite sure what that means) Ken might not want to come. But he’s not a person who lets something like that stand in his way. Anyway, I’ve got pork chops marinating in the refrig. On the outside chance they don’t come, we can eat them. I’m thinking I’ll make rice in my IP (I’m loving it, took some of the yogurt to mahjongg last night and everyone loved it), green beans (for the green) and carrots (Vince won’t eat the green beans), and I’ll make an apple pie for dessert. Vince will eat that. I’ll probably fry up some pierogi, I’ll eat those. Every year there are end-of-the-year things to do, so that’s nothing new.

Amber – better buy them at a thrift store. At the rate you’re going, you’ll need more new pants

Barbie – I do notice that when I miss exercise for an extended period of time (not just one or two days), I feel so sluggish and can’t WAIT to get back to it. Plus…I do truly believe it helps my hot flashes.

Yvonne – I don’t think I tell you often enough and I don’t many times comment on your “national day” but I always look forward to it

Well, tomorrow is the day. The day I go on Medicare.

Made the apple pie for tonight. I also made a small one for us just to see how much apple juice there is when you cut the pie. Unfortunately, the covering for the edges fell off so the edges burned. But only the edges on ours so that’s OK.

I’m dropping hint by hint by hint that I’d like a Roomba. Well, it’s true. While the Roomba probably doesn’t get into the corners, it probably will also help with the cat fur and litter droppings. We don’t have a lot, but litter gets on the feet of the cats and they can’t help it but small particles get on the floor. Never fails that after I vacuum, not 10 minutes later there’s cat fur.

Well, Ken & Lynette will come tomorrow. Ken doesn’t know when he’s going to get off work. I would think the company would let people leave around 3 because this is New Years Eve, even 5. But Lynette thinks that he might be so drained that he wouldn’t be good company. Plus, if they come tomorrow Ken can see Jess. She likes Ken – not Lynette so much. So I’ll just keep the pork chops in the refrigerator. I did take them out of the marinade. I hope they’ll be good. I think I once marinated them for 2 days and they weren’t real good. So this time I took them out of the marinade. Don’t know if that’ll make a difference or not.

Karen – so glad to hear that Olivia is better somewhat. A women-only gated community – what a great idea!

Glad to hear Olivia is on the mend (I was one of the confused who thought it was Athena who had pneumonia sorry) I'm terrible with names.

Happy New Year's Eve friends!

Heather: We just watched the BBC coverage of the fireworks in London. Fabulous! Now I just have to hang in 4 1/2 more hours to watch the coverage from Times Square which will be at 10PM my time.

Amber: Congratulations!!! You are doing so well! Inspiring.

Rebecca: Love your word of the year. I think you will rock it.

Barbara: So glad you were able to save the roadies. And brava to you on winning your first grant!!! Coach Lisa, good job!

Michele: Once you have the trigger thumb surgery it never comes back. Really glad I did it. My surgeon herself also had the procedure done. If you get a roomba, I can't wait to hear which cat will be first to ride it. 😼

I picked up tamales from the specialty restaurant and made an apple cake for tonight. The guys couldn't wait until dinner time, so we had lunch at 3, and dessert at 5, which is fine by me. Also have black eyed peas and a ham hock in the Instant Pot for tomorrow. A quiet a sober NYE here. If I get sleepy, I may just pop in my ear buds, crank up some salsa/merengue music and dance my way into the new decade. 💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽

I haven't set any goals or intentions for the New Year. But, mulling many options for days, I've settled on NOW for my word.

I would just assume that you're going to buy one for yourself. You should! My mother bought one years ago and still uses it, I think.

Tips that have worked for me

Put your current numbers into MFP
Select sedentary as your activity level
Choose how much you'd like to lose (i.e. 1 lb/week)
MFP will give you the number of calories to eat
Eat those calories
... and weigh (with food scale) and log every bite.


A few extra things have helped me along the way:

1) Exploring my grocery stores and markets to find delicious, filling low calorie foods. It's amazing what's out there.

2) Exercising as much as possible. Exercise gives me extra calories to work with so that I can have things like pizza now and the ... but to keep my sanity and not wear myself out, my exercise quantity varies as does what I do for exercise.

3) Eating how I want to eat. This is where everyone is different ... some people prefer to employ fasting, others like high protein diets, some like vegetarian diets, some like to eat 2 or 3 meals a day, others like to graze. Go with what works for you.

Personally, if I had to define what I do, my diet is probably most similar to a Mediterranean diet with a vegetarian lean ... and I'm a grazer. I also have to adjust what I do depending on my cycling events ... they're tricky because I need the fuel without going overboard.


And stick to it for 5 weeks, then reassess how things are going.

Once the holiday season wraps up, I'm hoping to be able to start working on losing weight again. If I'm going to have nose surgery, I know that recovery from surgeries is easier if a person is lighter and fitter ... plus if I can breathe again, I'd like to be in a position to take advantage of that!!

And now, I'm thinking about goals for 2020.

It is difficult to make goals because I'm not sure what's going to happen one day to the next. I plan, God laughs ... or something like that. The last couple years have been a lesson in patience and flexibility and giving up a lot of what I would like to do in the interests of what needs to be done.

However, I do have some goals I'd like to accomplish, if possible ...

I've modified this slightly ...

Organisation/Financial Goals -- Getting our taxes done and other paperwork in order.

Spiritual Goals -- I'd like to start attending church a bit more regularly. I'll also include relaxation and recreation in here. Down time. I get very little of that at the moment and need more. For me that might be sleep and photography.

Fitness Goals -- Exercise, Eating, Sleeping -- Working up to running 5 km at least a couple times a month. Working up to cycling 50 km at least once a month.

Educational Goals -- Uni! I would like to finish my Master's degree in 2020.

Family/Medical Goals -- Husband -- Never-ending stream of medical appointments + projects with 2 or 3 different organisations. And me! A goal is to get me into healthy shape again!

Career Goals -- One of the main things my area is planning to work on is streamlining the processes a bit. Meanwhile I need to learn a lot more SQL and as much about what 2 different people I work/worked with did. I'm also on the board of two organisations now. Both interest me a lot, but I'm also hoping that taking on leadership roles might help advance my career a little.

Social Goals -- Cycling Club. I've made a detailed list of what I need to do, which helps.
-- My Personal Website -- I have started working on this. I'd post it here, but not sure if I can: machka . net This has a social aspect in that we go to Wordpress meetings now and then.
