February 2020 Monthly Running Challenge

I just finished running Donna, so that is 1 or my 2 marathons this month. Mostly my injuries are healed, but cramped a bit and that caused a slower pace than I wanted later in the race. Still finished, so no worries.
I'm just planning Oak Island, NC next weekend.13 -

Initial weather temps had called for close to 50 at race time, but as the week went by that changed and we were looking at 40 at race time with wind chills. So what I had decided to wear had to go and tights and long sleeves were in, with touque and gloves added in.
Grateful again that race time was at 11, so had plenty of time to eat, dress, and get going. It’s nice not being stressed about that part.
Got there and got my timing chip and then the waiting started. It was cool, so did a few drills to warm up. Stood in line for bathroom, more drills.
Finally time to start. Again everyone in one corral at start, both the 5K and 10K (actually 6.5 miles).
I started at the front because I never got to lol!
Off we went , started downhill for about .25 miles then a little flat and then the hills started. 1 mile hill and then a bit downhill and flat, and then another longish hill. This we had to do 3 times, with an almost half mile hill to the finish.
I started out fast because of the downhill and was going to do the same strategy as the last race (fast as I could on the downhills and flats and slower on the hills) which was working but then some of the course had eroded from the heavy rains and there was debris everywhere so navigating was tough. And there were some steep inclines. I ended up walking for about 30 sec at some of the hills. I didn’t want to, but if I felt if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be able to finish strong. Also I was trying to get at about hour time and I knew the walking was not going to help, but it wasn’t meant to be this time.
I finished 6.5 miles in 1:4:09 so 9.52 min/mile pace. I finished 3rd in age group but there were only 4 of us lol.
The winner of the age group places first every time. Except for a 10k last year where I did, but I don’t think she ran that one.
It’s like I’m chasing her each time. I’m 8th overall in the series for the year so far.
Anyway it was a fun race, had baked potatoes and brownies after, and I was relatively happy with my performance given the conditions of the course.
Next up is my HM end of March. Unless I accidentally sign up for another in between.
8k, 10k done. HM, 5K, and 15K/10miler yet to do.
Well done!0 -
@hamsterwheel6 and @T1DCarnivoreRunner Congratulations!!!!! Great running!1

RACE REPORT!!!!!
Yesterday was my first race since September, which is a little bonkers. I’d signed up for three races in the fall that I blew off mainly for mental health reasons, then didn’t sign up for a planned January race due to illness. I’d convinced my weekend running buddy (P) to sign up for yesterday’s 5k, though, so there was no backing out.
I was a little bit worried about this one, to be honest - P and I started running together around Thanksgiving but missed most of January. Before yesterday our longest run together had been about 1.75 miles. Also, P has refused to take walking breaks so far, and tends to push my pace a little bit, so our runs have been a little tougher than I'd strictly prefer. My endurance overall is better than hers, but that’s running a little bit slower with occasional walk breaks. Also, that cold hit me really hard.
All that said, the race went great. We got an email a day or two before saying we were on “white alert” as the temperature was forecast to be 10 degrees. Well, it was not 10 degrees when my husband dropped me off and went to park - it was -2 degrees. FUN!
Pickup went fine - this was another Twin Cities in Motion race, the group that does the Twin Cities Marathon, and they’re generally on top of their game. That said, the emails failed to note that the starting line for the 5K was a bit of a walk from packet pickup, which made meeting up P and my husband a little tricky. We managed (thank you technology!), and then it was time for the hardest part of the entire morning: waiting for the race to start.
The sun was shining but it was still absurdly cold. We did both take off a mid-layer, which my husband ended up tying around his head before he didn’t have a scarf. He then asked permission not to film the starting line so he could go back to the car to warm up, which seemed completely fair.
We refused to take off our masks for the “before” photo.
Getting started felt great because we were finally moving. There was a little bit of a crush but not too bad for a 5K. I suspect the weather kept most of the walkers inside. We did start off by one woman who somehow looked like she was just strolling along, yet somehow keeping a 12 minute/mile pace. We also played a little passing tag with a couple with a baby in a stroller screaming its head off. I try really hard not to judge people’s parenting, but I felt bad for that kid.
The first mile went by pretty smoothly, at which point I was definitely warming up. I didn’t check the temperature during the run, but it was 1 when we started and 8 degrees by the time we finished. I was actually a little too warm in my jacket - I’ve only really been comfortable in it at temperatures under 5 degrees, and the sun and lack of wind made it feel warmer.
The second mile seemed like it was taking forever, which I found briefly concerning even though I was still feeling pretty good, until I realized where we were and figured out that I’d missed the two mile marker and we were almost to three miles. P and I are both big fans of the finish line sprint, so we picked up the pace for the last .2 miles and finished with big smiles. Overall, the whole thing just went really smoothly (except for those 20-ish minutes before the start, but we survived).
Smiles at the finish!
We picked up some lukewarm but at least not frozen water and slightly hotter chocolate, then found my husband. We gave P a ride back to her house and the two of us agreed to run TCM’s next race together. That’s going to mean downgrading from the 10 Mile to the 5K, but I’m good with that. In addition to the medals we also got hats. The design isn’t really my style, but I belatedly realized that there was a really nice fleece liner sewed in, so that’s going to become a go-to while it stays cold.
SWAG!
@janejellyroll: Sorry we didn’t get to connect for a pre-race MFP photo. I hope your race went as well as ours, and maybe we can meet up at the Hot Dash!

Walked today before the rain hit. Kept it slow and steady while listening to my book on audible. So good! “The Giver of Stars”. I didn’t want the walk to end tbh. People probably think I am crazy as I found myself giggling out loud. Last week, I was weepy when “The Dutch House” ended while running. Oh yeah….crazy book lady!🤪

@PastorVincent
I agree. I just saw doc 3 weeks ago and he checked them out. I don't put in that many miles so I think they are good for a while longer. But it will be in the back of my mind along with shoes as I try to work through this issue.2 -
8.5 miles in the light rain, enjoyed the run! Trying to find the motivation and energy now to clean my house...😟4

@hamsterwheel6 - nice job!
@MegaMooseEsq - way to brave the cold for the race!
We got home later than planned yesterday from our daughter’s swim meet, so I fixed something for dinner while my husband ran. To be honest I wasn’t feeling the cold, so I was glad to have an excuse. He came back and was bright red from the cold, so I was happy with my choice. It was another day of the swim meet, but it was held at a YMCA and we have a membership so while warm-ups were going on I was able to get my run in. It was a nice treadmill with decline settings. I couldn’t figure out the workout videos (maybe they required internet and the WIFi was being drained due to the meet), so I did my own hill type of workout so I had an excuse to try out the -decline.
2/2 - 4 miles
2/4 - 2

It was a picture-perfect winter day here. We've been waiting for a good snow - it's been weirdly rainy and crappy this winter - and after our big snowfall Friday and Saturday, we have at least 15 inches of fluffy snow on the ground. I had some conflicting activity options today (plus you know, work and housework, and that kind of thing), but I had to take the opportunity to go cross-country skiing with some trail running friends. The conditions were absolutely amazing. It started out a little chilly but the sky was blue, the sun was out, and the snow was sparkly. The trails were perfectly groomed. This is only like the 4th time I've ever skied - and the last few attempts last year and the year before were pretty humbling. Lots of falling. This time I didn't fall at all and I felt much more in control. The downhills were still scary but also really fun. Being a lot stronger now probably helps a lot, and being less afraid to fall. A couple of pics under the spoiler:
We skied for about an hour and a half total, and some people stayed to ski more, but I was definitely not up for another loop. It's tiring! I headed out and decided to meet my friends who were rock climbing and just catch up with them if not climb a little. I ended up climbing for about an hour. Then headed home and walked the dog for an hour. Then I thought it was way too nice and my streak is still going so I better not sit down - just go out and run a little. And now I am not sure I will ever leave the couch again.
It was a very exhausting but totally fun winter weekend.

@megamooseesq whoa amazing! And I thought 10 degrees C felt cold this morning!
I went out for 8k this morning, and when I finished my run, I noticed my HR was mostly in the green. So I had to have a proper look. OMG my HR has really dramatically improved over the last month or so. My VO2max has gone up to 50! (yes I know, garmin so not accurate but still woah).
This running regularly has really made some dramatic changes to my metrics!

I ran 10 miles this morning. It was a beautiful day. The run started out really good even though it was a little windy and wind is not my favorite. It was 63°F with 15 mph winds at the start and by the end it was 68°F with 19 mph winds. I did have to alter my route a bit. I just couldn't deal with running straight into the wind so I tried to run East and West as much as I could and avoided running South as best I could. This run was quite a contrast from my snowy runs earlier in the week. It would have been too warm if it hadn't been so windy. I was feeling a little blah when I got up this morning, but I really enjoyed the run and it improved my mood a lot. It is supposed to be rainy all week so not sure how the runs will go. I may have been too optimistic with my goal this month since it is the shortest month and often has the worst weather. I guess we'll see how it goes.
Great races @polskagirl01, @hamsterwheel6, @t1dCarnivoreRunner, @MegaMooseEsq and @ContraryMaryMary congrats to your little triathlete! She looks so happy!
I hope I didn't miss anyone. Great running everybody!

No run today - stayed home and nursed my hip and ankle. Ice, heat, ice heat. I also read everything i could find on iliopsoas bursitis and that seems like a good fit along with a mild sprain but who knows. The therapies are the same thing I would do if I DID know for sure what is wrong and if i DID NOT know for sure. Ice, rest, heat.
I did manage to catch up on laundry and meal prep and clean so that’s something!
Also did some ankle-less strength training and read a few inspirational marathon stories about people who had sprained ankles but still managed to heal enough to run.
In any event, mine is probably very mild. Not a lot of swelling and on an itsy bitsy bit of red. Not too bad, right?
I’ve managed to get myself anxious about the shoe swap i made yesterday. What if the ankle thing WAS NOT the shoes? What if I exchanged the Mizunos for ASICS and then I hate them?!!!
Definitely first world problems and absolutely a result of staying in and resting most of the day.... also worst case scenario is that i exchange shoes again. Worse things have happened.
@Avidkeo that’s awesome about your HR!
And the rest of you running and prepping and training and meeting goals / YOU ARE AMAZING!4 -
SUNDAY UPDATE - Pastor Vincent vs Boston!
For those new/or with short memories I recently hired a coach to help me run faster - with the goal of a BQ in 2021. It is probably an unrealistic goal, but I am not getting any younger, so going for it. Several people asked to be updated on what the coach has in for me so I post each week what the coach's plan was, and what I actually did.
DAY :::: PLAN :::: ACUTAL
Monday :::: 10 miles :::: 10 miles
Tuesday :::: Rest Day ::::: Rest Day
Wednesday :::: 10 miles :::: 10 miles
Thursday :::: 8 miles+ Strides :::: 5 Miles on dreadmil

@PastorVincent you’re killing it!
What does it mean for Thursday “strides?”
Do you find it difficult to stick to the plan?
HOW do you fit it all in?
I am trying to think how I will fit everything in this week, considering I work + evening stuff with the kids:
Monday: therapy, home around 7
Tuesday: friends over for dinner
Wednesday: madison’s haircut (she designed it herself) + tutoring + dinner out (yay no cooking)
Thursday: therapy
Friday: take kids to their dad, home around 8:30ish?
Then, add in: the kids need lunches packed, baths, to lay out their clothes, etc. oh yeah and making dinner.
On paper it’s simple -
Monday I could tentatively run after therapy
Thursday I could tentatively run after therapy
Friday - i *could* but what usually happens is that i am completely drained from the week of running around and working so i get home, watch a show, go to bed.
This is all of course .... if my ankle is better 🙄4
