Right now I am focusing on one day at a time. I got some very concerning medical DX - but I am also struggling with severe depression and anxiety, so actually working on loosing weight and getting healthy is a struggle all on its own. So any encouragement is welcome.
OMG Sjonathans, the exact same thing happened to me. Left the doctors in tears the other day and came on the community that night. So I'm right there with you. It's been so challenging for me and I feel like I'm stuck in this never ending cycle. But ever since I've joined the community and was surrounded with all this positive energy I have started to feel a bit better reading everyone's posts and it's making me feel like "I can do this!"
But, like you said I'm taking it one day at a time!
So im telling you:
YOU CAN DO THIS!
WE CAN DO THIS!15 -
Hi everyone. I am new here, well I have used MFP on and off for years but never tried the community before.
I have cheated and put my SW as before I gave birth last Jan - 246lb, so about a stone of my weight loss was just giving birth. CW is 205lb which is nearly 7lb less than before I fell pregnant two years ago! So I am happy about that.
I feel more motivated to diet than ever before. Mostly because my sister has bought me a bridesmaids dress for her wedding which is too small for me (on my request), and I NEED to be able to fit in it. Part of me feels like a fool for setting myself this challenge ...10 -
@charsuzy This man just inspires me each time I watch him walk through his journey!!
Be inspired!

Happy March everyone❣️ Congratulations to those who made it to One-derland‼️ It’s my hope I will join you there soon 🤞🏽❣️I ended February with a loss of 6.4 lbs. I’ve noticed my loss has slowed but thankfully not plateaued. I’ve been able to adjust and continue losing. I know as I approach my DCI, I have to be mindful of my calorie count and ensure I don’t eat back exercise calories 🤨

@Sableprncs and @sjonathans we are glad you two are here, and I think most of us can relate to that overwhelming feeling of being stuck in a cycle. Being here is a great step! One day at a time- YOU CAN DO IT!
Start by making one little positive change, and roll with that for a few days, see how you feel, see where it takes you. After a while that one little positive change becomes the new normal, then maybe make another one.
@charsuzy my advice for feeling motivated to exercise is to find what really works for you. Don't try to do something you don't like! For me, I dislike exercising first thing in the morning. I will always hate that. If I try to make that happen, I end up not exercising nine times out of ten. So, find something you like, and figure out what time you feel most like doing it, and try that out. After a while, you'll feel so good you won't be able to imagine not having that as part of your routine.
@pamiede your progress is amazing. Wow- 100 pounds in less than a year! Thanks for the inspiration!5 -
Hi everyone!
I'm new to this thread, and glad that I found it.
I started in October 2019 at 310. My current weight is 258. I felt I was doing so well, up until mid February, I just lost all motivation!
I'm trying to regain the motivation and mindset that I started out with, but am having a little trouble finding it.
So for March my goal is to get back to logging all food, exercising at least 3 times a week and concentrating a little more on me (and not worry so much).
Look forward to reading and seeing everyone's progress.

@CupcakeCrusoe – “…it’s about the form. Get the form right.” Yes, I spend a lot of time telling my left knee it needs to be pointing forward during my runs and my walks! Also I need to remind myself to stand up straight all the time!
@sonyaj989 – wow, meatless March! In the spirit of the Lenten season, I decided to try meatless Fridays, which might morph into meatless Mondays long-term.
@VictorSmashes – I keep a huge infuser pitcher of water at my desk. I do tend to guzzle about 24 ounces at a time. But my goal is for the water in the pitcher to be gone by the time I leave at the end of the day.
@sharpdust – giving up fast food was so great, and I could not believe I wouldn’t miss it. I think the last time I had McDonald’s, I was on a road trip and it was the only choice. But other than that, I think the last time I regularly had fast food was back in 2013. Once you lose the taste for it, you’ll have the same reaction as @Terytha: I can do this way better myself, at home!
@kathrynegrady – sometimes I tell myself I’m getting into beast mode! You already learned one important lesson, though, which is that it’s truly your food intake that matters for weight loss. Exercise helps but it’s not always the boost everyone thinks it is! And for exercise, find something you like to do because in the long run it’s consistency that matters, not the difficulty. And don’t discount weight lifting, it takes a lot of calories to repair that muscle tissue!
@sjonathans – during my better times, which would include the past nine months or so, it’s easy for me to slow down and think, “If I overeat and gain weight, how is that extra weight going to make any other issue I’m facing better or easier?” It’s not that the extra weight might compound my misery, it’s my way of deliberately separating my thinking about eating from other emotions I’m experiencing.
@vegasgirl0825 – was laughing today, reading that you live in Wisconsin! So far from Las Vegas!
@charsuzy – I’m going to share this thought from my favorite podcaster at Phit-n-Phat, since she does frequently address the topic of motivation. She coaches her group that you should not wait for motivation. “Do you wait for motivation to brush your teeth, or to do anything else that’s good for you?” To me that’s a fair point. Thinking in those terms, waiting for motivation sounds more like waiting for inspiration. Personally, I handle it by making myself start my planned workouts with a rule that I must put forth a good faith effort for at least 10-15 minutes, and if I still feel like I don’t want to workout that day, I stop and go home. I truly cannot remember a time when I’ve stopped at that point and said, “nope, not today!” Also, find something you like to do. Not everyone likes running! I want to love Zumba and Barre classes, but they are both hard on my knees in a way running is not!

This is so interesting! I looked back at my workout a year ago on March 2, 2019! I was 275 pounds on this date and I burned so many more calories because I was not as in shape as I am now.
This is now:

@Brockka90, @charsuzy and @jellygrl Motivation. We all want it. I hear it said a lot on this site. The thing about motivation is, you just can't stay motivated. It's not a natural state. There will be moments when you will be motivated: seeing the scale move downward, seeing an old picture of you and realizing you're fitter now, seeing that one quote that pulls the day together. That is great. Those are good moments.
But the day to day- it's more about habits. Why am I weighing everything on a food scale to the gram? Because I know that if I make it a habit, then I'm going to get to my motivation- which for me, is Future Hotter Me. It's fine to be vain as long as it's the thing that keeps you getting healthier. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
But seriously- you find motivation where you find it: better health, lifting more weight, running further or faster, or just being Future Hotter You. All those are acceptable. To get there, we do the very un-hot, un-sexy work of building habits that will get us there. The motivation is a bonus.
So take a minute and think why you want to be smaller. What do you want to happen, who do you want to be?
@Danielle__S You are killing it, well done.
@mmccloy12 heck yeah you've got this.
@AlexandraFindsHerself1971 I'm glad you have something that helps, that sounds horribly painful.
@Terytha I fall into that trap with food all the time. When I was pregnant with my second, all I wanted in the entire world was a Fish Filet sandwich from McDonalds. I thought about it for weeks. When I finally got it, it tasted like nothing and grease.
@Lasmartchika oh man I love me some Zumba. Get it!
@vegasgirl0825, @shorepine, @pamiede Those are great goals and you are all on your way! Pamiede you are killing it! I love seeing you complete your diary every day.
@sjonathans You can do this. We're all here for you.
@asthesoapturns your decal idea sounds fantastic!
@sharpdust get that gym time!
@sableprncs and @nesmith77 welcome! we're here for you even if you're just lurking!
@darksunapril crazy... like a fox! You can do this! But I speak for myself when I say I'd like pictures of this dress!!!
@mmdeveau I had some bad form going that had to be corrected- fortunately, caught it before it turned into an injury.
@BrownSugar17 thanks for sharing! I love that! You are so fit now.
Those meals I preplanned today? Yeah, one of them went out the window. I had planned for leftover chili, but turns out someone in the office ate enough where I only had enough for lunch and not dinner. Thank goodness for Subway's chopped chicken salad- just a pile of vegetables and chicken, yum. I don't even need dressing, because I get all the good sweet peppers and the relish in there. Mmmmm. My day went fine, Flo's coming, so who knows what the scale is going to do, but I know I'm on track. And those brownies are gone out of my house, which is also a huge help.12 -
@CupcakeCrusoe It wasn't even as salty as I hoped, it was just greasy. The worst lol. But I've come a long way in my relationship with food that I can laugh about it right now.
On the subject of motivation: the reason you need it is because you talk yourself out of doing the thing you need to do, right? Or maybe you're struggling with depression and anxiety as I know some of us are. Captain Awkward had some advice I've been using (modified) for a long time: aggressively agreeing with myself.
Brain: It takes too much work to exercise.
Me: Sure does! I better get started.
Brain: You're too tired and sad.
Me: Yep, I guess I'll just be tired and sad while exercising.
Brain: You're the worst. You're a failure.
Me: OK. Now I'm gonna go be the worst failure while exercising.
I do this for everything, because otherwise I lack enough executive function to even brush my teeth. Depression whispers mean lies but they lose some oomph when you agree like they're not even interesting.13 -
Well, I got all the downstairs housework done and a good dinner (steak, baby potatoes, and brussel sprouts with rolls) ready. Boyfriend came home and didn't want any of it. Girlfriend's asleep; she may wake up sometime this evening and eat her portion. So I ate my steak and rice (I try not to eat potatoes) and am feeling sort of sad. It's not my fault he's depressed, but I miss him when he's like this. I think I will wait til he goes up to bed or 8 pm, whichever comes first, and go to the gym and then stop and get my girlfriend's meds on the way back.7

Alternatively here is a most excellent article on breaking the low mood cycle, which is what most of us get trapped in when we speak of needing motivation. This thing:
It's a good read, I recommend!

Thanks for posting these things. I hadn't even seen it from that perspective, since it's not my experience, and I really appreciate it.5 -
Hey ladies... so today I went to the doctor and her large and intimidating scale read 229... which means I’m down another 2.1 lbs... but it’s not supposed to be my weigh in day so I’m going to pretend it didn’t happen (that and the fact that I somehow lost 2 lbs overnight has me thinking it may be one of those weird body fluctuations)
In other news, I’m looking over my meal diary and I’m realizing that even though I’m “kinda” staying within my calorie range, it’s mostly snacks lol... so I definitely have to start working on including more nutritional calories.
@Terytha my therapist actually brought that cycle loop up to me last week and it makes so much sense. A lot of times, I want to wait until I FEEL better before I take any action and seeing that cycle helps me realize that DOING better naturally helps you FEEL better... thanks for the reminder!❤️ And I like the concept of aggressively agreeing... I’m going to use that!
@sharpdust ok... I walked 2 miles today, tomorrow I’m shooting for a 1/2 hour of yoga and a 30 minute power walk. I was planning on joining the gym at the end of the month but I must say, y’all have me pretty excited to join sooner! Lol. Maybe this week on payday.
@sjonathans and @Sableprncs depression and anxiety are REAL... I’m learning, above all else, to be kinder to myself. Depression especially can be a real jerk when it comes to making you feel like crap, so just keep reminding yourself that you deserve to live your best life possible, because you matter❤️❤️
@charsuzy to be honest... there was no ah ha! moment for me. It was just a decision in the moment to do something. No plan for the next day... just a “I’m going for a walk right now”. And I felt good afterwards but that feeling isn’t going to carry me through the next few months. So I just started working on finding a moment in each day to do SOMETHING... it helps to be able to log the exercise into MFP though, because you can see how it subtracts from your daily calories so there may be some momentary motivation in that.
@AlexandraFindsHerself1971 your meal sounds delicious! And I’m inspired by you dealing with everything by deciding to go to the gym to work off your feelings. I am trying to get to that point where even when I’m feeling blah, my first thought is to work it off. Congrats for that.
@CupcakeCrusoe wait... are you saying someone at work ate your food 👀👀... do we need to have a chat with the team at the office?? Lol9 -
I'm sure I have more but transferring from dead computer to living one is tedious. If anyone has a Cricut or Silhouette I'm happy to put the cut files in a public folder or drive somewhere.

@RavenStCloud take care. We are starting to get a few cases in Washington State now. The Y was not crowded tonight. So I guess we weren’t in a crowd and between pool, showers, hand sanitizers I am not too worried.
@torihudson6 My birthday is Friday. When is yours? Happy Birthday!
@shorepine I believe you that this is your month to hit onderland!
@pamiede you too.
@charsuzy I think the motivation comes after words which of course is an oxymoron. When my body knows I have committed to actually go like I am in the car on the way or I am opening the door with my running shoes on and there is no going back it gives me a little cheer like. Yay we are going to get some exercise. It is something like when you let your dog know you are taking it for a walk. It is just a small moment of joy you can miss if you aren’t paying attention.
Today was aquafit and the Y which was packed in January (new years resolutions) was a lot emptier. My husband and I think it is the Corona virus. There are quite a few cases in our county and one in the county we work in. Another there is out of quarantine. We are going to get enough sleep and wash hands a lot. We will stay away from crowds but they aren’t at the Y now anyway which is sort of sad. Our teacher left this week so we all just did our own thing and it was just fine. I think that this week I will just keep on keepin’ on. Nothing new and different but I am keeping on track. I should lose soon. I think I will go to bed now with my book and a glass of water.
Hope to “see” you all tomorrow.9 -
Hi all,
So I for March my basic goal is to continue the strength training I set up in Feb.
I'll stick with it until the 5th of April, then I have to swap out plans and ...probably make it harder. But for now, I have a routine that I do 5 days a week. Its short and definitely leaves me feeling it. My goal for last month was to lose about 4 pounds and make 190.0. (Which I *almost did*)
Starting this month at: 190.4
Goal for the end of March: 185
Has anybody ever used a body composition scale? (How much you weigh, but also your body fat %, water retention, and muscle mass). Do they work??? Thinking of getting one.4 -
@Emilyestelle1 I have a body comp scale and I really like it. It lets me see the whole picture not just the weight. So if my weight goes up but does the water, I know I am just retaining water, or gaining muscle or any other scenario.2
-
@Emilyestelle1 - my scale has body composition measurements, and I used them when I first got it. But the measurements started to make no sense and so I now only use it as a regular scale.
Generally speaking, I think most home body composition scales will have a high variability associated with them. (If my body fat measurement was inaccurate, but consistent, I would use the body comp numbers because I'd be interested in the change.) What I have been told is that the body comp scales that come with a bar you hold in your hands as you weigh are more accurate at measuring body fat.
I know that @speyerj did post on the February thread about how she uses her body comp scale, and she went into a lot of detail.3
