We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Friday- imastar2 (Derrick)
Today's topic: The Flavor of Life
Some people eat for fuel. Some people eat for the flavor and texture of food. Some people strike a balance between the two.
Where do you fall in the spectrum? Has it changed for you over the years? How has it influenced your lifestyle choices? Do people in your life have an effect on where you lie upon this curve?

I have always loved the flavor of food the texture for me just comes with the type of food . For years I've thought if I didn't need food to survive I would cold turkey quit it because I must have an abusive personality. If I love a food then I used to think I wanted to have more of it. However along with the flavor comes the portion control which is where I get into trouble. There is very little food that I don't like the flavor so there in lies another problem.
What I have resided in my thought process is there are certain foods that we call trigger foods and I just have to be mindful of those foods or types of foods. ie; to eat a 1/3 cup of my favorite ice cream is most difficult because I love just about any ice cream flavor and often times just keep digging in the carton.

Yes change is the exact word describing what has and had to take place and has changed over the years due to the fact that I'm constantly in the weight loss mode. Now I'm older with heart health issues and really there is no other choice but to conform to a balanced portioned control nutritional diet which I'm working diligently on.

Like Derrick, there is very little food I don’t enjoy in terms of flavor. However I am a creature of habit and so don’t often venture out of my preferences to try new foods. So there’s that.
Also, couldn’t agree more about trigger foods. For me it’s salty/cheesy. I could easily eat an entire large bag of potato chips or a pan of Mac and cheese if I allowed myself to, which is why we banish these foods from the home. Definitely not something done in previous years.
I am fortunate to have a supportive partner although I don’t need hand holding or food police to help me implement my food choices.3 -
I eat to be satisfied. Filling enough, tasty enough. Some treats. An indulgence now and again.
One day I caught myself internally whining about not get enough pizza. “I love pizza. Life sucks without it.” Well, stop. I don’t love pizza. Not really. That’s an exaggeration. And it’s not helpful. So I quit saying that to myself. Sticking to facts isn’t always easy.3 -
To start with fuel and health. I have been doing a bit more with the "fancy" stuff lately at times. Made some worldclass snow and sugar snap peas from the garden using ginger, a bit of swirled garlic in the butter, and water chestnuts.
Also reverse seared a wagyu sirloin steak I got on sale that was stellar. Mostly eat simply and usually only have beef maybe 3 or 4 times a year etc. I do try to avoid trigger foods.2
