What do I do when I stress out?? I definitely turn to food. And lately have very little self control. Argh. It's so terribly hard to shift my mindset to doing something else instead and that's what you've got to do. People will offer all sorts of advice, such as cleaning closets, walking/exercising, gardening, volunteer, reading a book or watch a movie, etc., etc., but I have no inclination atm to pick a different option than stuffing my face. Unfortunately my body is reflecting my terrible choice.
Is there some form of activity you like that you can lose yourself in? Any sport such as hiking, tennis, walking with a buddy? One of my dds hikes a lot with her friend and their dogs. My other dd does kick-boxing, yoga, and is starting to do some lifting. A friend of mine swears jogging is her drug of choice.
Look at your interests, things you're the most passionate about and see if you can involve yourself to the point of getting away from the kitchen.
Good luck!!!
If you need some extra encouragement, feel free to friend me; I'm definitely in the same boat and would love to lose the 20# I've regained in the past couple months or so.0 -
I used to emotionally eat when I was younger but changing my relationship with food really helped me get on top of my health and fitness long term. I’ve recently gained a few kg due to ill health but losing it now that I’m well has been a breeze as I don’t see food as a source of comfort now but rather fuel for my workouts. If I’m sad now I’ll go for a jog or go for a hike. It took a long time talking with some educated people and changing my habits but I’m completely different now.
My advice is to not punish yourself for wanting to feel comforted in times of stress but rather explore new ways to comfort yourself while making more mindful choices when it comes to emotional eating. The transition will be difficult and slow and you will backslide but you can do this. I started by going for a walk while eating some chips then my walks got longer and my snack choices got healthier then suddenly I wasn’t taking food anymore then my walks became jogs, then huge hill hikes. It’s so good for your mental health as well because sitting down and eating does physically remove you from your emotional state but walking often can.0 -
