Drinking Alcohol and Weight Loss

I read somewhere that alcohol consumption is up since the start of quarantine. That doesn't surprise me. The levels of stress and isolation create an environment ripe for the use of alcohol. Plus, I have seen the liquor shelves go from full to nearly empty to back to mostly full again.

Most of us are social drinkers, but we all probably drink at home from time to time. I think it is important to remind ourselves (myself included) that alcohol consumption does have an effect on our weight loss efforts.

I quit drinking alcohol just over 13 months ago by the grace of God and the principles of A.A. although technically I am not a member.
When I quit drinking I discovered that points weren’t my real issue and almost magically the 23 Dailies I had were easy to keep.

I often thank God I stopped drinking before this pandemic. I can’t imagine the condition I’d be in otherwise while working from home!

Wow @MASSRUNNER_FRANK, that's an amazing accomplishment on both counts (drinking and weigh-loss)! Congrats.

Alcohol is an area that I always want to remain careful about. It plays a central role in Judaism, but it can easily get out of control. It's a great example of one of those things that can be used in the "right" way or in the "wrong" way, and so, one must decide how one approaches it. It's a lot like Facebook or other social media...I've now been Facebook-free for nearly 2 years (and in many ways, it was like an addiction for me that also had a really negative effect on my world-view).

My own weight is often closely tied to my alcohol consumption. Generally speaking, when I cut back on my alcohol, I lose weight!

The easiest lbs I lost were when I quit drinking. Later, when I finally got around to WW a couple of glasses of wine 1-2 times per week was a regular thing. But even keeping within my points I found I did better when I skipped it even though the wine points were replaced with some other treat.

Somehow I lost interest in wine. I'm the only person I've ever known who intends to drink more but never seems to get around to it. It takes too much energy.

You can't say that anymore George! I'm the same. Lost interest in wine (at least in drinking my own glass), will have a small one occasionally (once every couple months) and a taste of DHs, but that's it.

And I'm often planning to drink something for weeks before I get to it! Bought a new gin a week and a half ago and have been meaning to try it. It smells great, and my son was over Wed, smelled it, said he'd like it, didn't have a drink (had plans with his wife so didn't stay long), and came over today telling me how good it is. He'd bought and tried it already! Same with bourbon, but my consumption may go up some when the weather cools.

As for the overall topic, I definitely think alcohol has an effect on weight loss! I get the calories in the drink and in what I eat because I've drank (and it doesn't take much to make me munchie). Having said that, I have no interest in stopping. I did drink more during the first couple months of covid, and I got that back under control, but I definitely enjoy a social drink! I'm just going to have to learn the balence.

I have never been a huge drinker, beer only at ball games (NOT during covid 19) Scotch or whiskey no more than once a year, although I do enjoy them the after effect is more than I like. Wine is normally 1 glass a week (friday or saturday night dinner), unless we are out with friends (once again NOT during covid 19) The problem I have with wine on social occasions is the more than 1 glass effect, once I am into the 2nd glass my will power tends to go away along with my sobriety and probably several million brain cells, so I try to avoid having it at all, sometimes with success and sometime not. Once that takes place the likely hood of me staying on plan pretty much goes out the window.

@imastar2 Congratulations to you as well! God is good.
I know that without Him, I couldn’t have ever stopped and it is also the wisdom of A.A. Principles that keeps me from thinking that this drinker can just have one. I realize that isn’t the case for most people, but it certainly is for me.
Unfortunately alcoholism also runs in my family on both sides. Thankfully, not either parent, or my twin sister.

It's hard to lose weight, and not very healthy, when at least half your points are alcohol. Trust me I know. Sobriety is a good thing. Congratulations Frank.
