We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.
This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!
Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.
Monday - 88olds (George)
Tuesday - whathapnd (Emmie)
Wednesday - misterhub (Greg)
Thursday - MASSRUNNER_FRANK
Friday - imastar2 (Derrick)
Today's Topic: Hope
What is hope? Do we need it for weight loss? Where does it come from? How do we get it if we don’t have it? If we have it, how does it work?

I don’t think my weight loss effort started with hope. I think it started with fear. I was going to either drop dead or have a stroke. We had 2 little kids at home. And it was really when I started seeing a stroke as a more likely outcome that I became fearful enough to act.
But act how? Do what? My initial plan was to go far into the north woods with enough food to survive the winter if rationed properly. Take that, an exercise bike, a DVD player, and a stack of books. Crazy? Goofy? Yes and yes. But I could see it working. In an instant I had hope. I could seem myself losing weight. My childish fantasy revealed a real issue- it wasn’t just a matter of losing weight, I had to live my life while I did it.
But the ability to see myself succeeding at weight loss changed nearly everything for me. I read the motivation board a lot. All the de-motivating issues that come up there- medical issues, some real, some exotic afflictions that can only be cured at a vitamin shop, failed past attempts, damaged metabolisms, need for immediate results, limits of the calorie calculations- all the evidence that the system just won’t work. Thsoe things are an attack on hope.
Anyone see the Micheal Jordan documentary The Last Dance? Near the end he says this about the 6 NBA championships and, I think his career in general, “It started with hope.”
When I stated WW of course I was exposed to the success stories. OK, I thought, the program works.
But just because it worked for these folks doesn’t mean its going to work for me. I had to see some results to get to hope with WW. Different than my initial effort. Don’t know why.1 -
Interesting question. In my mind, hope is the strategy, and faith is the tactic.
What I mean by this is that hope is the wish or dream that things will be better. Hope is a motivator, I guess.
Faith is the belief that if you follow a plan that it will work.
Perhaps hope got me to go to my first WW meeting, but faith made me keep coming back.1 -
Love this question, mostly because it's always been one of those words ... You know, when somebody says "I hope I can do better", WW coaches are likely to ask what they're going to do to make that happen. BUT, I recently got a new and, to me, awesome insight into this.
I have been surfing WW meetings since this virtual thing started and I very much did not like the leader who took over my group. I recently found my first WW leader from back in the 80s. I could never have told you his name, but the more I listened to him, the more familiar he seemed, and we compared notes and figured out our connection. I've been revisiting his meetings (since I reached goal with him). One of his sayings is to give meaning to HOPE ...
High
Opportunity to
Put forth
Effort
This makes HOPE a valid, useful tool for weight loss.3 -
If by hope we mean simply a good attitude I am ok with it. My last failed weight loss scheme is what I call my "wishing my weight off" plan using sorta good eating and activity.
I need more than simple hoping and wishing to make it work.
I like Lin's post.2 -
Great posts but @podkey is the one that resonates most with me.
Which is likely why I don’t bristle with tracking.
This does make me think about this Thursday LTL topic though...hmmm.0 -
Hope is where you want to go. Faith is the belief you'll get there. Neither is worth anything without action.0

Hope, Wish, Want, Dream, Desire. A person usually has or needs one of these before they take action but as @misterhub stated a dream, goal without Faith and action really is a wish. I believe Faith moving forward with belief in yourself and that you can accomplish what it is you want is also a huge key to success. That's my thoughts on the subject.😁
