Have you ever received a monetary bonus for being healthy?

Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle did! His contract includes a $300k bonus, to be paid in $75K increments, each time he makes a weigh-in. I love football! I love the game. I really do. Seriously though, a bonus for being healthy. He's a professional ATHLETE!!! Does anyone else see anything wrong with this picture???

  • No but if someone paid me that much to lose weight I'd probably be at my goal by now :P

If you look at people in pro sports who gain A LOT of weight off season and when they retire, it's linemen. It's not uncommon for linemen to show up overweight in camp and that affects how fast they move and their conditioning. If they aren't up to par, then it sets back the team, because football is one of the ultimate team sports.

surely it should be the other way round, show up having put weight on and your fined and maybe even benched for a while, but to be given a bonus if you say within their range, yes something wrong there, they get paid enough already!

^^^This. They are getting paid to be athletes, and all that it takes to perform as an athlete. Seems to make more sense to penalize them for not being able to perform as contracted. It's like giving someone a bonus for showing up to work on time.

Nope, i received quite the opposite - I was denied health insurance coverage by one of the large well known companies. I was self employed at the time and seeking to get insured on my own. I was/am generally healthy even with the extra weight but was concerned about "what if" scenarios. Another less well known company decided they'd insure me but at a hugely inflated rate so I remained uninsured for a long time.

Actually yeah. At the hospital that I work at you have to pass a physical fitness test before you are offered employment. They also have a voluntary program for employees. You receive a certain amount of points for things like not smoking, eating well, and exercise each day. At the end of each month you trade your points for cash and are entered for a drawing to win an even bigger chunk of cash each month. Along the way you receive free stuff like fitness equipment among other things.

An unhealthy player gets millions for doing nothing, so for the Owners, the math works.

Yep, our health insurance used to give monetary bonuses for participating in a detailed health program. It was cumbersome, but I earned money for participating! Why not! My company also has a welless program and I'm on the committee. We earn points for working out, etc, plus also for smoking cessation (almost at 1 year) and we earn money at specific amounts of points that add up continously. It's great!
