I am new to MFP but not new to trying to lose weight. I’ve struggled with obesity since my teens, yo yo-ing up & down. I’m not approaching my 40’s and am tired of living my life in pain. My knee has been giving me problems for over a year now, my feet and ankles ache all the time and the back pain is so bad sometimes I can hardly stand it. The excessive weight has got to go before my body gives out beneath me.
I set a modest goal for myself of just 3 or 4 lbs per week because in the past I have had high expectations for rapid weight loss and/ or compared my successes to the successes of others which often left me discouraged and led to me giving up entirely. But not this time! This time I will remind myself (over & over if necessary) that it is a process, it took many years to get here and may take many years to get to where I want to be. And I also want to focus on my success without comparing to anyone else. Every single pound is that much less stress on my joints, every single step is one step closer to feeling better. Slow & steady!
Good luck everybody!!

IMHO, 3 or 4 pounds a week is not modest. But it looks like you might be planning on 3 or 4 pounds per month, which is far more realistic. The general consensus is that people who lose weight at 1 or 2 pounds a week are more successful at keeping it off. Others say that you can lose 1% of body weight safely, so the heavier you are, the more pounds you may be able to lose safely (and permanently). In any case, you really have to make a lifestyle change that you can stick with even after you've lost the excess weight. That means a healthy diet and adequate exercise for the rest of your life.
I started last July at 330 pounds and was able to lost ~2 pounds/week into December. Then it slowed, due to holidays, and I plateaued in January into February. I'm now starting to see some loss again, and this morning I weighed 271. So, it's definitely possible, but you must have patience, perseverance, and faith. Do not give up. When you're tempted, just remind yourself of where you are and where you want to be, and act accordingly.

With my 58th birthday coming up next month, and dealing with major health issues, I decided it's about time I get serious with losing the excess weight.
Joined in November of 2020, but left shortly afterwards. Personal & health reasons. Thankfully, I didn't gain during the 3 months away. Didn't lose any weight either. I'm back with a better outlook and more determination than ever before.

Thanks for hosting this challenge. I can do okay making healthy food choices. I am very good at getting to the gym on a regular basis. I am not good at all portion control. I tend to blow my calorie intake between 3-7PM M-F. It has gotten much worse since my office switched to a fully remote workforce.2 -
