@mnwalkingqueen -- Holly, congrats on doing your walk! This is the first time in many years that I didn't do at last a 5k on Thanksgiving morning. Even last year when the turkey trots were all canceled, I still went out on my own. This year, I just didn't have time since I was laid up most of the day on Wednesday. Riley looks so cute on the treadmill!!

AFM- So my colonoscopy went well. The prep wasn't great, but I was prepared for it to be much worse. The actual procedure was a piece of cake since I was asleep. LOL! No issues or problems, and I'm now good for 10 more years. Yay!

I actually hit my lowest weight on monday of last week before I did the prep, but my weight was back up a pound or so later in the week due to Thanksgiving dinner plus all of the leftovers. The good news is that the goodies are now all gone, so I can get back on track with my eating.

Another plus is that I also finally rejoined the gym, We spent the weekend raking leaves, and then I had meetings, so tomorrow will be my first chance to go check out the new location. We live in a more congested area now, so I hope it's not too crowded. One nice thing is that the app has a "crowd meter," so you can check to see if it's really busy before you go.

Our Thanksgiving was really nice. My whole family was here for dinner, and a couple of friends stopped over to join us for dessert. I had a couple of really good nights of sleep over the weekend, so that was nice as well.

Hope everyone also had a good week!

    Happy Hump Day!
I know I’m going to be a Debbie downer at this point but if we never get the white stuff this year I will be happy. I have really enjoyed being able to walk outside all of November and mostly December according to the weather for the next week. I mean it was over 50° here today yes I still wear my winter jacket because I like to keep my body temperature is close to the same all the time. Well I was going to buy a treadmill on Black Friday the one I want is only sold online at Sam’s Club and it has been sold out now for several days there wasn’t even a deal on it. I may end up joining the gym I just don’t like driving in the winter time especially around my neighborhood because they rarely plowed decent I’ve gotten stuck so many times because I own a car and not an SUV an SUV comes in handy when plowing is crappy.
@ Karen- i’m glad that you had a good Thanksgiving and that your doctors appointment went well. Is it normal to be put to sleep for the procedure or were you actually just so tired you fell asleep? I am so nervous to get that procedure done. I hope that your new gym works out for you it’s really cool that they have a meter on the app to let you know when they’re too busy.

@mnwalkingqueen I understand about wanting to walk outside. It gets cold and icy here too. I just workout at home now. Even in the better weather, I don't want to risk the crime. So I follow some exercise videos on youtube which seem to help. I can't get a treadmill because we're in a stick-frame apartment. Maybe you'll find on locally like on craigslist (be safe!).
There's a walking club at the mall but I only went once. Maybe if you have a large indoor mall they have a walking club too (done before the official mall opening hours).

    Hey Everyone,
Well the weather is insane here in MN. The white crap is here now. It has been a feels like temperature of below zero for the last two days so not much working out going on. Haven’t found any exercise videos online that I like yet.
after 30 years I have figured out why I hate winter so much. Me and a coworker were chatting today about car accidents and both of us happen in horrific accidents in the winter time. We realize that we might have some sort trama from our situations that caused us to not want to drive in the winter or be outside at all in the winter. I know for myself I really don’t like driving in the winter and I definitely don’t like driving when it’s icy out. That is when my accident happened and I can now see after all this time how it affects how I deal with the winter.

@MrsHermit- I know the malls in my area open early for more walking. The downside is I hate driving in winter weather. I pretty much become a homebody in the winter time.

@mnwalkingqueen -- Holly, I was put under general anesthesia, and my understanding is that is normal for the procedure. Don't be nervous--the procedure itself was nothing. Prep was a little bit icky, but overall not horrendous. I tried to stick to a softer diet for a few days prior, and I think that helped. Sorry the treadmill you want is out of stock--that's a bummer. I hear you about not wanting to drive in the ice and snow, and I am 100% with you about being perfectly happy if we had zero snow. We had our coldest day since February today, and I am not a fan. Fortunately, our extended forecast says we will be back up in the 60s next week after a week of typical December weather. One of my friends said the almanac predicts we won't have any big storms until late winter. Fingers crossed that's accurate.

@MrsHermit -- Are you also in the Midwest of the US? Mall walking is a great idea! Most clubs walk right before the mall opens at 9 or 10 am, but anyone could just go walk the mall any time when it's open too. Sometimes, if I'm feeling sluggish at work, I do a lap around our entire high school where I work. It's only about a quarter of a mile, but it really helps--especially if it's a day when I'm not moving much in the classroom.

AFM--I've been to the gym twice in the past week, last Wednesday and again on Sunday, and it wasn't crowded either day. I would have gone again today, but I started putting up my Christmas decorations while listening to a Zoom meeting after work, and time got away from me. Also, my lower back has been tight the past few days. I think I just slept wrong on Saturday night because it felt this way when I woke up Sunday morning. I still went to the gym on Sunday as planned because I thought the exercise might help loosen it up. It may have helped a bit, but as of Tuesday it still feels really stiff after sitting for more than 10 or 15 minutes. It's fine when standing or moving, so I'm not really sure what the problem is. I've been doing some extra stretches, so hopefully it will continue to get better over the next few days. Gunner has laser therapy tomorrow after work, so I will try to hit the gym again Thursday. My goal is 3 days a week, but I'll be happy with 2 days considering all of the meetings and holiday parties I have coming up over the next couple of weeks.

My weight went up a little last week, but it's already back down to 190.4 this week. I would LOVE to ring in the New Year in the 180s, so that's motivating me a bit. :)

well Minnesota friends we got the nasty stuff all in one day. I live in the north metro so I didn’t get as much as some people but I think I got 6 inches in one day. My friend lives in the south metro and she got 18 inches in one day. I heard it could’ve affected some of Wisconsin and Iowa also I’m not sure though. Anyway if you live in any of these cold climate states and you hate snow just as much as I do I feel you. Shoveling was my exercise for today because they never plow our streets fast enough so today I will be stuck in my house for sure. although my blood pressure medication is not working as well as it should for me I was on a very low dose 5 mg so the doctor update yesterday to 10 mg but she said she was impressed with all the walking I’ve been doing and that I’ve gotten back down to my pre-Covid weight. I personally wish that I would have better self control over not eating all the crappy food that I do.

@ Karen- Thanks for the information on the procedure. I have heard from other people the prep is kind of annoying to say the least. I hope your back is feeling better. That is great motivation for the new year.

@mnwalkingqueen I am a homebody too. I can't park a car anyways so I avoid driving trips (my husband is a great driver thankfully.) Also, the crime is just getting terrible here so we avoid going out. There's a car repair shop in every neighborhood here, it seems, because of winter! No problem being a homebody, just find something fun to move around to. Remember to enjoy any sunshine through the windows you can get! (it gets dark here for a few months; cloudy skies).

@skinnyjeanzbound I'm currently in the Inland Northwest, but moving in a few months to high desert. (at least that's the plan and hope and prayer). Walking around as a break at work is a good idea. Although I'm working at home, I try to get up and move around.

    What I've learned so far:
    - exercise in the evening after eating has less impact than exercise in the morning before eating, regardless of same caloric intake
    - Keeping calories as close to goal as possible has more impact than exercise for me
    - Saving calories (not eating) until evening makes the evening feel more relaxed
    - Busy hands are a good idea, as are habit goals

I've been trying to work on daily habit goals but things are changing so much here with the necessary move that it's been tough. I'll still insist on my daily morning prayer goal before I face the day. That's a start anyways.

I did my December 10K today at the Mall of America for make a wish foundation
because it was the feels like temperature 2° outside here in Minneapolis. I had a goal to do the 6.2 miles in two hours based on my minute per mile on other walks. I am so proud to say that when I’m walking indoors and without a dog I can do so much better. I complete it early and walked my mile the fastest I’ve walked all year. I will say walking inside with a sweatshirt on I was pretty hot by mile 3. Here are some pictures I found a cool display at one of the stores to go with my 10k walk and based off of one of my favorite watches (Swatch) as a kid. I wish the lady taking my picture would’ve told me I was holding the bib upside down LOL

oh I also have a question for the group. Last week when I went to the doctor I was told not to eat anything before my appointment. I weighed myself at home before going to the doctor and when I was weighed at the doctor I weighed over a pound less than I did at home. Do you think that my scale is off or could it be that the doctors scale was off? There was an hour difference between weigh ins

@mnwalkingqueen Congrats on your mall walk! That's pretty cool and it looks like you had fun!
I'm not sure about the scale question, because I see fluctuations on my own scale even when I hadn't done or eaten anything only after a few hours. I've watched a few educational videos on how the body converts to and from fat, which is interesting (water and carbon dioxide plus sweating), but I think it's largely not really understood. I think since it was just a one pound difference I would just dismiss it. Maybe your body is trying to look its best self-consciously?

I haven't been exercising or cutting back on calories (though keeping it limited) as much this past week because of stress and just trying to prepare for something (move, nomadic, what?). Last two weeks have been date-shy as bad news/events tend to always happen in the past two weeks (or next week) and last year was hell during that time. Thankfully nothing serious has happened so far and I actually had a happy birthday. Not a single bad news that day. End of week, we finally found out we are in fact moving to a place, not going to be nomadic so that stress is relieved. We'll be pretty much broke when we get there, but we will have a place to camp on while we build shelter. Thank God.

@MrsHermit - I feel you with the date dilemma. I’m not even going to jinx myself because it’s so close to the holiday, but let’s just say they haven’t been so nice to me in the past. I am glad that you have a place that you’re going to move to for sure now that takes a lot of stress off of you probably.

as for me Minnesota is extremely cold right now and I am so sick and tired of the snow and the cold and it’s only just begun. My exercise has went down quite a bit are used to walk an hour a day sometimes two hours. The last three days I haven’t walked at all. I am not so sure with the virus numbers going up and so many people being sick if it’s a good idea to go back to the gym yet or not. My doctor says it’s not really a good idea in Minnesota anyway. I have went to the mall and walked once I might do that on Saturdays and Sundays but there’s no way I can do it Monday through Friday. The one good thing is I love Christmas but this year I have not been in the mood to bake at all. Mostly because I give my baked goods as gifts and most of my friends say that they’re tired of all the sweet stuff at Christmas time. So I’ve had no sweets at all. I however did buy a cookie tray from the bakery that’s in my neighborhood but I didn’t buy very much and it’s mostly gingerbread man. Something that I don’t really know how to make that well and I’m not that good at. The plus side was that you could make any size a cookie tray that you wanted so my cookie tray doesn’t have very many cookies at all just enough for Christmas Day.
I hope everyone has a wonderful and blessed Christmas!

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate!

Sorry I haven't been on here lately. The end of the semester was crazy this year with our work schedule going all the way up to yesterday, the 23rd. On top of that, my husband had an accident at work and injured his hand in a bump press. He spent 7 hours at the ER on Wednesday because the poor healthcare workers are stretched so thin--overworked and understaffed. I spent Wednesday evening running around to get his prescriptions filled and extra gauze and such, so we can change his bandages. I only had to work a half day yesterday, and I got to work from home, but I also had to take Gunner for a checkup and laser therapy. Then we had to go to a hand specialist for my husband. He's got 3 broken fingers, lots of stitches, and an automatic drill went clean through the bone on one of his fingers. The good news is that the doctor said he should heal completely with full function, but it's going to take time, and because fingertips have so many nerve endings, it will be an uncomfortable few days, even weeks, to come.

My weight has stayed down near 190 which has made me happy, and I've been pretty good about getting to the gym regularly. However, I haven't been logging my food religiously the past couple of days, and I don't plan to even try tomorrow. Sunday I will get back to it with, hopefully, no damage done. I also plan to get to the gym 4 or 5 days a week over the next couple of weeks until I return to work.

    December Goal: 242 lbs

I gained this past week, went over on calories a few days. I need to find places to put up reminders of my husband's advice: put away half of whatever you prepare. I've noticed that at the end of the day I keep thinking, "If I had only had one of those, or taken a third less of that...". Although I'd like to do alternate day fasting as I know that would likely help, I haven't figured out how I could do that while not negatively impacting my kitchen duties.

@mnwalkingqueen Thank you, yes I am relieved that we have a place to go. I've even caught my husband smiling a couple of times, so although there are many sighs and downsizing plans, we're both looking forward to it.
I hope your Christmas is peaceful.
We're supposed to get down to negative Fahrenheit next week (Inland Northwest). I workout at home already, using some free youtube videos. The ones I follow don't take up a lot of space.

@skinnyjeanzbound Oh my gosh I'm so sorry about what happened to your husband! God willing he will get full function of all his fingers/motion again.

    Merry Christmas all!

Give the gift of health to yourself and your loved ones in the coming year!

Holiday is over and I didn’t eat much cookies or sweets, but I ate to much of the real food. It has been cold here last couple of days and I still got 30-40 minutes of out side walking in. However, starting Tuesday we will be in the negative temps every morning for atleast a week.
@karen- I will keep your husband in my prayers. Sounds crazy and stressful time right before Christmas!
@MrsHermit - Don’t be to hard on yourself and you will find something that works for you.

Happy (early) New Year to you all. I was on MFP a few years ago and this thread was one I posted to and read almost daily. I have lost weight on my own but not as much as I wanted to. So, you know how it is near a year’s end; a lot of us start making plans and working up lists of what we wish to accomplish next year (me too)!

I decided this afternoon, on a Spurs moment to pick up this app once again. At least for the first 3 months. Looking forward to getting reacquainted with the posters here

@mnwalkingqueen Thank you. I'm still working on finding what works for me.

    Happy New Year everyone!!

@MrsHermit -- Good luck with your move--I hope everything goes smoothly. We moved shortly after the pandemic shutdown (July 2020), and it was hectic, but we are so much happier in our new place. It's very stressful, but I took it as an opportunity to purge some of the old things that were just cluttering up our life. My weight also bumped up a little bit over the past couple of weeks, but I'm still happy with my overall progress--you should be happy with yours as well!

@holly -- We are in the midst of our first big snowstorm as I write this. It started around noon today and will continue into the wee hours. We are supposed to get a total of 5-9 inches, and then temperatures are supposed to drop significantly. I'm not a fan, but I guess I'm glad it's happening while I'm still on break, so at least I don't have to try to get to school in this mess. I'm a bit worried about how Gunner will fare on the snow and ice--he's so unstable even when the ground is clear. He's refused to go outside since the snow began falling.

AFM-- Thanks for the well wishes about my husband's hand. We saw a hand specialist twice, and both the doctor and the PA said they believe he will heal completely and have full use of all of his fingers. It's just going to take a bit of time. He got his stitches out Thursday, and it already looks a lot better. Should be a total of 6-8 weeks to heal completely.

My weight is up a bit, but I know that's due to a lot of holiday foods high in sodium. Like Holly, I haven't gone crazy with the sweets, so that's a plus. My downfall is Bailey's Irish Cream. I love to sip it over ice. I only allow myself one bottle for the holidays, and this year I bought the light version which is lower in sugar/calories, but it's still quite a splurge. The good news is that bottle will be gone tonight. I've been doing well at getting to the gym--made it 3 times last week and added some strength training to the cardio I had been doing.

I have one more week off, and then we start back on the 10th, so I'm getting a bunch of appointments out of the way. Got my rear tires replaced already because one was damaged. Monday, I have to go to the dealer for an issue with my ignition button, so I plan to get a bunch of prep for 2nd semester done while waiting. I also have an appointment to donate blood, Gunner's therapy, and an appointment with a lipid specialist. I'm hoping he has some non-statin solutions to my high cholesterol. I had genetic testing done last year, and I definitely have a genetic predisposition, so there's only so much diet and exercise can do. I tried statins years ago, but they really didn't bring down my numbers much. Plus, I gained a lot of weight around my midriff while on them. It could have been a coincidence, but I don't want to risk that again. I've worked so hard to lose that weight.

I'm not big on new years resolutions, but I plan to continue to log all of my calories and get to the gym 2-3 times/week. My goal is to lose 10 pounds by the time I leave for Spain in June. I know that doesn't sound like much, but if I achieve it, I will be at my lowest adult weight.

@MrsHermit and @skinnyjeanzbound ... thank you for the welcome (back!) ...
. I first logged on MFP in 2012 and stopped logging (I believe) in 2018. At the time I first joined, I was determined to lose 100 pounds by the time I turned 70 in 2015 ... Well! ... that didn't work out the way I had thought it would.
. Now, all this time later I am still working on losing the second half of that weight. It's been an up and down journey that can get very disheartening. It's amazing how I can lose, say, 17pounds in 5 months and gain it all back in 2 .. This past year being a case in point. I had gotten to a new low by May, maintained it all through the summer and then blew it the last 2 months of the old year. Still, even though I ended the year with a small loss, at least it was a loss and not a gain.

    About me:
    Age: 77
    5'3" tall
    Highest weight: 278 lb
    Goal weight: 175 lb
    Current weight: 233.0

    2022 goals
    1. Get outdoor fresh air everyday ... walk when I can (I use a wheeled walker, the kind with a seat)
    2. Cook all my meals
    3. Shop frequently: buy produce and protein I need for the current recipe I'm cooking.
    4. Keep the kitchen and house clean enough for company to be comfortable coming over.
    5. Never Quit focusing on healthy ways to slim down.
