I took 10 days off from working out. Though double vaccinated, Covid is no joke. Was feeling pretty awful for around five days. Never a fever, though.

Back at it today at lunch. Been feeling better so I did 8000 meters (8013). Will try to get 100K in at a minimum. With missing 10 days of the challenge, won't get to 200K but I can make a go at 100K for sure. Super slow paced.

Most importantly, my HR stayed down and my chest congestion actually seems better. It was just a tad now (coughed my fool head off over Friday and Saturday). Breathing was fine during the row.

Back at it after a day off: 8,218m on the rowing machine, 82,116 meters cumulative. On schedule.

Glad you're doing better, @MikePfirrman: I'd wondered how things were going with your Covid breakthrough, glad to hear it hasn't been unduly severe.

    Glad you're feeling better.

I'm triple vax'd for C19 (2 shots of Moderna and a Moderna booster) and also got the high dose flu shot for seniors for the year.

Not at much risk of catching C19 (for a variety of reasons that I won't go into here) but I've still been getting myself PCR lab tested monthly since June 2020 because it's free/easy and reassuring.

Even got a blood test for C19 antibodies done back in Apr 2020 because I was in China in Oct 2019 and wanted to make sure I didn't catch it there, even though I was never sick.

The tests have always been negative and I want to keep it that way.

As for rowing, "slow and steady" is my motto. I'm way past going for the lowest times and fastest speeds. I use to row 10km per day for 70km per week but was getting burned out doing that.

I currently row at a rate of 50km per week, which I usually do at a rate of 10km per day for 5 days per week with 2 days off each week. So, there's no point of posting my daily results.

I'm up to 70km for the challenge so far, will be up to 110km by the end of the week and will hit 210km by the end of the challenge on 12/24.

To date, I have rowed 1,560,000 meters for the C2 log year (which began on May 1, 2021 and ends on April 30, 2022) and 8,810,000 meters lifetime (since Sep 2016 when I started rowing).

I should finish the C2 log year by rowing a total of 2,600,000 meters (9,850,000 meterslifetime) and I look forward to reaching the "milestone" of 10 MILLION meters rowed by the end of July 2022.

10K today, so 18,013 not cumulative.

That's great Sgt. I hit 10M early in the year this year but I've been at it a while longer. Probably more like 15M because I rowed in the gym for four or five years before I even started tracking it.

@SomeMFPuser -- I think you might hit 3 million this season at the rate you're going!

    Total 41,483

I added what I'd have to average to get to 200K and it might be still doable. I think it was like 9650 a day or so (I row six days a week), so the days I row, that's what I'm shooting for now.

My math is terrible Readded it. I have to average around 12.3K per day. If I do a bit extra on Sundays, which I normally do anyway, possible. We'll see.

Dec. 9: 16,507 meters BikeErg, counts as 8,254 challenge meters. 106,819 meters cumulative.

Past my halfway point, and on schedule. Well, a little ahead, but with a 6 days on/1 day off schedule planned, I get a little ahead during the week, drop back on my rest day.

I usually do a few more meters than minimum most days, so there's a little bit of creep-ahead, even with the rest days. 🤷‍♀️

Question for all you rowers. My son bought a water rower and has it in his garage gym on the concrete floor. He's having trouble with it moving on him as he rows (he's 6'3", about 225 lbs. so generating some force). He been trying to put some weight plates on/around it to keep it from moving but is looking for a mat he could use. He'd need one about 8'x3'.

Any suggestions on mats or other solutions? Thanks much.

I bought a mat for mine that I no longer use because I row on my deck. I have those jigsaw piece mats and have like 3 pieces left over from doing my garage gym. I use two pieces under the front of my rower and one in the back. Not sure if a WaterRower would need four pieces or not.

It's very common, even with Concept2s to "float" across floors, especially with a big guy. Sprinters often have to have people hold down the rowers for them when they are attempting to do PBs (personal bests).

Waterrower sells a $50 mat on their site, but the puzzle piece ones are thicker and might keep him from moving as much and you can put them together in any shape you need.

Some people use stall mats that are intended for barn stalls, for horse or other domestic barn stock. As you can imagine, they're quite tough, but may be more expensive than the gym-type options.

I can't quite prevent myself saying this, though: Partly, this is a technique problem. Think about it: If the machine moves across the floor, the person is spending effort/generating power that isn't going into the flywheel or water tank. That's a speed sacrifice. It's not inevitable just because someone is big/strong.

Yes, it's more likely to happen with bigger guys, partly just from that mass moving around. It's also more likely to happen with bigger guys because they're used to relying on raw strength to achieve things, rather than tweaky-twiddling with annoyingly detailed aspects of technique. This is a common concept across a variety of sports. I'm sure it's partly myth, but from watching a big ol' boatload of rowers over the years (pun intended), I think there's an element of truth in it, statistically speaking.

It wouldn't be easy in a garage, but the college erg room where I used to work out had blocks on the floor (nailed or screwed to a wood gym-type floor), to get around this happening until the women refined their skills enough to get the power into the flywheel (they had C2s). (These are big women, can be 6' and over themselves.)
