Mark P

I am not good at taking care of myself. I know what i should be doing but never really seem to be able to get it done. Work and emotional drama in my life always seems to sabatage my efforts to lose weight, get fit and generally live a healthier lifestyle. Im not young anymore and my body is slowing down. I am hoping that using MFP will help me to re-introduce me to living healthy. Pre-diabetic. over weight.

Welcome! Start by reading some of the “stickied” posts (the ones people say are “must reads.”) See what threads appeal to you. Maybe find a group you like. Try to find your “why,” the reason you can return to for why you are doing this.

I struggle with this too - what I “should” do versus what I actually do, which is usually nothing - and I’m certain there’s at least an element of feeling unworthy somewhere in there; in other words, do we think we’re worth taking care of?

Beyond that, I agree with the above poster. There’s a lot of great advice and info here from people who have been exactly where you are. Just the fact that you’re here is a big step.

I’ll just add that I’ve been tracking weighing food and tracking calories and exercise for around 80 days now and am down about 9-10 pounds. Doesn’t sound like much, but it’s showing me I can change something when I take steps to change it. This actually works!

    Good luck, and welcome.

Everyone who's dealing with weight issues and health issues KNOW what they should probably do. It's whether or not it's truly a priority in your life or not. Sure there are always lots of more enjoyable things to do than eat moderately right and do physical fitness, but in the long run I always find out that it turns out that the ones that DO take care of themselves, live a MORE enjoyable life because they can do things physically and don't worry about the health risks that the majority of people who don't take care of themselves worry about till they die.
You just have to MAKE THE CHOICE to WANT to take the time to do what's necessary. Till that time, this will all just be an afterthought.
