More Calories Allowed On Workout Days?

Hi!
I am new to myfitnespal.com and love it. I am confused though. I notice when I enter my exercise, my calorie allowance goes up. Why is that? I thought we had to create a calorie deficit to lose weight. Adding the number of calories burned back in to the diet seems counterintuitive?

MFP already gives you a deficit to lose weight based on the goals you set (500 less than maintenance for 1lb loss a week, 1000 less for 2lb a week etc) When you exercise you are creating an even larger deficit, this is not necessarily a good thing as you need to eat enough to be healthy and fuel your body through your workouts.
This does seem counterproductive, but it's exactly the same as eating to maintain, and then exercising to burn extra calories (not eating them back) or getting your deficit half from food and half from workouts.
MFP just does it this way because it's easiest to keep track of. Plus not everyone can, or wants to workout everyday but yet still want to have a daily deficit

Your calorie goal on MFP is a "net" calorie goal. The deficit is already built in. If you do activity above and beyond your normal day to day stuff, you will have to fuel that with more food. Hope this helps. :00

Yup. Eat the exercise calories.
Search the forums. Lots of good info comes up.
MFP factors in your deficit for weight loss, meaning you eat any calories you burn in order to properly fuel your body. It's a great approach.

I believe that the calorie count calculated for you by MFP is already a deficit, so you CAN add back the calories from exercise and still see results; however, you do not HAVE to. Good luck to you!0

If you want to lose weight don't eat back your calories ...especially with junk food!1 Mistake! I see a lot of people on here do that. It will tell you how much you weigh in 5 weeks if you eat X number of calories..the less you eat the less you weigh. the more you exercise and the less you eat the less you will weigh.
Look at it this way..skinny people eat less than bigger people.0 -
